I had the H1N1 shot last Mon. I am not immune yet.
My friends DD25 was just diagnosed today w/the flu. She must have no human contact for 7 days. She is at home with her Mum (my friend) and Dad. My friend and I are going out to dinner tonite...a group of 6 people.

I am hesitant. I know my friend doesn't have it..but jeeeeeeeez she sure is in close contact! Am I being a total wimp?????

When my kids had it we were NOT told they can't have human contact with anyone for 7 days. The doctors (3 different ones) told me to keep them home for 24 hours after their last fever. I made sure it was 48 hours just in case.

For some bizarre reason my husband and I didn't get it. My youngest is 9 and my oldest is 20. I've heard that it is mostly under 25 year olds that it's hitting the hardest. That said, last June my friend had it (was actually tested) and she had it quite badly for 2 weeks. She's 47.

The truth is this flu is everywhere. I was talking to a woman who's daughter is on my the same swim team as my daughter. They go to separate schools but they are in the same neighborhood. She was absolutely SHOCKED that my kids had had the H1N1. I told her it was all over the schools. Many cases are mild enough that the parents are unaware the kids have it.

I can assure you that there are many people walking around in public carrying this virus so personally I wouldn't be too concerned if your friend isn't showing any signs of the flu. Think about all of the parents who are still going to work and their kids have it. The doctors and Health Canada are saying only the person with the H1N1 virus needs to stay home.

That said I would call your friend the day of the dinner and ask her if she is showing any signs. If so, one of you should stay home!

Her daughter was at her Dr's this am..just diagnosed today.
Her Dr told her no contact..7 days.

Dinner with my friend is tonite!:scared1:

My friend has been a little 'off' for a few days but has not been in contact with her DD up until yesterday...so whatever she had?? Who knows...she seems to be feeling okay because she is out there now for lunch with other pals!:confused3

Seven days is what we were told by the doctor also. Apparently you are contagious the first 72 hours once you show symptoms. With that being said my third child just finished with it. All three kids had it but dh and I have not. You cannot stop going out. The virus is everywhere just take the normal precautions.

I don't think I would have dinner with her. My son was diagnosed last night (he got the shot on Monday). DH took the day off work and other than going out this morning to get supplies (food and movies) we plan to hunker down for at least the weekend or till everyone is well. We will unfortunately be missing the Sound of Music on Sunday but don't think it is fair to go out. People are contageous, supposedly, 24hrs before symptoms appear. And even if your friend doesn't get it the virus can cling to her clothes.

To be on the safe side I would canx the dinner plans.

I kind of feel this way as well but I feel really badly. I am sure she will think I am nuts!

I told her when I was talking to her awhile ago that she had to stay home but she thinks I am kidding!:rolleyes1

I was talking to another friend who is a nurse (and more neurotic than me!) and she said she wouldn't dine with her and is faxing me 'something' to read? Not sure what?:confused3

Well, maybe someone here can maybe come up with an excuse for Minnie to tell her friend. I'm trying to help but my mind is blank.

If not, then just tell her "Sorry, you'll think I'm nuts, but I just can't take the chance of getting sick right now". If you are going away soon, mention that.

I am going away-two weeks today. Yes, good idea. I REALLY don't want to take a chance:confused3

My kids had it last week and we were also told a week. reason being symptoms will begin to dissappear after a couple days (fever, etc), but on day 4 or 5 it is common for fever to return and you feel really crappy again. To be safe it's best to stay home. Sure enough my kids fevers did return, one on Day 4 and the other was on day 5. For my Dh and I we could go out, but we took precautions and washed our hands a ton! They are so dry now! LOL!!!
Kids came through it fine, youngest even has asthma. It was more like a really bad cold. THere is 4 adults living in our home ages 37 and up and none of us got it.
Don't worry, go out with your friend and enjoy! It is every where, but if you are careful with washing your hands and keeping them away from your face, you will be fine!

Me being me, I couldn't pass up on food  having said that, you do realize that between work, and any other outings you have taken today, you probably passed at least half a dozen people with the flu right? and to top it off likely all H1N1 cases :teacher:

Unless you know she has it, don't be silly and go out with the girlfriends.

Well, she bailed and that suits me fine!! We go out Friday nites, husbands too. Usually 6 to 8 of us. She is the front line caregiver..her husband JUST went to get his shot (????) like that makes sense? She said she didn't want to be accused of "spreading disease" so she wasn't coming. Neither is her husband. She is my dearest friend..she'll be fine and we'll do it another time!
I may well walk by 100 people with the flu or about to have the flu...but I am not sitting right next to them for 2-3 hours at a dinner table with them laughing and chatting away 4-5 inches away!

This makes me feel better..and I am sure her daughter is happy to have her home!

I'm glad to hear you found an out.
I was out with a friend today, and her friends hubby has it. Symptoms came on quite suddenly, and severe.

Okay. So emergency room "diagnosed," does not mean you "have h1n1" I was diagnosed as having potential h1n1 October 26th, tested and given tamiflu. When I asked if I should be in total isolation (especially since DH has a serious autoimmune disease) I was told no, to take reasonable flu precautions, ie: hand washing, no hugs, kisses etc. I was confirmed on Nov 2as having h1n1, at which point I was no harm to anyone.

My friends daughter was confirmed as having it and she was told no human contact (other than her parents of course as she is staying with them) for 7 days. We were not at ease being out socially with her Mum (my friend) as it had been her daughter's 1st day down with it and a rough one at that! My friend had driven to Guelph to get her and back home with her daughter coughing severely all the way home in a small car. Chances were good that she would have that virus somewhere on her!

Anyways, non issue now..that was Friday and this is Sunday and it all worked out fine. I realize at any time on any day I might be in close quarters with someone that has it...I can't do anything about what I don't know.. But I can choose not to take that chance when I know there's a pretty good risk of infection!

I would definately cancel and just reschedule.

No big deal and this was better safe than sorry. You could then infect your entire family for what, dinner?
