I am looking into accomodations for my family (5 of us) for Summer 2004 in Bar Harbor, Maine. I finally found what looks to be a really nice place... Emery Cottages. NOT a bed and breakfast (which seems to be all I could find... lol)... right on the beach, kitchenettes INSIDE the cottages... it is EXACTLY what I wanted!!

I emailed for some information and they only let 4 people into the TWO bedroom cottage. This is a TWO bedroom cottage with full bath and full kitchen and they CANNOT accomodate my 3 little children!!!!

OYE! First, my family can't fit into an "normal" hotel room... then there is NO WAY I am taking my 3 young children to a bed and breakfast (read antiques and fine linens  )... so I finally find COTTAGES!! AND THEY WON"T TAKE ME!

This is family size discrimination! lol...

Should I just leave DH at home??? :p

Any ideas? Anyone from Bar Harbor?

Thanks,
Karen

Well, you could always take the sneaky route and tell them that there's only four of you that are going to be there. Just keep one of your kids or your husband out of sight while you check in.

OH NO!!! Don't turn this into a debate! I offered to pay for the extra person, so we will see what he says...

Karen

Yeah, you should be able to just pay for the fifth person. You can do that in hotels and you can get cots or or whatever for the extra person to sleep on. I mean, most regular hotel rooms can hold five people (with one sleeping on a cot) so I don't see how a two bedroom suite wouldn't allow a fifth person.

Yikes! That certainly isn't fair!! I hope that things work out for your family! Usually places say that "kids stay free". I haven't been up that way so I can't suggest any lodging, sorry. But for future reference, the town is called Bah Hahbah :)

I can definitely sympathize. We also have 3 children and it seems like the world is set up for families of 4. The worst offender is DCL. You have to pay for a family suite which is a lot more money than a regular room. That's why we took our business to Carnival. They actually have rooms for 5 :D

It's not Bar Harbor, but it is on the coast - just to the left. We are staying here:

They have a B & B and many cottages to choose from. Ask for Chris - she's real sweet.

Wow, Jipsy, Oakland House looks beautiful! Almost too beautiful... You know, I've read so many posts here and other places about kids ruining other people's vacations... that I am worried about my kids all the time (sometimes to the point of not letting them BE kids!). At least in Disney, they can let loose a little (not at V&A's of course) and be kids (can't we all? :p ). But at a beautiful Bed and Breakfast I would be anxious of their behavior.

I think we have decided on a driving tour of the entire New England area instead of a week in one place. We will take 10 days starting in Marblehead?, MA and heading up the coast to Bar Harbor, then inland (to find MOOSES! :p ) then down the New Hampshire Mtns, then home. I think I will start another thread sometime about WHAT NOT TO MISS IN NEW ENGLAND from my New England buddies here.

And if anyone wants some information on Lovely BUFFALO NY, let me know... I'll send you to Canada! lol

Thanks!

Karen

Karen - Here's the great thing about Oakland House cottages.

From the middle of June through September, the price includes a full breakfast and a huge dinner every single night, along with housekeeping every day in your cottage. And the prices are really not expensive at all. I have the price list here for 2003 if you would like me to PM it to you I could.

All I know about Buffalo is that when I was there, they had alot of snow LOL.

I live in Mass, so if you need help let me know. Kids don't bother me :)

jipsy,

That would be great if you could PM me over the price list... I love Maine, even though I have never been there. ;)

Since you are from MA, what should I put on my TO DO list for the North Shore (north of Boston). We have visited the Cape many times, in fact, I love Provincetown and whale watching!

Thanks so much!

Karen
