I am in the united states in florida. I am 10 years old and just graduated the 5th grade. Also my mom put me in a college class for web page designing, anyone at any age can go into a college called MCC. And no Im not there for 4 or 8 years. MCC is different. GO to the site.

Okay, with that in mind, I'd definitely say no to MySpace. First, it can be dangerous to people of any age, and second, you aren't allowed to have an account unless you're 14 (which I also think is too young, but that's another topic). If you really need a blog, go the LiveJournal route and make all of your entries private and/or friends only; ditto to the comments. That way, there's also no chance of you clicking on someone's else's site and it being inappropriate or questionable. Still don't put your name or city down or specifics. Saying "I'm going to the mall later" is one thing; saying "I'm going to X mall at X time" is a bad idea.

Above all, be safe! I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say none of us here want anything bad to hapen to you, and our advice is given with that in mind. :wizard:

If for just a blog, try Xanga. It is much more versatile than Livejournal, and much more controlled. Anything should be okay, as long as you don't put out personal info. And only view your friends pages, so you know your eyes will be safe too! :goodvibes

As an adult, I LOVE myspace. I have reconnected with a lot of friends that I had in high school. I can see how it can be dangerous for younger users though. I do not accept anyone as my "friend" unless it is someone I actually know in real life. So kids, be careful! Myspace can be a lot of fun but there is always someone out there looking for an easy target. :thumbsup2

wait i thought you were taking programming...

If I went on Myspace the only friends I would have would be people from my school or friends. Also maybe some movies or bands too.I would put only pictures of your pets or famous people or cartoons or a logo or something. They also have groups and I know there are some VMK fan groups on there.Watch out for other people's pages too, they might be dirty.

If I were your parent cpt, you wouldn't even be surfing the Internet by yourself, let alone creating a profile on myspace. Children older than you are being told to stay away...in my opinion, that is no place for someone your age.

Just my .02 cents ;).

Personally I think your mom has every right to be concerned and my feelings are you should not be posting anything that is for public view on the NET like pics or personal info ie. Tommy and I are going to see "Cars" on Friday night at the Bijou on Main.

TOO much info.

Even here on the DIS things that are not safe or appropriate can be exchanged either on the board or through PMs, IM or exchanging email addies. While we try to do as much as we can per board guidelines things do slip by and under the fence so to speak. We are working on that.

What does MCC stand for? Googling it turns up a load of stuff. ;)

Just a note...
I believe Capt is doing HERE exactly what you all are saying not to do on myspace, which IS more likely to be a danger zone than disboards, but nonetheless internet safety guidelines should be followed especially at such an age. Maybe we're better off not knowing where in FL this recent 5th grader attends general audience college tech classes for page designing. JMO

Myspace is in part why I got my 8th grade 12 yr old started on vmk. It is more age appropriate and I know some of his friends are starting to use myspace so this will more than satisfy that portion of computer life. At least for this year I think since we're taking the trip. Next year might be harder as more of his friends get on myspace. That's why I don't allow computers in bedrooms. Easier to monitor.

I allow a computer in my Monkey's bedroom...it just isn't hooked up to the Internet ;). She can only go online in the family area, where we can monitor what she is doing at any time :). Ah, parenting...it's an exhausting job . :goodvibes

I have a computer in my room, connected to the internet. I'm a 16 year old male and therefore not in the highest risk group, but I don't use any of those social networking sites anyway. I don't see the point to them.. you can talk to your friends through an IM, and if you want to blog you can use a more secure site.
