Now what? LOL

Cant do aerobics at this point, my knees are way too bad for that. I can do weight training and bike ( not eliptical though). And I will do some deep water jogging which is really the best thing all around for me.

I know I need to do both to get the best results, but how long of each? Is there a good balance to begin with?

Im really excited to get back into this.

Give me your best tips please!

Hi binny,
I don't know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to bump up your thread and wish you the best of luck! You are doing great by going back to the gym!

Is there a trainer there who can help you out with your questions? I know when I first joined my gym we were supposed to get 3 free sessions with one of their trainers (I never used mine though). If there is no one there at the gym you can ask, I would say, just do what you can that does not cause you pain. I have bad knees too and there are certain things I can't do yet. But I can walk on the treadmill and do the elliptical and the bike. The water exercises are a great idea too. My plan is that once I strengthen up my legs and my knees, I will try to ease into those things I can't do just yet. And definitely ask your doctor what they would recommend.

When I first signed up with the Y they made us go through a Nutrition program, then a body fat test/flexability text. And after those two, they had a trainer walk me through a program that he designed specifically for me. Does your new gym do something like that?

By the way, how is it going?

if there is free one-on-one trainer sessions included most definately take advantage of that! i'm not an expert by any means, but i can give you my .02

first off -- are you 'restarting' a workout routine. i'll assume so based on what you said ---- start slow and increase according to how you feel. 10 mins on a bike is better than 0, right?!? i have done many different schools of thought on cardio vs strength training vs yoga/pilates and what i find works for me is a balance of the three based on my goals (weight loss vs maintainence/tone) and what keeps my attention. if i don't like my workout routine for the week then I don't want to go!

i think it's trial and error -- why not make a routine for this week and then at the end of the week re-evaluate. cardio burns calories, weight training builds muscle to burn calories at rest, yoga/pilates will improve your flexibility and create a long-lean look. i don't think you can go wrong no matter what you do, the important thing is to DO IT! (HUGS)

HI gang, sorry I didnt back to you sooner :)

Actually its been going really well.

I started back at the Y where I was 2 years ago. I joined a 12 week fitness/nutrition class. I get a personal trainer for 12 weeks as well as nutrtion classes and exercise instruction.

I use to be an avid exerciser. I went to the Y 5 times a week. 2 years ago I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and around the same time money was really tight so I used those as excuses to not go anymore.
When in all honesty, my Fibro is manageable most days ( Im very fortunate I know) and then when they cut the price of membership more than half this year I made up my mind to get back into it.

Anyway, thats my story :)

Im on a M-W-F cardio T-TH strength training regimin I started slowly last week, I could only manage a warm up/ cool down with 14 minutes on the bike. Yesterday I did warm up/ cool down of 20 min each with 20 on the bike!! It was tough but I stuck it out and Im so proud of myself!!!

anyway, Im down 3 pounds since the 5th and Im very excited! It feel so good to be back into it again!

Thanks for the support!
