There is a mumps outbreak around here. I remember hearing years ago that if you had mumps, when you ate your TMJ area would tingle BADLY. I've been eating yogurt and drinking tea and boy is my TMJ tingling painfully. What are other symptoms and if I'm fairly certain I had an MMR like everyone else should I be concerned?

Back in the '83 I actually came down with the first case of measles in my area in YEARS and the first one any of the docs in our family practice had ever seen in person so I'm a bit worried the MMR wasn't too effective :scared:

No idea, but it could just be your TMJ acting up. I know that mine does that at times, and for no real reason at that. If you are not feeling well, other thatn the TMJ flare-up, call your doctor and ask them what the y suggest you do. Hope it gets better real fast!

I had the mumps when I was in kindergarten and what I remember is having a hugely swollen neck/under the chin area and a LOT of pain. It was too long ago to remember things like tingling joints though, sorry. Do you have any swollen lymph nodes around your neck/jaw?

I found this on WebMD:

What is mumps?
Mumps is a contagious viral infection that can cause painful swelling of the parotid glands, which are the salivary glands located between the ear and the jaw.

What causes mumps?
Mumps is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes, as well as through contact with recently contaminated items such as tissues, drinking glasses, and dirty hands.

What are the symptoms?
Mumps can affect many body systems and cause flu-like symptoms, abdominal pain, swollen cheeks, and swollen and painful testicles. However, up to 20% of people who are infected with the mumps virus do not have any symptoms.1

The incubation period—the time from when a person is first infected with the virus until the first symptoms develop—is usually 16 to 18 days, although it can be as long as 25 days. Usually, infected people are contagious a day or two before the first symptoms appear, although they can spread the virus any time from 7 days before to 9 days after symptoms appear.

Hmmm I can't really tell if my lymph nodes are swollen :confused3 They feel a tad puffy but I don't really know how they normally feel. It's not something I go around checking frequently on myself :rotfl: I have had a real low fever and sniffles for a couple of days and just wrote it off to allergies that I always get this time of year. It's the painful tingling TMJ that got me thinking this morning. I'm probably being a paranoid hypochondriac I know. I promise not to breathe on any of you until this passes.

About 5% of the people vaccinated get no protection due to their immune system. Could also be the MMR weakens in some. It sure has been on the rise in specific areas! I hope this isnt the case for you. Feel better :grouphug:

Are you better?

I have read the outbreak may be due to many people not getting the second dose of the MMR. 5% will get it anyway. I see you are a cancer survivor :) . Did treatment affect your immunizations?

Hope you are better!
