Oil Spill, where would you plan a beach vacation?

We love the gorgeous beaches on the Panhandle!
I had considered planning our next vacation to the Destin area - until this happened...

This is just a heartbreaking and massive tragedy! :sad1:

So, where can one plan to go for a beach vacation for next Spring, on the most gorgeous beach, now that the Gulf is being hit with this awful thing???

Any ideas?

We have considered the Playa Del Carmen/Riviera Maya area.

I'd wait and see what happens, since you aren't planning to travel until next spring. Currents and hurricanes could push that oil around a bit between now and then, so what looks like it is safe right now might not be if it is anywhere in that region.

I agree with previous poster. Wait and see what happens. We have a trip planned to Dauphin Island, Alabama for July 17 for a week. We are not canceling yet but watching everything very closely. We told the realtor as long as we can get in the water and play on the beach we are coming.

I live in Jersey (the "shore") and Spring Lake is beautiful! But in the spring, still COLD! The weather has been gorgeous here (well for me, I like heat and sun) and I have taken DD to the beach a few times in the past 2 weeks, but the water is just too cold even now, to even put our feet in it.

I agree. I think once it is capped, the clean up will go full force. Will it be perfect? No, but it wouldn't stop me from enjoying it. I am sure they have a swimming pool and could certainly use the revenue.

Delaware beaches and OC, New Jersey are awesome, but I'm thinking they'd be pretty darn cold in the spring. In fact, I know they'd be! ( The water that is!)

Michigan :thumbsup2 , Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and NW New York. Michigan beaches are absolutely gorgeous.

But, then again, I'm a bit biased. ;)

The Great Lakes beaches are beautiful (though I'm a bit biased too) but not in the spring! The water is much too cold to swim, and if the OP is thinking spring break or thereabouts, maybe even too cold to walk on the beach or play in the sand. And there's always the chance of a late snow... :rotfl:

For someone looking for a beach destination for July or August Michigan can't be beat, but spring calls for some place a little further south.

I've always been partial to Myrtle Beach...

But to be honest...I usually spend more time on the golf courses than the beach.

I have a reservation on Ft. Myers Beach for next April. I'm going to hang onto it and see what happens. A lot can happen in 10 months.

We are planning a trip for spring. I HOPE the cleanup is done, but we are going anyway. Will leave from Port Canaveral. Will spend time in Orlando before we leave and then will go to Nassau and Grand Bahamas.
We might do a beach day before we leave.... we will see.

It starting to look like Galveston's beaches may end being some of the cleanest on the Gulf. This is weird and sad all at the same time.
