First night will be on the Amtrak Autotrain (in a sleeper TG!) and the second nitght will be at Cocoa Beach so we can do some nature exploring and hiking trails at Meritt Island National Wildlife Refuge all day Saturday. One time there we came accross a Florida Panther. We reported it to the park ranger and he told us it was probably a BOBCAT! We know what a bobcat looks like... this cat's shoulders were 30" off the ground and the tail was hanging like the letter J almost touching the ground... bobcat

Anyway... we're packing this weekend. :thumbsup2

Wow!!!!! A Panther! That is something VERY Special! The suggestion you could confuse a Bobcat (Which is only a bit bigger than a large Tomcat) with a Panther is just silly. That is such a rare sighting. What time of day was it? Don't forget there are reported sightings of very lage black cats, possibly a Jaguar, from Texas and New Mexico all the way to Western Maryland. I believe these sightings, NOT BIG FOOT tho. I'm not a kook but even here in Jersey we have had Black Bear as large as 600 pounds coming into the city area only 15 miles out of NYC so anything is possible as far as I am concerned. Hope you have a good time and have fun on the train.

Here it is. Unfortunately, it is a scan of a film print. Note that the surface the cat is on is 16ft accross. There is nothing else to give you a visual guage of size and DW shot with probably an 80mm lens so it is further away than it looks. It was around 10 am in the morning.

Sorry... didn't mean to hijack the thread :rotfl:

Maybe Jim MIA could help identify? Isn't he a park ranger? Maybe he has seen a panther before.

Back on topic.........I am getting closer and closer to single digits for my trip home to SSR!

4 days AKV here we come :cool1: :cool1:   :rotfl:

I'm leaving this afternoon - first time at SSR!!!

YAY for all of you - have fun, fun, fun!! We're still 4 mos away til our trip to AKV - but we're just 4 weeks away from a trip to DL! :wizard:

My folks live in Ocala, about an hour north of Orlando. Their property backs up to a wooded area owned by the federal government, and they've seen a bobcat several times. But a couple of weeks ago they saw a Florida panther in their backyard, and it chased down and ate a squirrel while they watched (from INSIDE the house! :) ). Mom went to the library to find out what exactly they saw, and they advised her to report it to the wildlife folks, which she did. The Florida panther is endangered. Much bigger than a bobcat, and the panther has a tail whereas the bobcat has a bobbed tail.
