O'hana's - remind me why I didn't listen

Really? Worst meal EVER? worse than Waffle House or McDonalds or Burger King or Taco Bell or frozen fish sticks? You've never had worst tasting food than at a dinner you paid $30 for? Wow. ;-)

For those worried about there ADR's because of what they read, take everything with a grain of salt. Seriously, I've read some funny stuff online in relation to hotels and restaurants. Ive seen Motel 6/Holiday Inns get great reviews and the Grand Floridian or Ritz Carlton get terrible reviews. Does that mean that the Motel 6 is of better quality? Lol, of course not. People tend to rate things based on their expectations and in terms of "good value", so when an expensive hotel/restaurant isn't the end all of experiences for them, then they sharply criticize it as if it was of horrendous quality.

In this case, I think Ohana is suffering from an inflated reputation from the past and some overstatements from overzealous online posters. While I think the menu changes are a step down, I still consider the restaurant very, very good. The bread and salad and bread pudding, as well as the grilled steak and turkey, make this a great dining location IMO. Dining at Ohana is an event, moreso than just getting a table at your local Chili's. It is family style dining and interactive in that way, as well as just having a vibrant atmosphere. While Im not a huge fan of hula woman, I do not think she detracts from the experience in the way some have over-characterized. If you really want a private, quiet dinner, then I suggest you not dine at a family restaurant at Walt Disney World, the family vacation capital.

The only way I can see this being the worst meal ever is if you found nasty stuff in the food (bugs, fingernails, finger, etc etc). And even if this was the case, we all know that would be a most isolated, bizarre incident and certainly not anywhere near the norm or standard, and thus not very relevant.

As for the food being spicy, I am assuming the original poster meant "Spicy" in terms of the meat having an herb/spice rub on it. I do not think "spicy" was meant to mean hot and spicy like hot buffalo sauce.

Lastly, those who said not every experience is the same have hit the nail on the head. For example, Ive been to McDonald's many many times. Sometimes my fries are just right, sometimes too salty or not salty enough, sometimes overcooked or not quite done enough. And that is just fries! Overall, I like McD's fries. As for Ohana, sometimes I go and the steak and other meats are just perfect, but once the meat was too well done. It happens. Overall, I still recommend Ohana.

I would like to remind everyone that, while lively discussion is encouraged, personal attacks are not allowed on these boards. A few of the posts here have come very close to causing this thread to be closed. Please be respectful of other posters.

I wouldnt eat in those places as I dont eat fast food. I still rate Ohana way down the scale of restaurants to eat in in WDW.

We eat there enough time each year to have experienced a wide range of seasonings and marinades on all the meats. Sometimes there is a lot and sometimes not, I think it depends on the pit chefs that night. We still love it though and it will continue to be our favorite place to eat.

This is the one I am most worried about. I have not changed the ADR yet, as my kids love this place, but the changes in the menu and the dropping of many of my favorite items has me second guessing. I wonder if being July 4th had anything to do with what sounds like rushing you through dinner--the placing of meat on your plate without asking you if you wanted it? If they wanted to turn the tables around fast I guess having a person who has a voice that grates on your nerves is a great way to move you out of there. Sorry your experience was bad.

Now who is getting nasty. Calm down everyone. Oh, and why is it they should change the menu, etc. because you don't like it when many people have claimed to like it the way it is. Everyone is different, as are their opinions. Voicing them is fine, as long as it is done in a respectful way.

That is my point. Is it okay to call someone ridiculous just because they toss in an IMHO? That IS nasty. I wasn't calling her an idiot, just playing the same game.

Our group ate at Ohana's on Friday evening and had a great time. The food was great, got refills quickly when we asked. The server with the skewers asked if we wanted the meat he had.

We also ordered a birthday cake and they came out and made a fuss.

We waited a little longer because we wanted a table to view the fireworks but it wasn't too bad. We will be going back again.

All reviews are from the posters point of view!

I have been 3 times, old menu, new menu, so of course I compare. My parents have only been once - new menu - and they loved it - raved about it! We got there early, and my dad sat down orderd drinks and the greasy fried 'chips' and dip - he loved it!

Their reviews would be entirely different than mine! I agree that the meat has some kinda "rub" on it - rubs are popular nowadays, kinda spicey imho, maybe flavorful for my parents!

There you go, only you can decide! The boards are a wonderful place to get a variety of reviews and opinions - my dd loved the games the first time, the second not so much, maybe she just outgrew them, maybe its just time for our family to try something new... :confused3

I'm not a bread pudding fan, so I dont think its fair to judge that - my dh and mom are, they LOVED it!! They also were too stuffed to enjoy it!! :rotfl: I'm in the camp that thought rice and pineapples were more "Hawaiian" than cheese potatoes and bread pudding, but then I think... Hawaii consumes more Spam than any other state, so maybe we'll see spam on the menu someday!!

bottom line, you cant please all the people all the time! I love the posters that give their opinion, and then let us decide for ourselves if its a fit for our family. The menus at allearsnet.com also have helped me make choices based on our likes and dislikes...

I am sorry to hear about your experience. In our case we never had a problem with waiters and food and even to Lipoa... the lady you mentioned who has laryngitis. Last Sept. she even went to out table to welcome us back... every trip we make sure O'hana is on our list... About the menu change I guess they really had to curve some after the free dining plan was implemented. And yes, we still plan to go back this Sept 06... Top 4 list...O'hana to welcome us on our arrival, Whispering Canyon to wake up us the next day... Boma for a bountiful meal the 3rd and a farewell meal is always at Crystal Palace :cloud9:

We love Ohana's, and will continue to go there for our first meal everytime we are at the World. :goodvibes Next to Boma, this is a winner everytime for us. We enjoy spicy food, even ds 2yrs..but this was not spicy food at all. I think that maybe your timing was not the best choice for the locale and date. I would have to believe that any ts on this date and time would be subject to mishaps...everyone trying to score a good view for the fireworks. The Hawaiian host in my opinion is over the top, but this is the appeal. Tell me that any kid wouldn't gravitate to that personality! Ohana's...we love it  ..and all of the quirky people and every last delicious piece of grilled meat and trimmings!

We have only been once but we really loved it, my DD ate her weight in the grilled shrimp, I dont even have the heart to tell her its no longer on the menu..lol I believe I will like the bread pudding better than the pinneaple.. I am going to miss those delicious little wontons but I am so excited to be able to go back to Ohanas for my bday and this time have my husband with me as well!

We have been going for years, twice since the new menu. The first time on the new menu, I really didn't like it, the second time it was much better. I did not eat any sausage the second time. I burped it all night long the first time. Stay away from the sausage. The shrimp was larger and better on the old menu. I am not a bread pudding fan, I loved the pineapple on the old. So I guess we have to take the good with the bad. If they make many more changes that are Neg. to me then I am done. We will eat there for the Steak and pork, I love the Salad. I hope the restaurants keep their reputations up. I know that Disney had a billboard up in May with a hiring bonus on it. They are short on employees.

Ate there for dinner on Saturday the 8th and really enjoyed it. (Although I didn't really like the wonton chips either and could do without the sausage, but everything else was good...)
