Ohana's menu change

My boyfriend and I did not find the rice to be amazing. Both of us are Irish, though, and are looking forward to the potatoes; they sound outstanding! :) I adored the wontons and would be upset if those were taken away, but I doubt that would happen.

As far as the veggies change, it doesn't bother me at all.

I'm just curious (although it might just be a moot point by the time I get there in Sept.) as to what type of rice they serve. Is it stir fried or is it just plain brown rice? I love fried rice but dislike plain brown or white. While I'm at it I'll ask about the green beans also. Stir fried with ginger etc.??? Thanks! :goodvibes

It was fried rice. The green beans was sauteed with some ginger, garlic, soy sauce and topped with crumbled bacon! It was sooo good.

Thanks Oogie. Sounds good! I would have liked it. Oh well, I'll eat the scalloped potatos but I don't think I'm gonna care for the mixed veggies...

Don't we have enough potatoes (french fries) at counter service. Rice seems to fit better with the other foods served there. :confused3 This is one of favorite places to eat at, we like the rice princess:

Yum, cheesy potatos sound wonderful. We aren't a big rice eating family. Now the wontons, that would be war!

We are going there on the 20th and I hope I can still get the rice! I am not a real fan of Ohana's but the rest of our party is. I was one to make a meal out of just the rice!

I can deal with the potatoes instead of rice, even though the rice was a nice change, but I am upset that they took away my stringbeans! :sad1: My mom and I were looking forward to returning with my dad this January.

Maybe roasted potatoes on a skewer or grilled somehow, but this sounds like Aunt Pearl's potato casserole we eat at family reunions. Rice does fit better with the Polynisian theme.

I wouldn't worry that this change was permanent yet. I have been to Ohanas several times when there were menu changes (yes, printed on the menus) and was told this was something they were "trying out" or thinking of changing to, or whatever, but two days later, they were gone and the old menus back. I was told when I asked, that it happens on occasion that they need to change the menus on a moments notice due to supply issues, quality problems with the produce or meat, etc.

I hope this change is only temporary as well, or that it will be an addition, not a substitution. I prefer the rice to potatoes, and feel it is more authentic (though Ohanas is hardly an authentic restaurant, lol!) I also prefer the green beans to any mixed veg dish which undoubtedly would be the ubiquitous frozen veggie "California Blend" which is always tasteless--yuck!

Over the years there have been several changes. Before the rice, they had the LoMein Noodles.

Before the current wontons, they were filled with pork and even before that they had spring (egg) rolls.

We've forgotten what was before the barbeque pork but when it first came out it was bad.

They also changed the bread this year to the pineapple coconut from the banana.

They have gotten rid of the smoked salmon and chicken wrapped in banana leaves as well.

With the exception of the bread, we have eventually liked the changes but this time the change actually started out tasting good.

I don't think the cheesy potatoes complement the rest of the meal, either, but I was never crazy for the rice. I loved the green beans. I'm going to have to figure out how to make them on my own! If anyone has been successful, let me know!

If they continue to change the menu, I will just have to keep drinking more pina coladas until it tastes like the old stuff! j/k!

Lulu, if you go back a few pages, there's a thread about the 'Ohana menu change and a poster (Auntie something ;) ) put up the recipe.

I've made the green beans at home following the recipe that I got from 'Ohana and it turned out pretty darn good. Not the exact same taste, but pretty close. I've put some of my own touches on it too, like adding diced bits of ham, using the same recipe for brocolli instead of beans. Still yummy!

I wish they could give the recipe for the wontons, but when I asked they said it's wasn't made on-site. It's actually frozen and they cook it there. :goodvibes

we just ate here last Wed. We had salad, fried rice, wontons, mixed vegs, and chicken wings along with the different kinds of meat, everthing was really good....of yeah you cant forget the pineapple bread to start the meal, and the Fresh pineapple and carmel to end it.....yummy... We also had a really great CM here too by the name of Jeffery....he kept calling our DS12...Lance Armstrong...cause he had on a yellow shirt...joking and laughing with the whole family....what a nice guy....

Hi: I booked that restaurant for dear hubby who loves meat, but I only eat veges, I was looking forward to the beans and fried rice. Does anyone know what type of cheese is in the potatoes, if it is cheddar I am sunk. I am allergic to cheddar.

Thanks,

Deb.

I didn't think it was cheddar but I could be wrong. It just didn't have that taste to it.
