I'm thinking of trying 'Ohana's on our next trip...however, one of the people in our party does not eat pork (religious reasons) and would probably not want to eat food that's served on the same dish as pork. Do you think, if we asked, they would be willing to substitute the other meats in place of the pork?

The meats aren't served together on a plate. One of the waiters brings the meat around on these big skewers (one type of meat per skewer) and will individually serve the meat pieces.

Although, they might be grilled near each other on the grill, if that makes a difference.

You can get as much or as little of any meat. I don't really eat any of the meat so I just eat the shrimp! I ask for more and there is never a problem.

Make sure you tell your server at the beginning of the meal and they will try to keep the skewers separate. The normal rotation is steak and pork loin then turkey and sausage. You can get as much or as little of anything they serve.

The only problem would be that now they don't have shrimp on the skewers anymore. It's steak, pork, sausage, and turkey. The shrimp is now part of the appetizer.

That's correct but you can still get as much shrimp as you want. I just asked for another bowl of them. My mom would get all the meat but I only liked the shrimp. It is not a problem. You can get as much as you like of anything they have even that wonderful bread pudding!

Right, we did ask for extras during our last trip, although we never got them (our server was AWFUL).

Hrmm... and if this bread pudding is as good as everyone says, I might have to get some 2nds.... that reminds me though, I think I read somewhere that the bread pudding has pineapple and coconut in it... is that true? I hope not as I don't like either... but... I'd try it anyway. :teeth:

The bread used is the same pineapple bread they used to serve during the actual meal. They took it away and it is now made into bread pudding. Have you ever had the bread there? I find no fruit pieces in it, Just a slight flavoring. It is delicious! We too had a terrible server last time. Can't remember his name but it was 4 letters and girly for a male. He argued with us that he already gave us our sides when he hadn't. There was nothing on the table but meat! LOL! Finally he got so angry that another CM took over and served us for the remainder of the meal.

and it's for religious reasons (if they are Kosher), then I'm not sure O'Hana's is the right place for you. Remember that they cook the pork and sausage on skewers on the same grill as the turkey and beef. There is no guarantee that the skewers that are being used for the beef were not previously used for pork, or that they are not placing skewers of beef on the grill where skewers of pork or sausage were previously placed.

Not all Kosher people are the same...some keep Kosher in the home but eat regularly outside (while avoiding pork or shellfish products) and not worrying about the dishes. Others would not be able to eat at any restaurant that served any pork or shellfish products.

You might want to double check w/ your guest as to their comfort level with the restaurant. If they are okay with it as long as they don't eat it, then you can just tell the server not to give them any of the pork or sausage. Since the shrimp are now served in bowls, that shouldn't be a problem either.

Good luck!
