Long time lurker, decided to take the plunge and finally add a little something to the community. Im 27 and live near Ft. Lauderdale, and visit with my girlfriend (23) about 5 times a year on the Seasonal Pass. We stay on property as often as possible, and enjoy the awesome restaurants in the World as much as (ok, probably more than) the parks.

We loved the old menu at O'hana so much that we hadn't missed dining there in 2 years. As such, we were interested to try the new stuff, but had some reservations about missing items and their replacements (mostly from the GF, shes a lot more picky than I am).

The first surprise we had was that the rotating lazy susan of appetizers was gone, replaced with individual plates. We definitely liked the old wontons better than the new tortilla style wonton chips, but the new ones weren't bad dipped in the peanut sauce. Which brings me to the sauces. We were really disappointed that they took away the ginger soy dipping sauce, absolutely everything tasted good dipped in that stuff. So that was a buzzkill...luckily our buzz from pre-dinner martinis at mizner's in the floridian outweighed the kill from the missing sauce :) I much preferred the new cheesy potatoes to the old rice, the GF liked the rice a little more but still enjoyed the potatoes. The new shrimp were pretty good, not as good as the grilled, but still tasty. And the salad and wings were both the same, AWESOME. love that dressing and the wing sauce is outstanding. I enjoyed the new BBQ glaze that came on the pork skewers, as did my GF. Steak and turkey were still excellent. My GF wouldnt touch any kind of sausage with a ten foot pole, but I'm usually all about it. This stuff was pretty bland though, tasted more like a hot dog than anything else. Would pass on it next time and gorge on the other meats. The new bread pudding with ice cream and bananas foster sauce dessert, in both our opinions, was about 100 times better than the old pineapple and caramel deal. I already grabbed the recipe from here and plan on making it on Christmas. Top notch stuff there.

Well there you have it. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, and its nice to join the community!

Welcome to the DIS Boards!

I really enjoyed reading your comparison of the old and new menus at 'Ohana. Thanks!

I went after the menu change, never had gone before, but I also loved the potatoes and chicken wings, as well as the bread pudding. Any chance that you'd share the recipe?

Grabbed this from a post here :)

OHANA BREAD PUDDING
5 eggs
3 cups whole milk
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 1/2 cup sugar
8 cups french or ohana breakfast bread

In bowl mix eggs, milk , salt, sugar and nutmeg. Set aside.
Cut bread in mediam pieces, place on cookie sheet pan put in 350 degree oven.
Bake bread until lightly toasted, about 15min. Remove bread and place in egg and milk mixture.
Place mixture in a greased 10in cake pan and bake at 325 degree for 1hr.
Let stand 5 min , serve hot with ice cream.

BANANA FOSTER SAUCE
4 oz sugar
4 oz brown sugar
4 oz corn syrup
4 oz unsatled butter
1cup heavy cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
1cup spiced rum
1cup banana slices

Combine sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and half of heavy cream in a large pan. Bring to a boil and slowly add remaining heavy cream keeping mixtue at a steady boil.
Add spiced rum and flambe (I did not have rum and probably would have burned the house down trying to flambe so I skipped this. HEH)
Candy will brown slightly; cook 3 min until candy forms into a firm ball in cold wate.
Remove from heat and add vanilla. Add sliced bananas. Serve warm.

I didn't have the "old version" of 'Ohana to compare to but completely enjoyed my first visit earlier this month.

I have been trying to get the bread pudding recipe for over a month now! Thank you so much!!!
By any chance would you have the potato recipe?

Welcome to the DIS!!!
Thanks for your comparison of the old versus the new menus at 'OHana. We very much enjoyed our meal there in October, but we had not been there before, so we couldn't compare the menus.

Also grabbed this from another thread :)

Combine the Following Ingredients:
- 1 lb. 70 Count Idaho Russet Potato (washed and sliced)
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 1/4 cup of cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup of sweet onions
- 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper

Place in greased 2" hotel pan and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting. Serve hot.

I enjoyed my first time at Ohana . LoL I also learned from the Dis that i did not have to take all the skewers. :sunny:

I made the potatoes last night from the recipe posted a few weeks ago. Like a poster mentioned on the previous thread, doesn't quite taste the same as Ohana's, but quite tasty non the less and have definately added it to my recipe folder.

I can't bake a box cake without messing it up so I don't think I'll attempt the Banannas Foster ;)

Enjoyed reading your review ~ Thanx for posting.

The potato recipe seems like it wouldn't make much. How many servings would you say you got out of it?

I used three russet potatoes. I would say I got about 4 servings. It doesn't seem like much, but when you slice them thin and add the other ingredients, it does stretch it. Remember, it is pretty rich too with all that heavy cream. I also covered it for the first 1/2 hour. I think if I hadn't it would have browned too much

Thanks for sharing your review. DH and I have decided to skip 'Ohana on our next trip, but I like reading people's opinions about it. :)

I made the potatoes on Christmas day. Everyone loved them!

I used 4 1# potatoes and quadrupled the recipe. I used my small food processor to thinly slice them. I put it in a 13"x9" baking dish. Awesome!!!
