Ohana Question

So, I have sort of an odd question about Ohana for those of you who have been there. DH & I are not very big on interactive things especially when at a restaurant. For example, we have NO interest whatsoever in dining at 50s Prime Time. It's just not our kind of thing. Based on some of the posts on here it sounds like there is a small element of that at Ohana as well. What can you tell me about the level of interactive activities going on at Ohana? Thanks in advance :)

Nothing to be concerned about. There are a few activities for the kids...coconut races..parade for the kiddos...Definately no "forced fun" for those who don't want to participate. :)

eta: be sure to cross Whispering Canyon off your list.

Depending on where you are sitting, you may not even notice. We were seated far from the action (a bummer as we had little kids who didn't want to participate but wanted to watch which we couldn't when seated). Overall, I was glad not to have all that craziness right by my table. Request to be seated far from the coconut races and you'll be fine.

If you are looking for the type of restaurant where you can just sit and relax and enjoy your meal, RUN AWAY from 'Ohana. It can be very loud. There is an MC who is really loud and somewhat obnoxious that we found to be pretty intrusive on our meals. The have parades and games for the kids that make the restaurant even louder. If you happen to have a table next to the path that the kids do the coconut race on, be prepaired to have your feet hit with coconuts and having rude parents push you so they can take a picture. We have given this place 3 chances. Once we had a table next to a window facing MK durring Wishes which was great, the other 2 times we had issues with everything else. It isn't "forced fun" as the PP said, but it is also not exactly something you can get away from.

These issues don't even count the food or service which are both pretty awful, IMO.

Please note that 50's is not as bad as it sounds or as bad as what you may have heard. Your "Aunt", "Mom", "Unlce", "Cousin" etc. etc. will only lay it on as much as you want. If you don't seem interested in some of the antics or if you tell them you just want to eat, you won't have a problem. :thumbsup2

You won't be forced to participate in anything. We never do as our kids are older, although we find it fun to watch the younger kids.

You will have to put up with the servers calling you "cousin" but it is all in good fun and not intrusive at all. Remember, 'Ohana means "family".

Ohana is our favorite rest. The only problem we have is it seems like everytime we go there is a thunderstorm. The fun is what you make it. Personally I like that they give the opportunity to dance with my wife if I want but I don't have to. The food is wonderful sorry that ohthepain did not like but I am a grill guy so maybe that was the issue. Yes they call you cousin and yes it can be loud but we love it. We have had a late ADR before and watched wishes and they piped in the music. We also like to eat then head to the beach to watch wishes. We watched 4th of july fire works there from the beach and it was incredible.

save room for desert!

Thank you so much everyone! You set me at ease. I don't mind noise at all during the meal and it would be fun to watch all the little ones participate in the coconut races. Now that I know I won't have to hula for my meal I feel much better. :rotfl:

Last three times we went it was raining/thunderstorms as well! The problem with this is that people from the aloha dinner show take over the lobby, trying to get a seat at Ohana. This can make for a longer wait than normal, which is fine if you are waiting near the bar ;)

I was just at Ohana with co-workers (I was at a convention at the Contemporary) and the meal was great! Wasn't loud at all, but we were far away from the grill.

As with anything else at Disney, you have to try it at least once.

I wouldn't be at all concerned about interaction. I can foresee some kid/coconut drama if you're close to the aisle but nothing that would really bother me. Ask for a window seat, which has a better view anyway, and you should be just fine. We also love the food, so enjoy!

bahahaahahahhaahhaahhaahaha omg thats hilarious. LOL! :rotfl::lmao:

It sounds like you are already OK with it, but another vote for "you will be fine" here! My in-laws hated Whispering Canyon and aren't into antics at all...but they love Ohana. When we were there with them we were seated far from the emcee and we did find her noise to be a little annoying, but only mildly so because it was late and we were tired. I think you will be fine there.

My wife and I have done both. We tried 50's as a spur of the moment thing and didn't realize what we were getting into. 'Ohana is nothing like it!! We ate there the night we got engaged, on our first anniversary, and a year ago with a group of friends who just asked me to book another ressie for this coming July. Yea an mc walks around singing and they have races with kids but thats it. It is our favorite restaurant anywhere. The food is awesome and the atmosphere is great. You will love it! O yea, the Banana Foster is to DIE for!!!
