I just read a review on another discussion board and the person mentioned that they didn't receive the shrimp or the turkey at Ohana's. This review posted yesterday, the 14th. Has anyone gone recently and can tell us what the deal is?

I was there on the 4th - can't remember getting turkey or not - I do remember sausage(yuck) and beef(YUM!) but we were definitely served shrimp.

I hope this isn't anything permanent...I love the turkey...it's my favorite meat they serve!

We were there a year or so ago and they didn't have the turkey - had sausage instead. We asked and they told us that occassionally they change the menu when they have supply problems. I wouldn't worry about it.

On this past Saturday they definitely had both shrimp and turkey.

The shrimp was not the shrimp on skewers though, right? They changed their menu in Jan. and no longer have the large tiger shrimp as part of the meat offering but now have a shrimp as part of the "appetizer" dishes, right?

I have gone to 'Ohana for years and the reason I went was the skewered shrimp...my husband would peel 'em and I'd eat 'em as fast as he could peel 'em! :thumbsup2 I'm very sad that they took it away! :sad2: I'm sure I'll go to try the new stuff, but it just wont be the same! :badpc: :stir: :furious:

They actually changed the shrimp last fall. We were there in October and the shrimp had been changed to an appetizer. The skewered meats were steak, turkey, sausage and pork.

There was a really big backlash on these boards about 'Ohana changing the menu - they used to have wontons as well and no longer have those, either, and the pineapple with caramel sauce is gone (replaced by a DELICIOUS bread pudding). But I think it's kind of settled down now, I don't seem to read many complaints anymore.

For what it's worth, even though the shrimp isn't on the skewers, I still thought they were great!

I guess I'll have to give it a try then...sorry about the time of change...I don't know why I thought it changed in Jan...I guess the menu I saw had been updated in Jan... :rolleyes2 I know the last time I had been there (I lived locally) and by there, I guess I mean the Tambu Lounge :drinking1 :rolleyes1 one of the bartenders told me they were considering doing away with the shrimp...looks like they came up with a sort of "compromise" I guess. I'm picky about shrimp as I'm a late bloomer when it comes to eating any seafood, but I'm willing to try!

I DO have a question...how is the shrimp presented? Is it with it's shell on, tail only, warm? Just curious...

Thanks for the info! :)

So do you mean the fried wantons with the dipping sauces?

If they don't have them anymore, do you know what they replaced them with?

We are looking forward to eating there in May, and I hope they don't keep changing the menu.

I was there on January 14, and it sounds like the menu was the same as other more recent visitors have reported. The appetizer is fried wonton strips - not stuffed like they were before, just like chips. They are served with three sauces. I don't like them. :crazy2: Also delivered is the traditional salad with honey lime dressing, which is still great.

The appetizers are the honey coriander wings (about the same as ever, but saucier) and the sweet & sour peel & eat shrimp. The shrimp themselves are very similar to the old shrimp they grilled on the skewers, but instead they are sauteed and served in a nice sweet & sour sauce. I like them :thumbsup2 , and you can still have all you want.

The skewer dishes are usually marinated beef sirloin, turkey, pork loin, and pork sausage. All are good, except I'm not really a fan of the sausage. These are accompanied by "Maui Scalloped Potatoes" which are a sliced potatoes au gratin dish. I liked them, but they are a little on the oily side. You also get stir fried veggies, which are about the same as they always were, but now delivered at a more approproate time. I miss the fried rice, and I think it would be appropriate delivered at this point.

My understanding is that you can still get the caramel pineapple dessert if you ask for it. However, I think the new bananas foster bread pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream is to die for! :cloud9:

I think 'Ohana is still a really good restaurant. If they would replace the wonton "chips" with the old fried wontons and bring back the banana bread, they would be better than ever, IMO!

Tim, who has eaten at 'Ohana at least once every year since 1997!

I found the "new" shrimp a lot easier to peel than the ones on the skewers. As I recall, the skewer shrimp were also a little spicy and I remember how they occasionally burned my nail beds and the sauce stained my fingers (like eating Cheez Doodles). Then again, the shrimp was all I ever ate there--that and the dearly departed wontons. So I guess what I'm saying is, the "new" shrimp are a definite improvement in my eyes. Enjoy!!!

No pineapple at all, we asked and they just do not have it anymore :(

I liked it the old way better, I do not like the scolloped potatoes as I do not like the cheese, and not the wontons are gone :( However, I will still go as there are other things I do like and the remaining food, salad, bread, wings and skewered steak are al very good. Don't like the sausages though.

Thanks so much for posting this thread! We have PS for our first night in April and I don't like the sound of the new menu. I must have missed the conversations previously. Nope, don't like change. I want the old 'Ohana. I guess I'll make a PS somewhere else. Thanks again for the heads up! :thumbsup2

I didn't like the sausage either. I could go and just make a meal out of that salad, the wings, the steak and the taters(we loved them) and the bread pudding is amazing too :) I also really enjoyed the peanut dipping sauce which shocked me because I HATE peanut butter and peanuts in general aren't my favorite.

I loved the old 'Ohana. We went in Dec and really didn't like it. I found the stir fried vegetables hard and tasteless, when the green beans at 'Ohana with bacon and onion was one of my favorite things! The cheesy potatoes weren't bad, but they tasted very "processed" like boxed scallopped potatoes, and I don't think it goes with the menu as well as the fried rice did. The salad and wings were still yummy. I liked the flavor of the shrimp but I think that unpeeled shrimp in a sauce is very awkward for a diner to try to peel and eat at the table. It's not an experience I would want again. The wings, dipping sauces and yummy honey-lime dressed salad were still good. The wonton chips that replaced the old shrimp-vegetable wontons are awful. The old wontons were crispy with a fresh flavorful filling. These are cold, greasy boring wonton skins fried in oil, in a basket. I felt bad, but we each ate two chips and that was it. The whole basket sat there. The steak and turkey were hot and cooked well- they tasted good, too. The pork was ok, but I'm not a big pork fan. The sausage was horrible- bland and somewhat like bologna. There was no more pineapple or banana breads to start with either. I have to say that although I missed the cute dessert of old, the new dessert was the only improvement. The bread pudding with bananas foster sauce was rich, sweet, and delicious. Not one complaint about the dessert.

I will not be returning to 'Ohana anytime soon with the menu the way it is. I would love to see them rethink some of these changes.

I can't remember which poster posted this but about 2-3 weeks ago I saw Ohana pictures and I saw wonton chips AND the old great wontons. Anyone else see that? Hopefully it'll happen more often!

We actually enjoy the sausage. While we miss some of the older items, we like everything that is on this menu as well. We have seen several menu changes over the years and 'Ohana is still our favorite place to eat.
