Oh what a predicament....**new update**

OK, I think I know what I am going to do. I really hate to be gone at Christmas since the whole family will be home once again. DH is still saying no. (although he said we could go without him and believe me I will! LOL)
According to my son he will be home again in February before they deploy. So I think I will plan to go in February instead. He said either one would be fine with him (my son that is). This way I'll have more time to save, hopefully rates will be cheaper and it will give me more time to convince DH!

I already decided that as much as I am usually opposed to pulling older kids out of school for a vaction, I will make an exception this time around. I'll contact the schools (jr. and sr. high) principal and explain the situation and hopefully they will not count it against them.

So, sounds like a better plan, right????

But your son has no idea if he's going to actually get that leave in february. It seems highly unlikely to me that if he's deploying in Feb he's going to get leave. Getting leave at Christmas, then again 2 months later?

My cousin was set to be deployed and had approved leave...then things changed, and well he didnt get it. Same thing just happened to him a few weeks ago.......remember this is the military, in a time of war, you dont always get what they say your going to get! His chances are much better of getting home at christmas then they are right before a deployment, especially if the dates are moved up!

No, they are getting the 2 week leave before they deploy. The reason they are getting the time off at Christmas is because the training they need to do before deploying cannot be done during the holiday period so they were told they would get that off.

He works in the company headquarters for the officer in charge of the unit (temp assignment while he was healing from surgery). The way they are doing it is 2 weeks before deployment, 2 weeks 6 months into the deployment and 2 weeks after they get home. It is a 1 year minimum deployment.

He's been watching units come and go for over a year now and thats been the norm. Maybe its different depending on where you are going, what you do and where you are stationed. Where is your cousin and what does he do?

I know that things can change at any given time but I trust he knows exactly whats happening since he is directly involved and not just in a unit being told different things. He is very close with his commander so I trust what he is saying. If anything changes, his deployment will be delayed and not moved up.

so glad you've worked something out, cathy! just remember, if you stay in one of the resort hotels (i can't remember which ones they are) that february is when the cheerleader competitions are, and while your sons will probably LOVE this (LOL), i'm told the girls can be quite loud (they can't help it, it IS a competition and they have to practice) and depending on when you're in your room, it could be a problem for your family. just a reminder!

LOL My boys are ages 13, 15, 18 and 21. If there are cheerleaders everywhere they are going to think they died and went to heaven! I probably wouldn't be able to get them to leave the resort if I tried! LOL

I think that sounds like a perfect plan. Look into getting two rooms at the all stars or Pop. The advantage is 2 bathroooms!

Well, you better hope for early February! A lot of people forget that Peak Season starts in February. In 2006, Peak resort rates begin February 16, so make sure you're checking in before then if you're still trying to save the money!

I hope it all works out for you, too, but after 10 years in the military, we've learned not to count on anything until it's happening. Deployment dates change frequently, both getting moved up and pushed back....and since we're on war-time footing, changes are more frequent and unpredictable. Hoping for the best for you all!!!
