Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

More great updates...and more minigolf. As much as I feel we have had tons of experience on minigolf courses, reading your report definitely has me thinking we need to make an effort to do one or two with this upcoming trip. Myrtle Beach has some of the most beautiful minigolf courses, but reading your reports makes me at least do a comparison of a few in the Orlando/Kissimmee area for good measure! :-)

I have never played PuttPutt in Orlando, but if I ever decide to do so, I know who to ask where the best places are! We've thought about doing the Haunted House one at Universal as we like the Cat meow-ing effect we here when passing by!

Orlando is my escape from the realities of life. With such a tragedy in Orlando, I have had a hard time reading my usual Disney/Universal news without getting down. Keeping up with your TR is a reminder of good times!

Great end to the day Gina, TGI always seems to hit the spot :goodvibes

It certainly does :thumbsup2.

I usually do enjoy the planning process. But it seems like there just isn't enough time to do it. We're driving, so I don't have to worry about prices of flights and restrictions on luggage (or extra luggage space for stuffies). I just need to find some dedicated time to search on-line for the right things that will work for our wacky traveling trio. Fortunately, the finances are already earmarked and ready to go once I make some choices. We've been saving for a while. When you're celebrating everything, you need the money to back your play!!!

I know you love TGI Friday's - have you signed up for their savings card? You can earn points for free food and such and each time you show the card you get free chips and salsa. You can easily sign up on line. You might be able to submit the most recent receipt to get credit for your dinner??

I hear you on the whole time thing.....there are never enough hours in the day. I had someone ask me on the weekend if I had my photo book from April finished yet, and I'm like FINISHED? LOL, I haven't even started it yet :rotfl:. Too much trip reporting and October planning!!

I do have a TGI Friday's "Give Me More Stripes" membership but I NEVER remember to use it :o. The one and only time I did take it in with us the server had no idea what it was :rotfl2:.

Some good food and good fun times together. We like Friendly's, it has had a bit of a makeover. They were sending 25% off for joining the email club too.

Oh good, I am glad they have continued that promotion! :) 25% off is a pretty nifty savings.

I have yet to go there for breakfast, but someday want to give it a try. Their breakfast entrees look delish.

I am loving your trip report as usual! We were in Orlando all last week and one of the few things that I was looking forward to doing when we got home was catching up on your report. We went to the Superstar Character Breakfast also and it was a trip highlight for us as well. Universal really does that right. I felt really lucky that we bought our tickets in advance and still got in with the cheaper price.

Welcome back!! I am so happy to hear that you guys had as much fun as we did at the Superstar Character Breakfast....AND that you managed to go at the lower price . As much as the $35 price tag makes me shudder a bit, you know.....I'd probably still pay it, since the experience was as awesome as it was.

Were you in Orlando when Tropical Storm Colin rolled through, then? That rain!!! :scared1:

Just dropping in to say I'm still following along, but I haven't had time for responses!

I saw this today and thought of you!

OMG! They are so cute! :cloud9: I'm still in the dark ages with a 5c (sigh.....I am sooooo behind the times) but those cases almost make me want to upgrade to a 6+ !

Mini golf is a fun way to pass the time. It's not too time consuming, it's good exercise (but yet nothing too taxing), and its pretty inexpensive in the grand scheme of the vacation cost. I would recommend staying with some of the more elaborate courses (Congo River, Pirates Cove, or Hollywood Drive In Golf)....they cost a little more but the amazing theming makes it worth the extra money.

Congo River has some sort of "length of stay" or multi-day pass (as many rounds as you wish to golf)......I'm not sure if its valid for 7 days or 14. I am almost tempted to find out, and if its 14 day, it might be my sole remaining addition to our October trip. I am sure Steve and I would enjoy MANY rounds over the course of our two weeks in the fall, and more than get our money's worth out of it.

Orlando is my escape from the realities of life. With such a tragedy in Orlando, I have had a hard time reading my usual Disney/Universal news without getting down. Keeping up with your TR is a reminder of good times!

My heart has been just breaking for the residents of Orlando. My Florida bestie sent me an email early Sunday morning alerting me to the tragedy, and like you.....I have found that the updates and news stories have been just like a knife to the heart. Such senseless violence. I am cheered a bit, though, by the outpouring of stories that highlight the wonderful acts of human decency that have risen from the ashes of the aftermath. The way that the Orlando community has come together to donate blood and support the families of the victims has been incredible. Much as there is so much evil in the world, I truly believe it is trumped by far more good.

I didn't want to bring my sadness and gloom to your trip report but now that you've mentioned these horrible acts, I'll just say I'm with you. My heart is so heavy with this. It not that it's more important because it's a place I know so well. It's just that it's even more real. I know and love that city, I know and love it's people and the joy my family experiences there are some of my fondest memories. It almost makes me wish we were there now.. to give some real hugs, to stand with the city that's been such a source of joy to us. I've been in those hospitals with my son, I can picture those streets. It's all so terribly sad. I haven't found my bounce back cheeriness yet. It's all so senseless. But I will.. because like you said, I have to believe there is more good out there ...more love than hate.

Big heavy sigh.:grouphug:

Now, I'm loving the trip report Gina and I'm reading along... the kids and I am thinking we absolutely have to make time for Congo River on this trip. We enjoy mini golf (though not with the dedication your family shows lol) but we always seem to end up at the Universal courses. And while they are fun, there are so many others to check out. My dh and ds did the pirates course on one trip. They seemed to enjoy that one too.

Just got caught up!

Congratulations to Jake, and to you and Steve as well! Love the graduation pictures! :goodvibes

Your Friday sounds perfect! :cloud9: We would like to try the Congo River mini golf someday. Have you seen any Groupons for them? I'll have to check out our Entertainment Book too.

Looking forward to your next installment! ::yes::

I had that same thought.....the whole event just seemed even more of a tragedy because it was in a city known for happy memories. A horribly sad juxtaposition.

I think your family would love, love, LOVE Congo River....definitely give it a try if you can! (and there's one really, really close to Universal too) Try to budget for some gator feeding and even to hold a gator for those in your group that would enjoy the added experience. This list of prices should help give you an idea of cost.

Just got caught up!

Thank you, my friend! It was a proud day indeed :).

I haven't seen any Groupons for Congo River since our May 2015 trip (we snagged one then, but they haven't run that promo since). Lost Caverns (similar to Congo River, and even used to BE a Congo River at one point if I remember correctly) had one not long ago but I'm not sure if its still running either. The Entertainment Book has had a BOGO coupon in past editions but I can't speak for the 2016 book as I didn't purchase one. I bet if you ask on the Budget Board, though, someone would definitely be in the know :thumbsup2.

Saturday, April 30th

The boys were easy to get up and out the door that morning: Jake had long since reminded me (oh, maybe a 100 times or more) that THIS was his most-anticipated day of the trip. Everyone was up at the first beckoning and dressed in our finest Blue Jays fan wear, we were out the door and embarking on our exciting day on the Gulf Coast.

First though, we needed a hearty breakfast. A dear friend had blessed us with a gift card for Sweet Tomatoes so we could give breakfast a whirl for the first time (each of our other visits had been for lunch, and Jake had never been there at all), so we headed up the I-4 to the Kirkman Road location as the Crossroads Sweet Tomatoes doesn’t offer breakfast at all. I will note, too, that the Kirkman Sweet Tomatoes has breakfast only on weekends, so anyone else who is planning on giving it a try, be sure to keep that in mind.

It was DEAD in there that morning. Are we sure it was 9 am on a Saturday? Considering we were on a schedule, I guess it was a good thing in a way…..we had no wait to be seated or served.

You have your choice of one of three different breakfast options, with prices at either $8, $9, or $10 per person depending on what you select.

The guys both chose “The Works” which included a made-to-order omelet and a small portion of meat. I had the “Original with Beverage” since I wasn’t interested in an omelet (the eggs on the buffet would suffice for moi). The girl checking us in was new and had a huge amount of difficulty with our purchase and gift card, so the other woman training her gave the guys their “Works” upgrade for free. I thought that was a nice gesture
.

We were invited to visit the buffet while the chef set to work on the custom omelet creations for the boys
. The salad bar (which you would normally find at lunch and dinner) was fully stocked and could be accessed as part of the breakfast buffet for those who wished to have a little greenery with their eggs and French toast. We stuck to the traditional breakfast choices, though…..it was way too early for salad (well, except for Steve….he enjoyed some Caesar salad with his breakky).

There was a great variety of breakfast foods from which to pick. Eggs served in various styles, hash-type creations, warm muffins fresh from the oven, French toast, hot biscuits and gravy, breakfast potatoes, pancakes, and more. The variety was so pleasing that Steve and Jake both ate enough that they were almost regretting their omelette upgrade when those two steaming plates were delivered to our table.

Steve managed to get through his omelette, but Jake couldn’t quite finish all of his.

We grabbed one last quick washroom stop before our road trip commenced, and were on the road enroute to St. Pete’s Beach by about 9:45.

And oh, what a journey that turned out to be.

Our commute to St. Petersburg was a bit of a comedy of errors (though it wasn’t funny at the time, we are laughing about it now
). Getting onto the I4, we managed to take the wrong ramp (and yes, we were using the GPS but still managed to mess up) which necessitated a full turn around where we got stopped at every red light while doubling back. Add 15 minutes there. The distance was MUCH longer than we had estimated, so the buffer zone we had built in vanished as soon as the GPS calculated our arrival time to the boat dock. Then, about half way to the coast, Steve realized that we probably weren’t going to have enough gas in the rental car to confidently get us to St. Pete’s. There was almost war in the car . What? He hadn’t checked the gas gauge the night before? That necessitated a detour to a gas station, and more precious minutes wasted.

I am sure it could have been a lovely drive, but let’s just say the tension overshadowed the beauty of the Florida countryside. We were all well aware that our boat would leave at noon whether we were on it or not, and with each little delay, it was feeling more like “not”. I am rather a worrier by nature and this was killing me. I could have cried when we took yet one final wrong ramp , and Steve literally drove through the grassy median to get us back on course. I spent the next several miles looking behind us, sure that a state trooper would come roaring up with lights a –blazing .

We were supposed to be at the dock 30 minutes before our departure time. We pulled into a parking spot at the plaza with 5 minutes to sailing. We literally ran to the boat dock. Somehow, some way…..we had made it!

The friendly attendant at the ticket kiosk greeted us with a “Yay! You're here!” (could she see that we all looked ready to fall apart by that point?) and told us to go ahead and board the boat. Today, we would be sailing on the Phoenix, and boy, was she pretty.

We passed this girl as we shuffled down the dock, breathing easy for the first time since we left Sweet Tomatoes that morning. Hopefully we would see at least a real one or two very soon!

If we didn’t need a relaxing two-hour sail on the gulf before, we certainly did now .

Our dolphin cruise is next!

Saturday, April 30th: continued

A little background on Dolphin Landings, the company we chose to book our dolphin cruise through: they are currently the number two rated tour out of St. Pete’s Beach on TripAdvisor. They were number one when we purchased our tickets.

https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attracti...harter_Boat_Center-St_Pete_Beach_Florida.html

We had initially planned to book a dolphin cruise at a location a little closer to Tropicana Field, but a close friend of ours (who is a native Floridian) gently nudged us toward Dolphin Landings. Trust me, she said….you will be glad you drove the little bit extra and paid the little bit extra. And Gina, this is on a sailboat….’nuff said .

They do offer several different types of experiences, all of which looked amazing. Ours, of course, was the Dolphin Watch tour.

We booked in advance on their website, using a coupon found online. Hats off to the customer service at this attraction: even though they were very clear at the time of booking that these were a non-refundable tickets, after Sunshine was no longer joining us, I emailed them to let them know (so that we didn't have any awkward questions at the time of arrival) and they fully refunded our fourth ticket with no questions asked. Completely not expected but very, very much appreciated ::yes::.

My boys were beyond happy to be on the boat and ready for the crew to untie the ropes from the dock .

There were about 15-20 guests on the boat and two crew, Captain Glenn and his first mate, Cindy. Cindy, especially, was a real gem: super friendly, wonderfully helpful, and possessing the awesome knack of making each of us feel as if we were her personal special guest. As we boarded, we went immediately to the very empty rear of the boat….why everyone else crammed themselves all up front, I have no idea:confused3 (the view from the stern was amazing!) but we weren’t complaining.

Dolphin Landings itself is located behind a strip mall (the Dolphin Village Shopping Center) which borders the gulf waters. It was so odd to see boats just parked behind a building that looked like it should be smack dab in the middle of an urban centre.

Looking around at the various watercraft docked nearby, I had visions of what our first purchase would be should we happen to win the next Lotto 649 jackpot.

Within literally two minutes of us seating ourselves comfortably at the rear, Captain Glenn fired up the engine and we began our initial departure away from the dock. It was hot, hot, HOT again today…..already hitting the low 90’s and we were still a couple of hours (and several degrees) away from the hottest part of the afternoon :sunny:. The gulf breeze and the partial cloud cover were Godsends! :worship:

Not far from shore, we passed a flyboarder giving it his best. I wondered if the poor guy felt self conscious as our entire boat all watched him intently :scratchin.

It wasn’t long before Captain Glenn cut the engines and he and Cindy expertly raised the sails. It was time to get this party started!

Okay, so about this time, I decided to forgive the big guy for not filling up the car before we went to bed last night…..and he forgave me for misjudging the proper amount of time for the commute. It was too special of a time to ruin the mood by staying mad.

With the sails up and the boat effortlessly whipping along the water, Cindy came back and offered to take a family picture for us. Pardon the hair, it was WINDY on the water! :crazy2:

Everyone was welcome and encouraged to sit or stand wherever they felt most comfortable…..the crew was super relaxed and easy-going. Our cruise was just barely underway and Steve was already giving this attraction a big thumbs-up.

Oh, that view :cloud9::

There was a small regatta happening in St. Pete’s Beach that Saturday, so Glenn took us by the boats for an up-close look…..what a colourful sight with all the varied sails. Pretty much every single boater paused to offer us a big, friendly wave, too……gotta love that southern hospitality :goodvibes.

Glenn steered us onward while Cindy handed out complimentary beverages (Coke products and bottled water) to all guests. You could also BYOB on this cruise as well, if you wanted, though only one or two did so that early in the day .

The shoreline is lined with homes and condo developments. Judging from the number of boats we saw along our tour, it appears that owning a boat is a requirement for all residents of St. Petersburg. There were hundreds of them.

Off in the distance we spotted a huge bridge, and as Captain Glenn navigated the boat toward it, he noted that the Fantasea (Dolphin’s Landings second sailing vessel currently on the water, which had departed just a short time before we had) had received reports of dolphin activity in the waters on the other side .

With cold beverages in hand, the breeze whipping through our hair, and the warm sun (intermittently) on our faces, the whole boat was literally teeming with anticipation as we passed beneath the arch.

Everyone was praying that we’d see a real, live dolphin. I mean, the cruise itself was ah-mazing, but a dolphin sighting would just put this whole experience over the top .

The balance of our cruise is next.

I hate being late. So glad you still let you on the boat. That's why I wish we had a compass in the rental cars. I have a bad habit of using my car's all the time. For some reason, I always feel like I am going north when I am really going south in Florida. Beautiful pictures.

I think our rental had a compass in it....like you, I find it hard to "feel" the direction. All those palm trees just mesmerize me and I'm easily lost :teeth:.

Those 4 boat excursions all sound amazing! I may have to make a trip there someday

Absolutely, positively worth the money :thumbsup2. Steve and I hope to return for the sunset cruise someday. We also get some sort of discount for life.....they gave us a card that entitles us for a perpetual percentage savings on any future trips (10 or 15% I think?), to be used as often as we want for as long as the company operates.

Ok I need to know, is there a bathroom on that boat?

Can't wait to find out if you see a dolphin!

Yes ma'am, there is a bathroom on board! :) This girl with a tiny bladder would never consider two hours on the water without that feature :p.

I just have to thank you Gina for this trip report. I can't seem to get out of my down mood since the tragedy struck in Orlando. We were still in Orlando when this occurred so our trip ended on a big downer. Just as @pigletto said, this city brings our family so much joy- it's just breaking our hearts to see this. Reading your report has helped-THX!!! and I absolutely LOVE @dancin Disney style's words of wisdom of the day.

@dancin'- you need to keep this going- I look forward to them!:teeth:

Look at that water:cloud9:. I would love to be there right now. Can't wait to see your dolphin pictures!!

I was feeling anxious for you as you described the trip there. We've had a few of those days ourselves. I'm glad you made it in time:sunny:

I hope you saw dolphins! I almost did this cruise on my last trip but booked one out of John's Pass instead. I wasn't sure if a sailboat would be too crowded or a lot more rocky than the traditional flat dolphin cruise boats. From your pics, it looks like it wasn't too crowded. How smooth was the ride? Also, not sure what kind of coupon you found on-line but if you have an Entertainment.com membership, they have a buy 1, get 1 free coupon for Dolphin Landings (I think there's one for the regular dolphin cruise and one for the sunset cruise). I find the Entertainment membership is a great deal depending on what you're doing on vacation (ie. I paid $24 for mine and there was a 25% off coupon for Wild Florida that saved me $24 so with just one coupon, the membership was paid for. Plus there's lots of B1G1 coupons for mini golf, restaurants etc. Might be worth checking out if you haven't already).

That's awesome! I need to check that out

I'm a little late to this party but was happy to find another one of your TR's! I love Sweet Tomatos...always go in South Florida when we are there too - had no idea they had breakfast...I wonder if those ones do too..will have to check it out next time!! That cruise looked like a lot of fun!

I didn't want to bring my sadness and gloom to your trip report but now that you've mentioned these horrible acts, I'll just say I'm with you. My heart is so heavy with this. Same feelings here. Orlando feels like my second home. I couldn't feel much worse if it happened in Toronto.
