Oh No! My dog has swine flu!!!

Whether its coming from a general practioner or a vet, there is still no evidence, or confirmation that H1N1 is being transmitted too/from dogs and cats. However there has been 1 confirmed H1N1 case in a ferret according to the AVMA.
I think that any doctor (MD or DVM) telling people this kind of stuff, without data and evidence backing it up, do absolutely nothing for controlling irrational public panic about this virus.
While it may be coincidental that her cat got sick, or it may be that the virus has in fact mutated and is now transmissable to felines, but how is it she can be 100% sure that she gave it to her cat, did she have it tested?

OP, didn't mean to go OT. I thought your joke was funny :)

I've no clue. It was not the GP who stated it. That would be my step mom. It was the Public Health doctor. If he is inappropriate, it really isn't my problem. Just passing along information that came from a supposedly reliable source.

I understand, and I'm not trying to offend you. I'm just trying to let anyone who reads this and thinks that they may be able to catch or give H1N1 to their dog or cat know that right now there is nothing that proves that its possible.:flower3:

I lost my cocker spaniel Lucky, to canine influenza, I don't think this is funny, at all. I guess I don't have a good sense of humor.

My dog has been sneezing & is extra sleepy etc, so when I read the subject line I did get a little "oh no!" but I was relieved to find that it's just a joke =)

I didn't laugh, but I'm not offended. I guess because I was already concerned over my dog's health, it might've jaded my view ^_^; (that and I literally JUST came from the thread about children with H1N1, so yeah LOL)

I'm so sorry about your doggy. That's really sad.

Did this happen recently? I did hear one report that there is a type of canine influenza this year, but I'm not sure if was a swine-flu type or something else.

Thank you for your kind thoughts, my dog was only sick for four days before he died, it hit him very hard. He was at the vet's office every one of those four days, getting medicine and it didn't help. He was my first pet, and it is still hard he was only six. I guess I am overly sensitive to this subject, I want people to laugh, this one just hit to close to home for me.

Sorry about your dog. I was just at my vet a few mts ago and they had these brochures at check out. They are titled Canine Influenza. I'll just briefly say that it says it is currently in 30 states. It is a newly emerging infectious disease. In dogs, a highly contagious strain of the influenza A virus known as H3N8 is able to cause respitory illness. This influenza only affects dogs. Also, virtually every dog exposed will become infected. Only about 80% show signs of infection.

no, but it does sound like your trying to start something over nothing.... that is what this dis board has turned a lot into.

Not at all!

Just addressing what was said about me, I did not give anyone an attitude. Just expressing my opinion much like you did. Which, by the way was between myself and someone else and we are fine, but I thank you for your concern.

I thought it was funny.

Anything said can be offensive to some people, and I think if you're offended, the best thing to do is  and move on. It will spare you aggravation, sadness, or any other unpleasant emotion. I'm not being snarky. I just know this works for me while allowing others the freedom to laugh over anything they want.

My dog doesn't have swine flu, but my cat sure must! The little piggy weighs 23 pounds now. He got locked in the pantry and ate anything he could reach - inlcuding uncooked noodles, cookies, Cheetos, and half of a box of cake mix.

I'm sorry about your puppy. We just put our 16 y/o chow mix to sleep a few months ago. I still expect to see her in the window when we get home every night. :grouphug:

I'm very sorry for your loss, but I don't think what I posted related to that in any way. Again though, I'm sorry you lost your pet.

It's a serious case.
