My DD13 just came home from a sleepover early because she felt "really crappy". I took her temp, it was 99. She was complaining of aches all over and that the back ofher throat hurt and "feels wierd when I breathe". Gave her some OTC flu meds, took her temp again and it was 99.7.

I truly hope that this is just a case of overtired because she was at the sleepover... if it seems as though it IS the flu it's going to ruin us financially because I will take her to the dr, but she has no insurance.

Sorry to add to the multitude of flu vents; just had to let it out somewhere!

That really stinks! I am sorry to hear that. Not that it helps now, but can you look into programs for insuring your daughter?

Does your state offer chip? Income standards are very high.....my friends pay 40$ per month for insurance (I think all kids are covered in PA, if you apply) and has no co-pays.

That is cheaper than the cost to go to the Dr.

Something to look into it.

I have insurance, but if (and when) my kids get the flu, I don't think I'll take them in - I'm not sure about tamiflu. Hope she feels better! Maybe she's just tired - anything under 100 is not considered a fever in children.

AAbsolutely. If she's having breathing trouble (not a sore throat, but difficulty breathing), of course take her in. For a fever (which technically under 100 degrees, she doesn't HAVE a fever), no need to go to dr.

I hope she feels better soon. I would NOT think it's being tired from a sleepover. She knows she feels ill, it sounds like. My teenage dd is sick in bed right now.

I HOPE this was it for us, for flu this year. I don't want to go through a month of one family member at a time being sick, again!

Yes, exactly. Up to 30% of H1N1 patients don't have fever at all, but any complaint invovling breathing should be taken seriously.

Can you go to an urgent care center, or the Health Department? Don't be shy to say your DD isn't insured and what kind of financial payment plan can they offer you. Most places (dr's offices, and certainly the helath dept.) are going to have policy in place to help people in exactly your situation. You're FAR from the only one.

If she's still saying it feels weird when she breathes, I'd take her somewhere today. And I hope she is fine soon, too.

I feel your pain, my kids don't have ins. either, because I make $5 over the limit for state coverage and it's $300 a month to add them to my employers ins. plan....I've taken my girls in when they've been sick and I'm trying to get their "Father" to either add them to his state ins. or send me more $$ but neither one is working so far.....I hope your DD is better soon, watch her carefully, the remark about her throat feeling funny is what would worry me. And yes, if/when my girls get sick I will take them in, I just have to pay oop for it....

Well, the doctor says yep, she has the flu but nope, don't bring her in. She's sleeping a ton, temp's kept down with Tylenol, and she's sipping water. So dr says we're doing everything right and just to keep an eye on her,a nd keep her away from people for a few days and to call if she gets worse.
