well fellow Discampers, this has been quite the week!! I just felt a need to share, get it out, off my shoulders and let it go...( oops, sorry for the song now stuck in your head :rolleyes1)

Saturday brought us some difficulties! My DS 15 broke his leg and tore his ACL and we are now waiting for an appointment to discuss surgery :sad2:

Then....
Living in the great white north has a lot of advantages and I LOVE  living here BUT when it is May 6 and it snows 10cm!! Come on Mother Nature!!:mic: We need to have a word!!

So here we are 54 days out, broken :crutches:and cold!!
Although I suppose it could be worse! At least we have something to look forward to! Wish my boy a speedy recovery, I sure would hate for him to have to miss out on so much during our first trip to the Fort and to Disney World!

Phew! Ok, now that's off my shoulders, back to reading, researching and planning:surfweb::coffee:

Thanks for listening! :disrocks:

Yikes, so sorry for your son and hope he heals well and is 'fit' for your trip 100%!

About the snow and cold - being a deep south girl, and having a yard full of flowers (and hard work) for the last month or so, I cannot comprehend what you are going through, and honestly don't want to find out personally, LOL.

Stay warm, and the Fort awaits you with heat and sunshine!! :thumbsup2 :goodvibes

So so sorry about your son's accident. Perhaps surgery will be a more speedy recovery. Here in southwest Wisconsin, it is almost 80 degrees today. Yes, finally. hope this reaches you soon. Blessings, and keep your chin up.

Depending on his fracture, at least 6 weeks in a cast or walking boot?

The ACL will probably leave him in a knee immobilizer. You might just skirt this trip if all goes well and be able to have him walking but it will be close.

Thanks North of Mouse!! And you are right, yard work is HARD work! Like I said, there are some advantages to living in a land of snow!! Haha, our growing season is usually June-end of September and if we are lucky we will make it to thanksgiving (ours not yours October 14ish). But by then we are full swing into hockey so nobody has time for gardens or flowers at that point!!

Thank you bjschill!! We have our fingers crossed and he has a great attitude about it all so that should help with the healing!!

80 degrees!! :cool2: oh how I wish!! Right now we are at 27 degrees!! Should warm up today to about 50!!! :guilty:

These are exactly the conversations we have been having Tiggerdad! It definitely is cutting close! I just hope he is able to get onto most rides. The ones where you really have to bend your knee to get in are probably out ie. Space Mountain but I figure, what better place to do physio than DisneyWorld!!!
We have rented a golf cart at the Fort to so that will help immensely! Not looking forward to possibly pushing a wheel chair around though....but fingers crossed!
He goes to the paediatric orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday. :magnify:

Keep your fingers crossed, but 6 weeks is a long time for a 15 year old. I have broken a lot of things. Most when I was young. Unless it is a really nasty break, 6 weeks is about what it takes to heal. Hopefully his ACL just needs an immobilizer, but even getting it scoped and repaired, 6 weeks is a good amount of time for a youngster to heal.

My team mate "exploded" (Drs words) his knee playing golf (Yes we still tease him) 2 weeks before we were all going to Disney. He couldn't walk on it, no weight at all, it was so bad. Had it reconstructed the next day. We all went to WDW and he did OK. He had a brace, but got a scooter most days so it wouldn't swell up by evening. He did pretty well transferring onto rides, even Space Mt. And he was an old guy at the time (40s).

1) Yeow!
2) We wish you good fortune.
3) Even with the breaks, he should enjoy WDW.
4) Sure, can't do all the rides, but with a ECV (aka, "scooter") he can get around and enjoy the rest of the atmosphere.
5) Best of luck with your decision to go or stay home.

Prayers coming your way for a speedy recovery. Knowing he is going to Fort Wilderness, will help your Son heal quickly.
Good luck & be safe!!

Thank you for the message!! I truly hadn't thought about the time line objectively in terms of healing and you are so right! 6 weeks is a lot of healing time for a 15 year old!!
And thanks for sharing about your buddy! That really puts my mind at ease. (And yes,Us oldies tend to heal a lot slower!:snail:)Someone else mentioned a scooter and it's not something I thought of until then. I was thinking wheel chair but a scooter would be so much more fun for a 15 year old boy!! It's just making sure he doesn't crash that too! :upsidedow

Thanks RustyScupper!
1) I know! :scared:
2) very much appreciated :flower3:
3)oh he definitely will - it's me being an overprotective mama! :charac2:
4)Great idea!!! He would love that! As long as he doesn't crash that too!!ha! :moped:
5) ohhhhh, no decision to make! We ARE going!! :yay:

Lovers2000,

One word on the scooters, the ones you can rent in the parks, are first come, first serve. This is what my friend did each day with his knee problem. There were 2 days there weren't any available when we arrived late morning. We would check back every hour or so and generally had one pretty quickly. The in park scooters are also expensive. Some have suggested renting from an off site vendor for the week to assure you have one, but also to save considerable $$.

Hopefully you have a diagnosis and treatment plan by now and things are going well. Doesn't hurt to have Plan A, B and C lined up just in case.

BTW, I'm a health care professional that works in hospital administration for a VERY large "perioperative services". That is the operating rooms and all the ancillary support areas connected to them. The surgery options and patient management is what I deal with everyday.

Well friends! We went to the orthopedic surgeon. Her report wasn't as hopeful as I would have liked but it is what it is!
It is still broken and the bone inside is jagged which isn't good. If it doesn't round out or soften they will take it out surgically. There is too much swelling still to see if his ACL is in tact so she ordered 3 weeks of physiotherapy to mobilize it and bring the swelling down so they can figure out the ACL issue. If that doesn't work, an MRI will be ordered. So, some positives, she said he will be walking for our trip! Albeit slow:snail:...she said young kids tend to heal quickly:)
BUT his main concern isn't Disney or summer holidays....it's hockey....she said she isn't sure he will be ready to play in August :sad2: We didn't tell him this :ssst:, it would have broken his heart . I hope I don't have to tell him that!!:guilty:

Sooooooo looking forward to the Fort!!! Need some down time from the craziness of this life! :flower:

Thanks for the message and advice!! I think I will look into an off site one today! I'm sure if I search it, there will be thread on the Dis somewhere! :)

Yes! With 2-15 year old boys, we have spent MANY hours at the hospital!! This is the worst one yet so I am super lucky!! I am also very lucky and thankful to live near Edmonton where there is a phenomenal children's hospital!! They are so super fantastic there that it kills me to know that in 2 years they will be too old for it! That said we have the UofA hospital for adults and that is a #1 facility too!!

Thank you for all you do in the health care industry! It is a thankless job but so appreciated by those of us who utilize it far too often!

Probably not the best diagnosis you wanted, but still not terrible for the WDW trip. I have peers at SickKids (for the non-Canucks, that's really what they go by) in Toronto and a good racing friend that is a vascular surgeon that used to practice at Stollery. Stollery (if that's where you're going)(and SickKids) has a great reputation.

Hockey may be out for a while... He could always try a real sport, like baseball! :duck:But then again, I live outside St Louis. We have the Blues that can never seem to make it out of the 1st round of playoffs despite winning the division and the Cardinals who are nearly always a championship contender. Who would you favor?

And :thanks: for the healthcare comments. I'm an RN by training, but have been in administration for a long time. Some days are thankless, but the rewards make it all worthwhile.
