Something stinks in my house and I can't find the source! I keep asking the kids if they have gas and they keep saying no. I'm eyeballing the cat right now wondering if he has gas or has decided to poop somewhere, but that isn't something he has ever done. Then I'm looking underneath things to see if something is rotting or dead! It's making me crazy, does anyone have any ideas what it could be? The stink comes and goes, but when it comes boy does it stink!!!!

Maybe ate something, other than the dining room table and dropped something?

Maybe something crawled in the wall and died?

Check the pan under the refrigerator.

I don't know this from experience rather then from what I read a while ago in another post. Could it be a dead mouse? I heard that is a very bad smell.
Though if you have a cat I would imagine the cat would be playing with the dead mouse. Thats the only thing I can think of. Oh or maybe a back up in your septic system.

Natual gas leak?

Animal that got inside wall and died?

Good luck!

Anne

Take all the garbage outside. There could be something in the bag that smells??

Is it in a particular room of the house?

don't just look under - look up! Once my grandma took something out of freezer (meat, I think!!) to rearrange stuff - and left it on top of freezer - it actually took her days of looking around to realize what it was!!!! She was so sure it had to be a dead mouse or something!!!! Good luck!

I did get a chuckle out of blaming the kids and eyeing the cat...our cats always take the blame first!!!!

:wizard:

Can you narrow it down to a room? We had a bad smell in the kitchen and bathroom and it turned out to be an old birds nest in the vents.

Do you have a sink/tub that hasn't been used in a long time? One time we had an awful smell in our house just like you described and it was a drain that had gone "dry". I think I'm describing this correctly... if the water dries up in the drain pipe an odor can come through the pipes. Once we ran water through it the smell went away. Now I make sure that water is run through all our pipes frequently.

Check your garbage disposal. I have had bad smells come from their before. I would also run water in all of your sinks. A dead mouse in the walls will really stink up the place, and the smell coming and going could just be you getting used to it, leaving the room and coming back.

:teeth: Did you find all the eggs at Easter :lmao:

Did someone spill milk on the carpet and not clean it up? We have had that happen and it smells horrible

:cool1: cute puppy.......I would check the drains and run water in them all this happens in our basement, we have a shower and when the dehumidifer runs to much it drys out the seals. good luck!

I have had my cats leave dead mice under the furniture, or even buried deep in the couch (esp. if it is a pull-out couch). They smell HORRIBLE! The cat will play with the mouse until it runs to hide where the cat can't get at it, and then it dies from its injuries. If there is nothing under the furniture, try taking all the cushions out & pulling out sofas & turning recliners upside down. Look behind all the kitchen appliances. Think of all the places the cat might not be able to reach where a mouse might want to hide. Those little suckers are creative hiders!

Dead rabbits don't smell too great either.

I had a dead mouse in the wall once. It was STINK-O-RAMA for a few days there.

Good luck IDing your stink! :)

My sister had a bird climb into her dryer vent from outside and lay eggs. They died in there.

We had a small pond in our garden at our old house. We found a dead bird in there once, and also a dead mouse.

Good luck, let us know what it is.

This makes me think of the email that was posted a few days ago about the woman stuffing shrimp into the curtain rods before she moved out and left the house to her ex-husband. :teeth:

If the smell comes and goes maybe something got into your heating/air duct work or into the returns. Check your attic and basement/crawlspace for the smell too.

My first thought was potatoes too. Rotting spuds sure do smell awful. I had rotten potatoes one time, it took me a couple of days to figure out what the offender was. I moved the stove, the fridge, cleaned out the fridge, cleaned out the garbages, still there, FINALLY i checked the cupboard and sure enough, potato stench. EWWWWW. I haven't brought potatoes into our house since!

Could there be food left in the microwave? This happened to us once. There was a horrible smell in our kitchen. I cleaned the sink, garbage disposal, garbage can, dishwasher...everything. It still smelled. We were ready to tear apart the plumping. Finally we opened the microwave to make popcorn, and found a dish of rotting cooked fresh broccoli. We had forgotten to serve it at dinner several days before. Yuck!
