OGT Rate Question

Hello,

My family and I are thinking about a last minute vacation on the Disney Magic and had a question about booking an OGT (Oceanview with Restrictions) room. I see that a lot of Oceanview rooms on Deck 2 currently show as available to book under the normal rate. Does this mean that we are more likely be assigned to one of these rooms?

We would love to stay on Deck 2. I am honestly surprised that no rooms on Deck 1 show as available. Does Disney “hide” these rooms from booking last minute (are we likely to be assigned to one of these rooms?), or are they truly booked up? I would appreciate your insights.

Thank you!

While it may be more likely you really cannot rely on that. You're basically taking your chances with whatever DCL assigns you. Having said that I've sailed VGT several times and been quite happy with the assignment. Go into this being willing to take the worst cabin and you'll have a good cruise.

DCL doesn’t show all the available cabins on their website. I know this because we have been assigned VGT cabins several times that never showed as available for booking. Cabins on deck 8 and 9 that showed zero cabins available! It really is just luck of the draw!

If booking OGT (or any GTY rate) do not assume it will be one of the rooms showing on the website. If you are perfectly fine with any OGT room- the discount is awesome but if you would be unhappy with a deck 1 or a stateroom with two of the smaller portholes I would skip it.

I love Restricted GTY rates. Only had a bad room once and have done at least 13 Restricted GTY rates since 2022

We’ve probably done 10 VGT/OGT rates on the fantasy since sailing resumed in 2021 - had to cancel a couple when we caught covid. Only one bad cabin - over the tube! Once we hit platinum, we have only been assigned deluxe family cabins - love all the extra space for the 2 of us.

We had the same on the Dream- a room over Evolution. Hated the noise. We have not been lucky enough to get family rooms often but still most of them have been perfectly fine

I’ve received an upgrade on my second cruise as silver. But have booked 5 IGT’s since I was platinum and did not specifically receive a nicer room. I don’t think your status matters (unfortunately).

Thank you all for your input.

Do you all know when OGT rooms are assigned, and whether it possible to upgrade at the port? Are there any strategies for this? (Be the first one at the port?)

Yes it can be possible to upgrade at port- Be aware that the sliding scale will assume that you were the lowest ocean-view room even if you were assigned a higher category room. Upgrades costs are calculated based on the room category you are currently in (or for OGT lowest oceanview room you could have been assigned) and the category of room you are moving to.

An early PAT can help, taking DCL transportation often ensures an early PAT time. Not all cruises will have upgrades available at port so do not count on it.

I suggest checking out the VGT, OGT, IGT thread to have a better idea as to when your room will be assigned. Most of the time it is 15-8 days prior to sailing but I did have a cruise where I was given my room 2 days prior to sailing.

We sailed VGT on the fantasy 4 weeks last year. The first 2 cruises, our cabin was assigned at day 8. The most recent 2 cruises, it was assigned around day 14.

We have seen no upgrades available on the fantasy since late 2022. These were all 7 night cruises, so it may be different with the shorter cruises the fantasy now sails.

I was on Deck 1 once on the Magic. Thought I would hate it. But I LOVED it! It was so quiet. Easy to catch an empty elevator and usually the ramp out to port stops. Just the two little portholes. They offered to change me to Deck 2 but that cabin caught a ton of noise from the theater. I don't think it was from the lounge as it was mid afternoon? Anyway, I'm a fan of the lower decks.
