I had my mind made up for the HOJO because somewhere I remember reading it is the closest offsite hotel judging by steps to the main gate. I can't remember where I read this but now I see that this is not correct. We have never stayed offsite before. We are looking for a moderate that is clean and the shortest walking distance to park entrances. We don't need a free breakfast. Any recommendations? What is the closest moderate?

The Tropicana is where I have stayed. The Best Western next door to it is technically closer, but only by maybe 10 steps. I was pleased with The Tropicana and will be staying there for any future visits.

As far as steps to the main gates, Park Vue Inn ("PVI") is the closest. You cross the street in front of the hotel, and you are walking through the pedestrian entrance of Disneyland.

I'm a huge PVI fan. It's clean. It's close. I've never paid more than $220 (for a suite even!). Beds are soooo comfortable. Customer service is great. Recently renovated rooms. Did I mention it's close?! Wifi signal is pretty good there too. Pool is clean and clear, and doesn't stink of bromine or chlorine (a pool maintenance man once told me that a pool shouldn't smell chemical or the chemicals aren't in the correct ratios, so I've just always used this as my criteria).

Though you said it's not important to you, they do have a free hot breakfast each day. It's nothing super-special, but it's more than most places have.

Beyond Park Vue Inn, in order to the north: Best Western Park Place Inn, Tropicana, Camelot; to the south, Desert Inn and Suites, Del Sol, and Ramada (can't remember beyond those).

Also the Del Sol Inn between Desert Inn and Ramada.

What do you consider "moderate"? The places on Harbor across from the shuttle stop are motels. There are some that are definitely nicer than the lower end motels you can find farther away, but they're motels. HoJos is not a long walk, it's basically a block and a half. You can drop a pin in the esplanade on Google maps and map walking directions to judge the distance.

Don't you have to go to the stoplight in front of Best Western Park Place Inn to cross the street? Anyone know how to get a discount on Park Vue? I looked at their website but didn't see any place to enter AAA or anything like that.

Give them a call for a lower rate. Stop light is actually in front of Park Vue. If you want to get really technical, there's actually a crosswalk (north-south) between Park Place Inn and Park Vue Inn, before being able to cross the east-west crosswalk.

Thanks for the link...I stayed at Best Western last year and thought the stop light was almost directly in front of it but not sure.

I'm going to echo SMD -- what's your definition of moderate? I wouldn't consider those motels moderate. Moderate to me would be more like the new Marriott which is pretty close although I thought it was too far of a walk for me and it is right next to HOJO's. I'm by no means a distance expert because I'm an onsite girl but I think there are also a few newer Hotels that would be right in that area. I guess it depends on if you want "closeness" or "moderate".

I have 4 more stays booked for the Tropicana this year. I love the 5 night 20% discount. I love Pizza Press. The staff is terrific. The rooms are spacious and easy to navigate. I find them larger than Candy Cane Inn but that might just be that the furniture is not as big (ie not a huge TV cabinet).

I don't mind the valet parking - they were friendly but it's a bit annoying to a) have to wait for your car and b) tip each time. Now that $10/day parking is closer to $15.

The pool and hot tub are passable. They do the job. Not resort-like but I don't find I have a lot of time to lounge around during my afternoon breaks. It's a quick dip followed by a nap. :)

The location is awesome. I mean, literally 10 steps further than the others there - it's not noticeably further.

I think the only ones across the street I would consider "moderate" are Fairfield Inn and the new Courtyard. The rest are really budget motels. However, they are just fine! I've stayed at Tropicana, Park Vue, HoJo's and Ramada (now Grand Legacy) and all were fine.

I've also stayed at Desert Inn, but didn't like it at all and would consider it the worst of all the ones across the street.

Our personal favorite is the Candy cane inn. Its walking distance, but they have their own shuttle that runs every 1/2 hour. The rooms are a bit small, but clean and comfortable. We don't tend to spend much time in our room. The breakfast is adequate to get the day started.

In the last few years we've stayed at the BW park place inn, the park Vue and the Candy cane. The CCI is the one we always seem to return to. We use the others if the CCI is unavailable or if one of the others has a screaming hot deal.

We were really unimpressed with the breakfast at the BWPPI. And the pool location leaves a little to be desired. Staff was fine, and the room was decent. I don't recall using the pool at the Park Vue. The staff was friendly and the room was ok, but seemed a bit dark ( pre-remodel).

Actually it used to be correct - but now the new Marriott is a bit closer - the reason it is accurate is it is the closest HOTEL - the rest are all motels.

I have had great visits at the Camelot and Desert Inn & Suites. Those are really the one two I consider now.

Add another recommendation for the Tropicana. WE've stayed there 3x,and have had good experiences each time. It's clean, comfortable...it's nothing to write home about, but it's a nice place to sleep. Breakfast isn't included, but mcdonald's is an easy walk as is The Cove convenience store they have in the hotel itself (they have a little coffee shop, sundries, some breakfast items, etc.

I'd stay away from the Candy Cane Inn. We recently had a horrible stay there. Do a search within the forum to get the thread if your interested in it.
