Officially an Obama Supporter Now.....

Was at dinner, so only caught the question on homosexuality, which my husband kindly rewound for me on the ol' DVR. I agree that Palin's use of "tolerance" 17 times was a bit weird. What I don't understand is, if they're both against gay marriage, but for visitation rights, property rights, etc., how do they propose couples would get these rights, if they aren't married? Would the couple have to enter into some sort of a legal contract, like someone else mentioned? Can someone please explain that to me better?

I'm sharing the fence with some of you, but I'm trying to avoid candidates that would advocate banning gay marriage altogether (which is why I'll be voting against Florida's Amendment 2 here shortly). Any thoughts? Thanks!

I live in MA where we allow gays to marry, thank God.
But, here is that big but, we did not vote for it. Conservatives here freak out because we were not allowed to vote it in or not. They are counting on the not; I say who cares, it is here and I am glad that it is.

I did not like the word tolerance either.. it was uncomfortable sounding.

As a gay couple, you can go to a lawyer and get all kinds of legal contracts written up. It can be costly, and God forbid something happens, a family member can contest said contracts and it can get real messy. Meanwhile, your partner is sitting in the hospital all alone! NOT FUN, and yes it happens!

Compared to a hetero couple...one quick trip to Vegas and Poof! You are legally married with all of the rights and privileges provided!

Seperate does not always mean equal!

The difference is that Obama/Biden ticket is in favor of same-sex rights being granted through states allowing couples to register as domestic partners or civil unions. Basically granting all the same rights, but avoiding the term "marriage." A 'seperate but equal" sort of thing, though in actual practice it doesn't always work and is rarely really "equal." But it is a start that would likely lead to full marriage in the future.

Palin, on the other hand, is opposed to any sort of state recognition of same sex rights, but favors having same sex couples jump through hoops, with complicated and expensive civil contracts that could be ignored or contested by biological families, hospitals, etc. Potentially having a partner involved in expensive litigation for years to claim an inheritence or the right to make final decisions for their life partner. Remember the Terri Schiavo case, where the husband wanted to disconnect the machines, but her parents wanted her kept on life support? Palin's view potentially subjects each and every gay couple to that scenario. Having to go to an expensive court case to make those decisions, if the biological family objects.

When my DP was hospitalized for a week last year, one of the nurses refused to let me in to see him at all when I got there (it was outside normal visitation hours) because I wasn't related. Finally one of the doctors said "you're his son, right?" (there's about 12 years between us), so I agreed and they let us in.

We had been together for 6 years already at this point. It just gets me mad that a straight couple, even unmarried, wouldn't have been questioned.

For me, the word "tolerence" (in whatever form, like 'tolerate' or 'tolerant' etc.) has a negative tone to it. For example, I "tolerated" 90 minutes in the dentist chair earlier this week. If you come to WDW at this time of year, you really need to be "tolerant" of the love bugs. You just have to put up with them because there's no way to avoid them. That doesn't mean that you respect them or won't swat the heck out of them if they get too close.

To quote singer Amy Ray "Tolerance, it ain't acceptance."

You just based your choice for President on a typically inconsequential VP candidate? Scary.

My entire decision was not based on the VP debate at all. In this election, like no other that I have been eligible to vote in before, the VP choice is one that has needed to be more closely scrutinized, due in part to McCain's age & Obama's lack of time in politics. Also, with Cheney extending the powers of the VP outside of the norm, it has been a bit scary....honestly, I want to make sure that whoever takes on the VP doesn't continue to want to expand the position. There are boundries on the job duties for a reason!

I have grown increasingly disgusted with the republican party over the Bush years. I don't think that McCain is the right man for the job ahead. I find Palin narrowminded, in experienced, and snarky in a bad way. In the case of Obama, he isn't politics as usual. He needs a VP with some good experience and lots of pull. Biden supplies that and will be a good resource for Obama. If God forbid, something were to happen to Obama, Biden would make a good presidential choice. IMO

We just did this and let me say the trip to Vegas would have been easier and much more fun!!!! However we are both in our 30's now and need to have things in place if anything should ever happen. We really hope with these documents our families will respect our wishes but you never know! It is scary!

And this argument has now hit the CB! God help me! ;)

Thanks for the explanations. I'm wondering now if I should investigate some of the other candidates, since right now neither the Repubs nor the Dems hold much appeal for me. I know some people would say that it's "throwing your vote away," but I'd rather feel morally comfortable with my choice, y'know?

And I'm really glad I chose to ask my question over here rather than...*delicately*...anywhere else. :)

Well one other little thing-
It might have been nice if she actually answered a few more of the question that she was asked

But I guess that doesn't matter to "Joe six pack".

Not 100% sure she knew what an Achilles heel is...

You know what? I like Palin. Even though her views are totally different than mine, I can see us having a chat over cofee. Do I like her enough to be my VP? He!! no!! I have to go with Biden on this one, I think he's more prepared for the job.
Besides, she even says "nucular"... so no change there. :lmao:

Amen Sister...Nucular drives me up the wall as does Eye-rak and EYE-ran. I guess that sorta calls my red-neck cred into question but my club-card's been revoked anyway... :confused3

I wanted Hillary. Since that option was eliminated, I will go with Obama.

Palin makes me want to puke. She tries to be all folksy, like she is just like me. Um, NO, she is NOTHING like me. I love my friends, I don't "tolerate" them.:sad2: Don't wink at me, enunciate your words properly, and answer the questions. She drops the "g" from every word that ends in "ing" which drives me batty. I prefer world leaders to leave the twang at home. But she is also a zealot. Twangy zealots need not apply, thanks.

Obama may not have decades of experience, but he isn't going to be in charge all by himself. His beliefs are much closer to mine than the Republicans, so Obama it is! :)

And whats with people that say...

WAR shinton!

There is no R in Washington!

:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Ha! Ha! We ditch the r's in eveything else here in MA Mike.... We need to put them back somewhere! Might as well be with our war-mongering presidink.

When I hear Maverick I think of a Roller Coaster at Cedar Point that didn't run correctly the first six months of operation! :lmao:

When I hear Maverick I keep thinking of Maverick and Goose........top gun........hehe oh and Ice Man!
maybe Palin can be Ice Man and Mc Cain is Maverick.
coming soon to a theatre near you!

I agree she didn't answer anything, and she kept changing the subject

oh and did anyone else's head start to spin when she talked about global warming, and oil consumption??? does she even know the cause of any of the global climate issues!
