I don't think it really matters. I have both and I haven't played the second one yet, but I can't imagine playing the second one without the first is that big of a deal.
I would suggest everyone play the first one first, if they can, but I wouldn't return the 2nd one if that's what you got.
Most (if not all of the reviews) here are for 1 because it's been out longer and no one has played 2 cuz we're saving it for christmas.
As mentioned, I haven't seen either Rayman or Rayman II, but from the "expert" reviews I've seen, it seems that the original has a better review because it involves a storyline? Something about getting Rayman from one point to another throught the mini-games and that it's fun as a single player game as well as a group game.
The knock on the Rayman II that I've seen is that the storyline is gone and it's just a bunch of mini-games that are super for parties/multiplayer gaming, but not enjoyable/boring as a single player game. Since I bought it for the multiplayer gaming, I think I'll keep it.
