Official Thread For Upcoming Eastern Canadian Cruises

Thanks for the walk time info! Sounds like a very walk-friendly city. Come to think of it, sounds like a very friendly city period!
:goodvibes

Could you tell me how long the walk would be from the ship to the Citadel? Is it all up hill or could you take a detour or a break along the way?

THANK YOU!! Great info from you all (especially appreciate the 5 year old point of view from you joannalh!). Sounds completely workable for us. He could easily walk a mile/half hour on flat ground with no problem and he's used to trekking large hills in our own neighborhood, so a couple of blocks should be a snap!

Sounds like there is no reason for us to shy away from wandering a bit once we return from our morning excursion. I really appreciate you all setting my mind at ease!

Is there a map online that we could look at for Halifax or does anyone know if we can order one from their Visitor's bureau?

Also, the same question goes for Saint John?

thanks

There are visitors bureaus for both cities online. I received great information & maps for both cities.

Thanks for the links. I'll have to check them out and send them to the others that are traveling with us.

I have been trying to collect all the posted links from this thread so far, here they are, in some kind of sleep deprived logical order :surfweb:, I will edit the first post and add them there as soon as I can figure out how to transfer the formating. I will add new ones as they appear. its a long list, but here it is:

So excited to have found this thread!

Just booked our first Disney cruise last week.

I will be traveling with my 78 year old mother and my daughter, who will turn 13 the week before the cruise.

Looking foward to reading the posts so far to figure out what to do in the two ports that will please Grandma and DD (and myself..though I'm happy if they are both happy!)

It seems that I've read a lot about hills....my mom really can't manage that so I'm thinking of the hop on/off pink bus...which I believe is in both ports??

And I've read about Freak Lunchbox and Beavertails, which will be fun for my daughter. (both in Halifax?) as well as the Titanic Museum (forget the name of this??)

My mom will enjoy the craft markets etc....

As for Saint John, I had wanted to do Hopewell Rocks but it is pricy for a 2 hour drive so I think we will pass.

Someone mentioned the Sugar Shack?? I am from Boston (my mom from NYC) so we have all done maple sugar things, lobster things and lighthouses! However the appeal of the Disney ship and the NYC port lured my mom to the cruise destination!

Looking forward to advice and ideas!

We sail on July 8!
Thanks!

So....just found out yesterday that my husband can't take leave for our long-planned August Fantasy cruise :sad1: Devastated at the thought of not cruising this summer , I quickly was able to get our TA to switch us to the June 15 Canadian cruise. I'm getting super excited, but know virtually nothing about the areas we are visiting, so I am furiously reading through all these threads.

I have some questions....

-Would Peggy's Cove appeal to a 9 and 7 year old? What is there to do/look at there aside from the lighthouse?
-Hopewell Rocks look spectacular, but a two hour plus bus ride each way ? Yikes! Is it worth it?
-disappointed that the are too young for the tidal bore boating. Is it exciting to just look at the tides reversing? Is there a particular place to do it?

When I was young, I loved just climbing over the rocks at Peggy's Cove. Just keep them away from the waters edge, there is quite a bit of strong wave action. But there is a lot of rocks to climb on. There is a souvenier store, and trails I believe. There is also a beautiful memorial to the Air Disater that happened near there, where a plane crashed into the ocean with no survivors. I think they would have fun, but truthfully, there is a lot for them to do just in Halifax.

As for the Hipewell Rocks, I think the best time to see them is if you are going to be around during low tide. Then you get to see just how high the tides are there.

This link will give you a web page that posts the tide schedule.
Enter the date you are planning on going and it will tell you if you will be going during low tide.

As for reversing falls, yes there is a restaurant with a viewing platform, and a bridge, but it is a traffic bridge, but it does have a walkway. i believe there is a link to a walking path to it posted. Again there are things like the museum to do, fun for kids. If you go to St Andrews and don't want to do the Tea Party, the Huntsman Marine Aquarium is nice. It isn't the Boston Aquarium or Seaworld, but it does have local marine life in it.

Does anyone know anything about the Bay of Fundy Scenic Railway in Saint John?

Have you done it? What did you think of it? Do you think it would be fun for all ages?

This thread gives some suggestions regarding what excursions kids might enjoy in Canada: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2897245

Are you going on the June 10-15 Canadian cruise? If so, we have a very active meet group/FB page. The June 15 - 17 cruise is the Cruise to Nowhere.

Oops! My bad -- I am so unused to our new cruise plans that I typed the wrong dates. We are on the June 17 5 day. 2 days is not nearly long enough ;)

Sorry about no Fantasy, llqool, but so happy to have you onboard for Eastern Canada (and especially the June 17 sailing:goodvibes!)! Have you gotten through this whole thread? There's a contagious excitement here about the whole Canadian itinerary!

Can we go yet? :rotfl2:

Just looking out at the harbour that all you fine people will be sailing in to. It is a beautiful sunny day and I am thinking how excited I am to share my incredible city with you. Going for a walk, so I will have updated info later.

Hi there!
Excited to be on this cruise with all of you!!!

I'm Lisa, 36 and my DH is Lou 31...no kids yet but trying!! ;)

This will be our 7th Disney cruise and we couldn't be more excited!

I'd love to participate in the FE! I'm going to fill out the Google document link now! Yay! My first FE!

Also have to start making out door magnets....so much fun!

We looked at the excursions available and decided to do Halifax on our own. Maritime Museum, walk along the port, eat some yummy COWS ice cream, walk up the hill to Freaky Lunchbox, go to the Citadel and the walk down hill and grab a bite to eat (some yummy seafood!).

Can't wait!!!!! :dance3:

I am very excited to be visiting your city. I am already thinking that I will love it there. I am hoping that I can return in Sept with my mom. Just haven't heard if I can get the time off from work.
