Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend - The Dark Side 2017

I thought I read that it's better to have something in the POT even if it isn't great. Does anyone know if that's true?
Not anymore. They only look at Proof of Time if you put an estimated finish time of 2:45 or under. If you put say a 3:00 estimated finish they won't even look at the proof of time. Or say you put estimated 2:45 and a proof of time that equates to 3:00 they will put you in one of the last corrals since your proof isn't 2:45. So if your proof isn't 2:45 or under you don't need to put it. This is how I've read it working since they changed it to the 2:45 half time needed. You are better off just picking the correct estimated finish time & putting no proof if you don't have proof to back up an under 2:45 half.

So I'm in for the challenge. :) Anybody know where you can find some Star Wars themed socks, maybe even compression,or other running gear? I can't do costumes but maybe something to get me in the spirit of the weekend. Thanks.

Stance has all the Star Wars socks you ever need.

Under Armour does a series of Dark Side themed performance/compression gear. I ran last year's SWDS in a Death Star wicking tee (5k), Stormtrooper compression shirt (10k) and Darth Vader compression shirt (1/2).

In addition, you can find stylized Vader and Boba Fett sublimated shirts that would do well for running, too. I got a Boba Fett armor shirt on Amazon.

Thanks. I'll check them both out. :thumbsup2

Welcome to the Darkside! Amazon has all sorts of Star Wars socks if you aren't picky on what you where. They have a few tech shirts too if you type Star Wars tech shirt https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Si...84940409&sr=8-1&keywords=star+wars+tech+shirt

Has anyone stayed at Old Key West during the half? This is my first half and was just curious about any info for race and busses.

We're staying here for Dark Side but have no idea what its like for race weekends - you could maybe ask in the Marathon Weekend 2018 thread? (sorry this is no help whatsoever, just letting you know you'd have company!)

So after the awesome medals at this past weekends race is anyone underwhelmed by the Dark Side medals this year? I'm only excited for the 10k medal but the half marathon and challenge medal are a bit underwhelming. Also it seems like the challenge medals have all been a rectangular shape as of late, which I kind of liked. It seemed like there was a theme with rectangle challenge medals.. Lumiere, Gauntlet and Light Side challenge all were about same size and dimension... Just an observation.
The Rebel Challenge medal for 2017 was extremely disappointing. No detail whatsoever. My mom said "it might be C-3PO." For a challenge medal, there should be no might be about any character depicted on the medal. It's not the shape I hated so much as just an outline of C-3PO. They should have put a lot more detail into that medal especially since it was a challenge medal. People would be disappointed if any other challenge medal was just an outline.

I'm happy with the Dark Side medals. I think the detail is nice and I like the 1/2 medal even more than I did previously upon seeing it in person. While I would have loved a Darth Vader medal, it didn't happen. I'd rather have Kylo Ren than Boba Fett, Maul, or Dooku. I also think this year's Dark Side Challenge medal is better than last year's.

My Dark Side training is now officially underway, but since I ran the Rebel Challenge last weekend, I'm deciding between Rebel's 3 mile recovery run tomorrow or Dark Side's 6.5 mile regular run. My concern about the 6.5 miles has more to with if it's too much too soon after last weekend.

I took the week off after last weekend. When I got my massage today, I was really glad I was as apparently where my leg meets my hip was a solid rock when the session started. It was not a fun massage today! Gentle Yoga tomorrow and I'll start running again on Tuesday.

I was confused for a second - my DS plan has 5 miles for tomorrow. So, I just realized that I've been doing the beginning runner plan. :rolleyes1 Oh well, I guess it works out since I haven't run consistently since I did the marathon a couple of years ago, LOL. No wonder it has seemed kind of easy.

We r currently signed up for the 10k race my DS and i. we r thinking of doing the 5k also since its back open, only problem is our plan arrives late Thursday night so we cant get to the expose to get our bibs. Do they still have the pick up the am before the race starts??

Not officially, no. People have been able to get bibs in the morning in the past, but it's not a service rD advertises or guarantees will be offered. The more people who try to use it for reasons other than a multi-hour flight delay or personal emergency, the more likely they are to pull the plug.

Short Answer - Yes. When you show up to the race start, look to your left and find the 'guest relations' tent. All the unclaimed (by the night before at the expo) bibs are there. Have your signed waiver and your I'd. Plus catch the 1st bus to give yourself time. There are usually only 3-4 ppl working the tent.

You can email rD and they'll tell you the same.

I probably should have clarified that I'm running the Dark Side Challenge which I believe has a slightly different mileage schedule before it ramps up to the longer distances. At this point I've come to realize that somehow I'm an intermediate runner even if I'm a very slow runner. Or as we often celebrated in the second to last corral at Light Side, "forward is a pace."

When it comes to headphones and races (or headphones in general while running, actually, now that I think about it), I just wear one ear so that I can hear whatever I feel like listening to but am still able to hear everything going on around me.
THIS! :) I need to have something to partially zone out to:rockband:, but I also HAVE to hear who's coming up behind me, inevitably passing me (with or without proper running etiquette:crazy2:), and whatever else (including better songs!) might be going on! :goodvibes

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but did anyone else notice that the half marathon start time is listed on the website as 5:30? Wasn't it supposed to be 5:00, and isn't that what it was last year?

Just checked the event guide from last year and the start times were:

5k - 6:00
10k - 5:30
Half - 5:00

No idea what the plans for this year are.
