Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend - The Dark Side 2017

That is so disappointing. I would absolutely choose this race just to get a picture with all of those characters tbh. Jedi Mickey is my FAVORITE.

I can't verify the veracity of this, but DW and I were speaking with one of the featured artists at the Art of Disney in Epcot. He told us that as part of the licensing agreement between Disney and Star Wars (Lucas Arts, maybe?) mashup characters were no longer going to be allowed. So we may have seen the last of Jedi Mickey, Leia Minnie and company.

I heard the same thing when we bought the last painting of Sith Donald and had him sign it.

Ugh, this terrifies me as a Northerner who doesn't tolerate heat all that well. I'm contemplating joining a hot yoga place in March so at least I can know I can spend at least an hour in unbearable heat and not pass out.

I run several times a week in the Florida heat and humidity, and while it's miserable, it's doable. I went to a hot yoga class once and thought I was going to die. I had to lay on the mat for about 15 minutes after the class ended before I could even stand up. I suppose you could do it just so you can say, "well, at least it won't be this bad!"

I heard that too from some CM friends. It's sad though because I think the mashup characters are so adorable.

Yeah, I heard this too. It's too bad as they were amazing characters for Star Wars Weekends too.

That's good to know. Do you park at the finish (EPCOT) and then take a bus to the start?

For the full marathon it started and ended at EPCOT so no bus was needed if you parked at EPCOT. For the Star Wars half it looks like a bus will be needed to get from the finish back to the parking.

I read the same thing somewhere. I've loved Star Wars almost as long as I've loved Mickey Mouse. That said, I understand why Lucasfilm wouldn't want to do this especially with Star Wars land coming to the parks in a few years.

Besides that when I heard a mother and daughter get very excited to see Minnie in her "wedding dress" I can see why both Disney and Lucasfilm might want to end the fun of those meet and greets. It's important for Lucasfilm to protect the brand and keep its identity separate from Disney. That said, I also completely understand the disappointment of those who would love to meet Jedi Mickey and friends at least once and never got the chance.

Well, coming from the Northeast myself, I trained outside as long as I could. Basically until it turned frigid to run. I can only get out after work and my first battle was the time changing and losing daylight that much earlier. But despite it all, I got to seven miles before I was driven indoors. I'm trying to take comfort that at least I'm maintaining mileage I achieved before turning to the treadmill, and hope that any I seem to gain will support psychologically when running back on the streets come race day. However, it is that temperature factor that troubles me the most. Having those seven in the dark and in the chill of nightfall, I'm hoping to get at least that far before it hits me. Am I just fooling myself?

Well, just signed up for the Dark Side Challenge. First rD races outside of Marathon Weekend. I guess I'll be paying a little more attention to this thread.

Welcome to a non-marathon weekend! This is actually the only weekend that I have run so far. I am hoping to eventually get to the marathon weekend, but I can never seem to make the schedule work.

The California races have a different vibe and while I love Disney World, IMHO the Disneyland races are a better experience overall despite the limited park time for the half. The 10ks in Disneyland are park concentrated and I feel are the best courses in Disney!

Enjoy.

Question for everyone out there...so once medals are earned is it just ice baths and nutrition <or> do some hit the parks? Then is it with or without hardware?

For me, I'll be flying out on Sunday night to get back to work on Monday, so it depends on what kind of park ticket I end up getting. If I get an annual pass in preparation for another trip within the year, I'll go to the parks for a little while. But if I just get a park hopper ticket, I wouldn't want to spend a day of it for just a few hours that afternoon. So I'd probably just hang out at Disney Springs. That's what I did when I was down for Wine and Dine. Being on a teacher school schedule means that any trip I take for a race has to be short. This one is a bit longer since the week leading up to the races is Spring Break. But school starts back on Monday.

We did MK after the 5k last year and HS after the 1/2, breakfast, shower, and a nap. A lot of people had medals - it was fun. We got some fun pics with Kylo Ren and Chewy, too! I worked hard for that 1/2 medal, I'm shocked I'm not still wearing it.

Last year, I didn't visit the parks at all, just Disney Springs, but I had a 1:00p flight on Sunday. This year I booked a Sunday evening flight, so I plan on hitting Epcot on Sunday before my flight. As far as medals, I personally won't wear them even though I like seeing others with them. I will, however, wear a race shirt.

Definitely park time! Back to the room, shower, change, something to eat, maybe a nap then hit the parks! You are at Disney, after all. Wear the day's medal with pride and enjoy all the congratulations directed your way by both guests and CMs.

Compression sleeves for the calves work well fighting the post-race fatigue and keeping on the move helps speed recovery more than crashing and laying around.

A little bit of both - I stay at a boardwalk resort when there for races so, following the race, I walk back to the resort through Epcot. It works out well as a good cool down post race. I stop at Starbucks for a giant iced beverage of some sort, maybe hit the France bakery for a pastry, then go back to the room. Ice bath, hot shower, then maybe some real food, although it usually takes a little while to get an appetite for me. Then I might rest for an hour or so, depending on how I feel, and then it's off to the parks.

Always with hardware, then I hit up every single Photopass photographer and every single ride with a picture. :hyper:
