Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

I love this thread. It has had quite a bit of info and support. I will be doing it on our cruise next year. I do know it is quite a while away but I am a bit of a big girl and am using the run as a big goal. My big question at the moment is that I reside in a cold climate. Like it still snows in may type deal. Is there a way to train so my body dose not go into shock? The run is at the end of the cruise. I was hoping to run the ship the week before to get use to the heat.
:scratchin

Congratulations on using this run as a goal!

My climate is nothing as extreme as yours, but even I have a hard time getting myself used to the tropics. I think that first, you've just got the conditioning you have to do. Just get used to running/jogging (I personally do Galloway walk/jog), get your muscles, your heart, your lungs, and your blood vessels used to running. That's the biggest step; if you have any lung issues, take your time as you work yourself into running. I did a walk/jog Couch to 5K program, and had to repeat weeks simply because my lungs were NOT ready to go an extra amount of time/distance.

After you've started down the road to that sort of conditioning, you can look towards keeping yourself OK in the heat. Is it EVER hot in your area? The last couple days I've been keeping my running jacket on, even while hot. I'm not really doing it on purpose, but I'm running in a windy area that involves a bridge over a highway, and I don't really want to lose my running jacket by carrying it. I figure it might help me get used to being hot. :)

And don't forget to pay attention to hydration. See what works for you. For me, those first few 5Ks still required solid hydration, which made sure I was ready to run on Castaway.

Obviously, all I have are thoughts for you, not solid "do this" notes. But hopefully it can help a little bit.

Sorry if this has been answered but do yiu have to complete the race within a certain anount of time?

Some have said that if you finish beyond an hour, you have to find the CMs for the medals or have them delivered to your room. I haven't quite taken an hour (not far off, though...I'm slow!) but the CMs have been out still for me both times. So I can't speak to if it was that way on my two cruises.

It's run more by rundisney now, and their "rules" for other, more official, 5ks say a 16 minute mile, for what it's worth.

bumbershoot, I've never heard of the Galloway method! Thanks for sharing that! I found his app and will try it out.

His method is great! People like my silly brother scoff, but I still very much need those walking breaks. I recently did a Half and there were two women doing walk/jog intervals of one minute each. I was with them for awhile, and had to fall back because they had trained for jog intervals that were MUCH faster than mine! :)

Galloway is the official trainer of runDisney; if you ever do a different runDisney event, you'll be able to download his training programs.

Well here is my glass half empty:
After all our training, we don't get to run the 5k on the island. :(

Here is my glass half full:
THAT MEANS WILL HAVE TO COME BACK ON ANOTHER CRUISE AND RUN IT NEXT TIME. Three time's the charm! :rotfl:

I know this has been asked and some things have changed since I ran it last year but, I now have to preregister right? Is it still possible for 2 adults to run and have the kids dropped off at scuddles club? Anything else I need to know that is different?

On the cruises that do the double dips do they offer the 5k twice. I would like to do the sting ray the first castaway and the 5k the second day.

They do seem to be opening Scuttles Cove early enough for the adults to do the 5K.

They have done it twice on other double dips, and I know I'm sure planning on it!

I ran the 5k on Saturday. They have stopped giving out medals :( instead you get a certificate. Have to be honest I'm pretty upset about it!

That is unfortunate, but honestly, the medals were just cheap-o plastic mickey heads. The fun of completing the Castaway Cay 5k is more in enjoying the island and the wonderful scenery while working off a night of desert or two ;) :thumbsup2

Our family ran this about two weeks ago while on the Magic. Things were well organized; we pre-registered with guest services and you need an ID (adults) and your key card to get off and on the ship. Or you could have registered that morning at Fathoms. Most had pre-registered. We left the ship about 8:45 (for the most part, first off the ship) or so, walked to the start and ran. I must admit I have been to Castaway 3 previous times and biked the route and even I got slightly confused about the route on the way back. Glad my husband was leading the way. The CM's emphasized many times that this was a "fun" run and our group seemed to embrace that. I know I did. I have been running for about 3 years, not the fastest or slowest and not that young anymore- LOL. Some ran fast, some walked, some did the run/walk. It was really fun. It was very warm. Drink plenty of water the day before and eat a light breakfast. They seemed to run out of water on my way back, but had plenty at the finish. We got the medals and of course you have your bib.

My DW ran April 25 on the Fantasy. About 220 people. They did get medals. They ran out of water at the finish.

She did notice that some people sign up...in order to be the first off the boat. And once off the boat, she said some just went down to the beach and got their spot...and never came back to run.

I guess it depends on the ship and their supply. I ran the 5k this past Friday(Fantasy) and we were given medals.

Wow! That is awful! I guess that explains why this past Friday we got off with all the other passengers:confused3 They no longer allow the runners to get off the ship before everyone else. Started the race after 10:00am and it was hotter than hot:furious:

One of the several reasons this should be a paid excursion.

I would prefer it to be a paid excursion if we got a medal similar to the other Disney 5k's.

FWIW, I did it twice last year and we weren't the first off the ship. That has never been a "given". It's never been an absolute. SOME people have been lucky enough to be first, but both times I did it we were in line with the other earlier beach people! So it's not necessarily a change, but the way it happened on your day.

Others have had that experience, and others have had different experiences. From what I can tell, the medals are carried by/on the ships. So if a ship is out of medals, their 5Ks won't have medals.

I can't even tell you how much i do NOT want it to be paid.

And anyone who has done a paid rundisney 5K can tell you that it's just plastic/rubber anyway! It's not a metal medal for the 5Ks (except Expedition Everest)!

So I was just curious on an update on WHEN the race PHYSICALLY begins. Not when they group, not when they meander to the start line, the actual time people start to run. :yay::yay:

I'm wondering because I'm starting to do races like the warrior dash and hard charge and whatnot (because I'm crazy and think they're fantastically fun) and I believe although you just get a medal/shirt/certificate/pat on the back/whatever they feel like handing out, etc.. that it would be a neat accomplishment. :cool1:

BUTTTTTTTTTTT I don't want to waste my ONE gorgeous beach day (hours) doing this. I know it wouldn't take me that long to run it, less than an hour, but if that hour is at like 10am, then that makes for a very sad, sam. Lol.

It varies for each race. The day gets started at the same time (the meeting in the lounge). Then it depends on the number of runners signing up, the number of people dropping kids at SC, taking bathroom breaks, the scenic route to the start, etc etc etc. The longest part was waiting at the start for everyone to catch up. Even with all that I'm pretty sure I was on a lounge chair before 10. Sent from my iPhone using DISBoards
