Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

They have actually disproven the incline thing. If it makes you feel better, do it. But unless you are über elite, it makes NO difference.

Yep; you can read about it at runnersworld.com. I'm faster on the treadmill, but it's because I live in Fl. It's a lovely 70-something-degree temperature- and humidity-controlled environment on the treadmill. Outside it's typically 80+ (both degrees and humidity). I may be one of the few people who actually LIKE the treadmill ;)

According to the cruise activities staff, there were over 250 people in our Castaway Cay 5k today from the Fantasy. They said it was a record number for the Fantasy. This was not a small event with numbers like that and I wouldn't be surprised if they start charging something for it but nothing was mentioned and I didn't ask.

They did hand out the plastic medals to finishers and there were plenty of shirts and hats for purchase at the shop. Glad I signed up and we had a great day afterwards on the island.

Ditto! DH and I were right there with you in that horde of over 250 runners :thumbsup2 We enjoyed the run and had a great day. Our DD's say they would like to do the 5k with us next year.

Which reminds me I wanted to mention since I don't think I've read it here - they seem to have lowered the age of the run to 10. I double checked over a few days and the Daily Navigator said the age is 10. There were several kids on our run who definitely looked like they weren't 12, so it must have been the correct info.

Does anyone have a map of the route or can describe the route for me?

I don't have a map handy, but I can describe the route. They walk you from the ship to the start which is in the area on CC near where the shops and equipment rentals are. When you head out you take an immediate right, run for a few minutes and then a left. You run briefly down the runway to the bike trail (about 1000m total). The bike trail is a loop. You run to the right into the bike loop. It's about 500m around the loop. When you exit the loop you go right and run down to the end of the runway, turn around and head back to the bike loop (about 1000m out & back). You run around the bike loop one more time. When you exit you turn left and head back towards the start. You run briefly on the runway, turn right then turn left and run towards the finish line (which is where you started!)

Can anyone post pictures of recent medals and t-shirts? Recall reading that they were redesigning them and possible were no longer available.

Thanks!

I was there mid March and they were the same as already pictured.

I'm sorry if this has been answered somewhere else in the thread... but if Castaway Cay is the first stop on the sailing, when do you find out the details and when do you sign up? (i.e., do I need to go right to guest services or port desk to sign up when I board?)

Yes guest services can give you all of the details and sign you up once you are on the ship.

how do you pay for the t-shirt at the end of the race? do you need cash or can you charge it to your cabin?

Great...thank you. I figured that, but wanted to make sure! Soooo want the shirt...and the medal, of course :cool1:

You do get info when you board, and that evening they will leave the Navigator for the next day in your room. So the info will be there.

FYI I just ran the 5K on Tuesday and they did not have any medals. We instead got certificates. I was, and still am, so incredibly disappointed and will hopefully be emailing and/or calling to see what is going on. Guest Services said they haven't had medals for at least 2 weeks and are not giving them out anymore. I don't know that I fully believe that, but it is what I was told. At the race someone said the company hadn't shipped them. So YMMV but don't count on a medal like I did. That was honestly the only reason I ran. Well, it was what got me out of bed that morning.

:(:(
Awww. So sorry. We had them on the March 13 cruise. If it's been two weeks, we must have been close to the last ones.

What ship were you on? I'm running next week and not getting a medal will be extremely disappointing for me. I've been training for 3 months, I want my medal!

That's very disappointing! Boo!

Aw darn! Sounds like about 1.5 years ago when it seemed that the medals are dependent on the ship's stock of them.

But Nancy, it's awesome that you did get up, you got that bib and ran that incredibly unique 5k! Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but at some point I hope that the certificate (which I have not gotten) can take its place in your heart as a medal. :)

(Says the person who whined for a month about being too sick to enjoy her races or to go into the parks with medals, lol)

I was on the Dream. I hope they get them back, because this was really disappointing!!!

Thanks, Molly. I know you get it. :thumbsup2 I am proud that I got up and did it, even without any real preparation or training AND the wrong shoes. And now I have motivation to do it again! :woohoo:

We sailed on the Magic last week, Castaway Cay on Wednesday, and I'm 99.9% sure I saw 5k runners with medals. Maybe the Dream was out, or maybe the Magic is still giving them away until they run out.

DH & I ran the 5k two weeks ago and we received medals :confused3 The CM even remarked that it was the biggest group he'd had for the 5k from the Fantasy (over 250 runners), but there was a medal for everyone and no mention that they are being discontinued. Maybe as others have speculated it's based on the ship's individual supply?
