Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

A friend of mine did the 5k in November and she just told me that they weren't allowed to keep their bibs and had to turn them back in. I've never heard anyone mention that in here before. Is this normal? :confused3 I've never heard of having to give back the bid after a race!

I believe the 5k's that you pay an entry for are always timed.. as at WDW and DL.

DS and I did the WDW marathon weekend 5K (not as Dopey participants) and we have no official time.

No, that's not normal, and honestly I think she misunderstood. They can't do anything with the bibs; mine have sweat all over them and water if I miss my mouth, and they wouldn't look new or nice at all. I wonder if they asked for the safety pins and she misunderstood.

Well she told me she thought it was weird that they would want a bib back after people had sweated all over it! :rotfl2:

Would I be able to walk the whole thing? Can't run but would love to do it!

We walked the entire thing last year. It was awesome and will be doing it again next month!

I'm concerned about the 12 and over thing. Not sure what's up with that. The RunDisney 5ks are "family runs". My kids ran Mickey's Jingle Jungle in November.

They also ran the Castaway Cay 5k 2 years ago and got bibs and "medals" and were able to register no problem. They were 8 then. They'll be 10 for this year's trip and we won't run the 5k if they can't run it with us. Sounds like I won't know for sure until we're on the ship.

I've run the race twice- once in September and once in November. I think the problem is the heat. I felt like it was the hottest race I have ever run. My comparison includes the Peachtree Road Race which is in Atlanta on the 4th of July.

So it will be me and my two kids (ages13,14). Do we register on the ship or ahead of time? Is there a fee or still free? And lastly--thank you for answering about walking--what if I take a loooooooong time----will that be ok???

It's true that it makes NO sense. But it's part of the new official rules. Who knows why?

Since everything is changing, it's hard to answer for the future, really. So far it's been a register-on-board thing; either that morning at the meetup place or before at the PA desk. And so far there's no cost (hope that doesn't change...having a charge is all well and good for a one-time thing, but if you're an avid cruiser it could get overwhelming to have all those SAME t-shirts and same medals (unless, of course, they make medals that aren't the same ones given for basketball dunking contests, etc)).

I definitely want to do this on our cruise! We're going on the 9/7 one and I've been training on and off with the ZR5K app. Ankle problems keep me around week 1/2 but I got some ankle stabilizers that I hope will keep me training through the 8 weeks. If you're also going on the 9/7 run, say hi!

I just got off the Magic yesterday and ran it for the 2nd time. You can register at guest services beforehand or show up at the meeting spot in the morning and register. They kept reiterating that you had to at least be 12. We were able to drop our kids off at Scuttles Cove. There were plenty of walkers and if for some reason you don't finish within a certain period of time your medal will be delivered to your stateroom later in the day.

I wish that Disney would give out real medals for this. I completed the Goofy Challenge at WDW last month and the Disney Marathon last year and got spoiled with some nice RunDisney medals. I'd be willing to pay a registration fee to get a T-shirt and a cool medal for a race in the Bahamas!

By the way, I am incredibly proud of all of you who are making this your first 5K or first running experience at all. Three years ago, I had 40 more pounds on me and couldn't run half a mile. If I can do it, y'all can definitely do it, too!

Other than Expedition Everest, runDisney never has metal medals for 5K races. They are always plastic or PVC.

I just got off the Wonder on Friday and did the 5K on Castaway Cay Thursday morning. My niece and I walked the whole way and sprinted across the finish line! No problem walking the whole thing at all. It is very peaceful on that walk. Go For It!!! I am so glad I did.

I love my medal and the bib. And yes, I bought the shirt...and the hat...and the trading pin. LOL!! DH always jokes that I will do anything for a Disney souvenir! (I had already planned on buying the shirt and such before we went on the trip so it wasn't a shock that it was $21.95. I have spent more money on less meaningful things)

You sign up for the 5K at the Port Adventures desk. They give you a ticket to take to registration with you the morning of the race. No cost. We all met in Diversions at 8:00am and headed out to the bike rental starting point at 8:30-ish. The race started at around 9:00. I walked it in 48 minutes. No training as I have a bad knee, but wanted to do the event. It was really amazing. Looking forward to the next one!!!

We're going to be doing the 5k in November. I am also using the Couch to 5k app. I heard that some people have walked it and still had a decent time. I'm excited. My husband, daughter, mother and brothers will be doing it with me as well. I'm not a runner, but the rest of them are. This will be my first run. They are doing it with me for support and to cheer me on!!!:banana:

Really want to do the Catamaran at 1:15. It was exhausting to swim to the fish in the snorkel.lagoon and I LOVE these excursions..I figured after we run the 5k, we won't want to swim against the current for an hr or two when we can lounge as mermaids on the snorkel catamaran and cruise around the island TO the fish. Is this feasible? Run 5k in the morning , have lunch ad make the 1:15 catamaran?

When in November? We are on the 11/10 Dream double dip, and this will be my first 5k too! I guess I had better get busy with the training so as not to make a complete fool of myself! :)
