Official 2008 Beijing Olympics Thread

Finally (for now), I was disappointed in Sanya Richards's comments when compared to Jones. I don't believe for one second she had a cramp. They replayed the race from where she said it occurred. Her face doesn't flinch or anything. And when she finished, she just stood there. Most people would have to 1.) massage it, 2.) keep walking/stretching to work it out, 3.) say "Ow!" and wince in pain. She did none of these. I think she made up an excuse. That's poor sportsmanship.

When they showed the replay (before talking with her) My husband said to me "I think she hurt her right foot or something." Apparently he saw something. I didn't, but it sure caught his eye. Weird.

I didnt see that either....good eye...I retract my earlier statement.

I saw the face your husband is talking about, but it was before Sanya said her leg started to cramp. I think the face actually said, "Oh crap. I started too fast. I can hear them behind me. Look how far the finish line still is. Oh crap."

In track, that's called "Hitting the Wall."

So, I'm going out tonight with friends. Would y'all record the gymnastics gala? I'm figuring it will be on in the bar. But I might be distracted since I'll be with other people. I also figure the Cubs game will be on.

I'll probably be a dork and record it. We had to record last Sat. What a relief! We watched the marathon in fast forward and were only behind 10 minutes when we finished. I almost prefer watching in fast forward.

I feel like I have my life back now that gymnastics is over. I'll enjoy watching everything else, but nothing else is a "must see" and if I'm sleepy I'll go to bed.;)

I didn't notice anything on the replay either.

my quess is they didnt go back far enough with the replay to show what the other Dis poster saw and she had already ran off the cramp where they shown the replay from ...when I get a night (foot or calf) cramp and jump out of bed and take a few steps to walk it off its usually goes away quick....so I guess it is possible in her case too.

Since you follow the sport...the Lopez family has received lots of local press. I read on some thread that the female Lopez "doesn't deserve to be on the team." Do you agree and what's the story?

I hadn't heard that story. I'll have to ask DH and check it out. He gets TKD Times magazine, etc, so maybe he's heard about it.

Tonight's beach volleyball final is a must see for me. Beyond that can't think of anything.

They were in People Magazine a couple weeks ago too. They did about a month's worth of Olympic profiles. The Lopez's were one.

The music from one of those Chinese girl's floor routines is going through my head and I can't get it out. AAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhh!

Speaking of baseball . . .

Did any of you watch the story the other night about why the Olympics are dropping softball and baseball?

It seems for opposite reasons.

They want the superstars for baseball, much like the USA basketball "Dream Team". I guess that means they want the A-Rod's and the Derek Jeter's of MLB, and since they can't get them, it's being dropped.

But softball is just the opposite. They are dropping that because the US is just too dominant. Since 1996, when it was first added, the US women's softball teams have outscored their opponents 53 - 1, and that one run was unearned. Most of the games were called on the 7-run mercy rule. So since no one can beat us, they are taking their marbles and going home.

Neither of these reasons sound very good to me.

What do you think?

Those are poor excuses.

I would accept an excuse like lack of interest, poor ticket sales to the events. But, from what I've seen on TV, the Baseball and Softball games are attracting large crowds, better than Beach Volleyball (which I happen to enjoy watching, looking forward to watching the finals go USA!!!).

Weird....I bet if they do drop for London, they'll pick it up again at the next Olympics because people will want it (well, not me, but a lot of people).
