I'm still upset that "The Song of the South" isn't available for purchase anywhere, but Disney keeps Tom Sawyer's Island with "Injun Joe's Cave". If "Song" is too "offensive" to sell, why have a ride based on it?

Yeah, but they're not legit ways to get them. Disney is ashamed of it, they don't want their name on it or to look like they're profiting from it ... but the shove Splash Mountain in our faces lol

I wish Disney would release it on Blu Ray with it digitally enhanced and lots of backstory on Uncle Remus tales and african storytelling tradition, but I can't see it happening. My DD loves it because she knows the background on the Uncle Remus tales--she learned about them in Williamsburg from an awesome storyteller.

I agree. I'm not offended by any of it by any means but my daughter did ask me why the ladies were tied up and I was like....ehhhh..... I mean how do you answer that question? 'Oh they just stole them away and now they're selling them like cattle to drunken men who want a wife'. I can't remember what I said but I think it was basically a "look, something shiny!" kind of answer and it was immediately forgotten and replaced by "Why is that woman chasing that man around with a rolling pin?" *phew*

I couldn't agree more. I just looked at it as an opportunity to start teaching my sons about sexism, and some of the ugly parts in our history and human nature. I wouldn't want the ride changed. It's one of my favourites! No need to clean up history, or the fantasy pirate tropes that exist as part of our culture, sanitizing everything doesn't just make it go away, but it's really important to me to teach my kids about these things in the context of my own values and the larger picture of how these attitudes hurt people in the world. A great learning opportunity IMO. I wouldn't want my sons to just watch that and think it was ok. I want them to be able to think about it more complexly than that.
