Well...As most of you know I was promoted to head cashier on 10/8 of this year.Well today the Director presented me with an opportunity to be the manager of the school I am at now!! I would skip right over being an Assistant and go into the lunchroom manager. It is a bit scary but I know I could do the job. To give you a bit of background: I have 7 years restaurant management experience as well as over 4 years experience in school lunchrooms.

Dh says take the job but the reservations I have with it is what the other people will say about it. I know it should not matter but I don't want to be the subject of negative talk. (The negative talk would mostly surround the fact that I have only been working with this county for just over a year. I am Not a kiss a$$ person at all.I just believe in doing a good job.

What are your opinions???

I say take the job........People are always going to have something negative to say because they are jealous.....you need to do what is best for you because no one else is gonna.....try not to worry about what people are saying.....it's not worth it and you will start to believe what they say after awhile if you do....they are promoting you for a reason........YOU DESERVE THE POSITION........nothing else matters.....maybe you can hope that you will set an example for others that hard work, determination and the right attitude will get you where you want to go in life.

I am proud of you and I hope you will do what is best for you and your family.....whatever it may be! Listen to yourself.....it's the only voice that is important!

Have A Disney Day!!!!!

The only reservation I'd have about taking the job is that it sounds like you will have to supervise the people who may be talking about you. Supervision comes with it's own set of headaches, as you know after managing restaurants. As long as you're confident that you can handle the supervision stuff, I'd say go for it!!

Besides, if anyone questions why you got the job, you can always list off your prior job experience. Even if they have been there longer, your experience at other places makes you more qualified to manage the lunchroom.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

I say that you earned this promotion, you deserve it and you should take it.

You did not ask for this promotion and you can tell any naysayers the truth about that, right?

Take the promotion. You've earned it and I'm really proud of you.

I say go for it! You have great will power and can accomplish goals. You will be great at this job. I think the confidence you gained while losing your weight will be a big asset to this job along with all your prior experience.

Wow........everyday i see more and more people on these boards from PA and it is great..........

Anyhoo........I really think you should take this position......you earned it and you shouldn't have to explain to anyone why you have it.......even though when people ask you, you feel like you should......just remember that you are in control of your own future......make it great because those people aren't gonna make it great for you.....they aren't gonna matter.....just be yourself and it will all work out!

I would take the position if that is what you want to do. People will talk about you no matter where you work, it seems like you really can't please everyone everyday no matter how hard you try. It's O.K. to feel bad for them, that they wern't chosen, but you should feel proud of yourself for being chosen! They should be happy for you too, but that's not always the case.
I think you should take it!

Thanks guys!!!! I am still going to sleep on this a few days. I do have Jennifer to think about also. She is 6 yrs old and it would mean that she would have to get up at around 5:15 (so I could get to work at 6 am)most mornings and go to work with me until time for the employee bus to take her to her school. I am leaning towards taking it but the Director told me to take up to 2 weeks to decide. I did tell het that if I decide to take it I would rather wait until Dec. 1st to start because I am taking the last work day in November(25th) off as we will be in Orlando and that day would be an inventory day.

I think I know where you're coming from on this one. I was once in a position where I was temporarily bumped up to an office manager in a place where I was actually the newest hire. It was only a temporary assignment, but I did discuss the implications of a permanent placement with my boss. While I had a good relationship with everyone else, one person had been hoping to get the job for quite some time, and there was fear that he would "retaliate." However, quite simply (as it sounds in your case as well), the other people either weren't qualified in terms of education and experience, or they just weren't quite the right fit in terms of being a supervisor.

It seems in your case you are indeed the right fit and the most qualified, and apparently your Director sees that. I too think you should take it, because although you've only been there for a year, you have other experience and the attitude to show that you deserve this position.

If you are on pretty good terms with the workers there, I would actually approach them and ask them if they would have any concerns with you as a supervisor even if they were there before you (this is what I would have done had I stayed at the job I mentioned above, but I moved on), and basically try to smooth things over now before any "talk" can even get started. Only you can decide if that will work in your situation though.

In any case, I'd say go for it! Let us know what happens!

EXACTLY!!!! However I can not say anything to the folks I work with yet because the current Manager is still in her position!!! There have been a whole lot of concerns with the temperatures of the food going out and the cleanliness of the kitchen among other things.
The Asst. manager at this school does not have her GED which is the minimum required to do the job. I think that is the case with several of the workers that have been with the system for several years. They have been encouraged to at least get their GED's but never have. I am SOOOO glad I stayed in school and got some college course in!!!

:hyper: I am so happy for you!!! You should go for it!! Obviously they like the work you do...its kinda like overcoming the response to "you look nice today" our first response is "oh--my hair would not cooperate today" instead of simply saying "thank you!" here is your chance to do that. say thank you and do your best!

Congratulations!!

Hi Jenn,
I say that if you want the job, go for it. Who cares what the others say. Only you are responsible for your future, and they would just say things out of jelousy. If you want it, and you don't take it you will always wonder.

Good luck, I know it's scary when there is controversy.

Go for it! You can do it and you'll feel great once you get into the swing of things. Sorry that your daughter will have to get up so early but she will get used to it!

As for those other people - let them gossip if they want. You can rise above it. Who cares what other people think of you. As long as they do their job and don't get in the way of you doing your job, then that's what counts. Besides, I'm sure once they get used to the idea of you filling the role of manager they will be happy to work for you!

Don't let that be the reason you DON'T take the job. You are a great WISH success story, why not add another wonderful success story to your life? :)

After reading more of your posts, I think you SHOULD take the job AND you should help and encourage those other workers. Maybe you can encourage them to get their GEDs and take some courses so they'll be prepared to move up the ladder later on.

At the very least, you can show them how to run a clean and safe kitchen and improve the food for the kids at that school. You'll be helping you (promotion), helping the workers (preparing them to move up) and helping the kids (safer food). It all sounds like a win-win situation for everyone.

The only one inconvenienced is your daughter who will have to get up earlier. However, she'll be fine and you'll be setting such a good example for her.

Go for it!!

Ya'll are so wonderful!!!!

When I turned in my deposits and paperwork today the director met me outside and she presented me with another possibility!!
She was taking Jennifer into consideration and thought of a way to bring me in as an assistant manager at the same school Jennifer goes to. I would have to be there at 7am instead of 6am and it would give me the chance to learn some of the paperwork beforehand.

I told the director that I am about 90% there and both Don and Jennifer said to go for it. I told her to take both options to her boss and see what he thought and then we would go from there. So we will see how things progress!!!I will keep you guys informed!!!

Thanks again for all your support and well wishes. Sheila

Wow Sheila ... you must do an awesome job! Such great possibilities for you! Good luck with your decision-making! I say go for whatever makes you happy.

Mary-Liz

Wow, Shelia, this is getting more and more exciting, isn't it!! With all your food service experience, I'm sure you will be a great asset no matter which position you decide on! I'm so proud of you!!! :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Wow, if they are willing to give you other options to accomodate your daughter, they sound as if they are confident in your abilities and that they really want you. I like the second option myself, it would be easier on your daughter and you would be in her school and it is still a nice promotion. Think about what you really want for you and your family and go from there, because as others have said there is always the gossip mongers in the group, ay them no mind and do what is best for you.

Congratulations, and good luck with your decision.
