Off topic - anyone gone from AL to washington DC

Looking to take DD to Washington DC in May next year. Having a hard time planning a route! Campgrounds near Knoxville, TN all are bad and that would be a good stopping spot for us. Suggestions? Experiences?

I'd stop in a smaller town before or after Knoxville.

I do know there is a safe KOA in Wytheville Va.

What about a campground near Pigeon Forge? Pigeon Forge is about 45 minutes past Knoxville- downside is that it's a little bit away from the interstate and may be expensive since it's a vacation area.

Bristol TN/VA is about an hour and 45 minutes past Knoxville, on the border of VA and TN and has many campgrounds to accommodate the Nascar races. There is a campground at a park called Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol, VA that seems to be really cheap. The only reason I know about it is that the park is so cute so we drove back all the way through it to the camping area. It is in the middle of an area between Target and Walmart and there are several restaurants nearby.

45 miles past Bristol, Hungry Mother State Park is in Marion, VA. There are sites right on a stream that feeds the lake and the town of Marion is small, cute, and safe.

As 2goofycampers mentioned, Wytheville, VA has a KOA that lots of people seem to like. It is around 30 miles past Marion, so almost 3 hours past Knoxville.

We just stayed at a beautiful campground off I-40 slightly east of Knoxville, TN at Dandridge, TN. It's on a rise by the lake and the views are beautiful, and the campground is A-1 pristine. It's called Anchor Down.
