Trip participants – Colin (43) Me (38) and Zach (8)

Day 3 1st June 2003

We got up fairly late today, as we were all pretty knackered. We did the usual and caught the bus into town.

Sidebar about the buses in case anyone else goes to Port Douglas – there are 2 bus companies – Coral Reef and Sun Palm, and in typical bad management style, neither accepts the others tickets. So we bought a 3 day ticket for Sun Palm as they were the more efficient bus company – at least they turned up on time, every 15 mins.

We had a nice breakfast at a place called the Java Café, which played great music, for AU$33, for the 3 of us – Zach was eating again now, even if was only toast and sprite. Then we headed off to the Sunday Market, which was fantastic, Fruit, veg, clothes, locally made jewellery and all sorts of arts and crafts. It was supposedly the first day of winter but Zach and I started overheating rapidly – about 33º I think. So we retired to the nearest pub for water and shade for about an hour until Colin came to find us. Then refreshed we re-entered the fray and I continued to shop for England. I got some lovely home made soap, a couple of hand-printed shirts (AU$16 each) for the boys, a boomerang for Zach (AU$20), a lovely silver and turquoise bracelet (AU$25) and a sunhat with no top for my pigtail to go through (AU$20) for myself. Then back into the main street, While Col hit the music shop I got myself a smoothie and Zach an ice cream and some more sunglasses as he had mysteriously mislaid his original pair.

We all went back to the hotel, where Zach and I retired to the pool and Col went off to take photos on the beach. Got Zach some fries to eat by the pool as he was now suffering boy hunger – i.e. bottomless stomach syndrome. We went into town early again to get a Thai curry – green chicken for me and red beef for Col. We each had starters and coffee and the bill came to about AU$64.00.

Zach zonked again as soon as he hit the sack, so we went to play pool in the other bar where I played utterly uselessly against Col (not having played for about 15 yrs – my excuse and I’m sticking to it!) Really hot and sticky as no air-conditioning in this bar so went back to the other bar and put up with the lounge singer so we could cool down. Went to bed about midnight again.
