Off to Edinburgh

Just booked a short weekend in Edinburgh with DBF for July, so the main question is what hidden gems are there for restaurants or bars? Also any off the beaten track things to do?

You should do one of those nighttime walks that are organised, they take you through all the little side streets and tell you spooky stories about the history of the place.

I also love sitting outside one of the pubs at the Grassmarket or the Royal Mile having a glass of wine or two watching the world go by. Last time I was there it was so sunny and warm so made all the difference.

Think your trip might be too early to see the Edinburgh Military Tattoo but its a must see if you are there when its on.

DH and I went quite a few years ago before we had the children, think it was my birthday present to him one year, we flew and hired a car and I seem to remember us going to St Andrews and the Golf course. We went around the castle and visited the new Scottish Parliament building which was being constructed (with much controversy) at the time. Along with a lovely Thai meal in a restaurant that was literally somebody's house thats all I remember us doing to be honest
Oh, I remember DH bought me a lovely Pink Harris tweed handbag which I still use to this day. Worth every penny

The Cellar Door Restaurant on George IV Bridge is excellent. It does brunch and lunches plus evening meals or you can visit the cofee shop/patisserie. It has a web site but I'm not sure if I am allowed to post it, but I'll have a go. Mods, sorry if this is not allowed! I have no connection with the restaurant BTW

We had 5 nights in Edinburgh for our honeymoon in 2007 and DS has just returned from a couple of nights in a week long trip.

If you like seafood you'd love MUSSEL INN - just off Princes Street - they have a website.
CLam chowder and mussels and chips - about £15 each!!! And the best clam chowder and the biggest bowl of mussels ever!!
We went twice in 5 nights

We are going to Edinburgh in July as a base for going to the Open Golf at St Andrews.

We cant wait to go back to the Mussel Inn and are already booked in for our meal there!

We ate at another really posh seafood place (just off the top of Royal Mile) - the kind where the waiters hover - it was OK but not really worth the £££

Also we quite liked the Hard Rock Cafe - lovely meal - although its the same as all HRC's!!!!

I am all for Scottishness but I find those tartan Disney items tacky. But the tourists like them

No I can appreciate that but I have a child of 8 who collects Minnie Mouse and sometimes they do a different one there. Also the London Covent Garden store stocks some lovely london snowglobes (wouldn't you know it she collects them too) and she is keen on an Edinburgh trip in the Summer to see if she can get a Scottish one too.

A friend brought her a t shirt (yes that old chestnut) from their holidays and brought a Minnie in Edinburgh one (no tartan I'm afraid) - it attracted lots of positive comments on our last trip to WDW.

We love a trip to Edinburgh as the local area is so darn pretty, the shops and restaurants are brilliant and also my uncle (and son's namesake) was in a Scottish regiment in WW2 and we like to go to the castle and visit his name in the book of remembrance in the chapel. Can't recall though what time the canon is fired, that gets my kids going every time.

It's the 1 o'clock gun - I'm a local and I still forget every time I go to Princes Street and am like when it goes off!!!

Just got back from Edinburgh and we loved it so much we are seriously considering trying to move there someday! Haha.

We ate at Always Sunday, it's a breakfast and lunch cafe on the Royal Mile- delicious!! That was probably our favorite spot there. We also enjoyed treats at Chocolate Soup and we enjoyed the pub called The World's End (also on the Royal Mile). We ate at some other places that were just good, not fantastic.

Have a great time! We loved the castle, Holyrood house, the museum, walking the royal mile, visiting those monuments on the hill (can't remember what they were called). And make sure you get a picture by the fountain in the Prince's st gardens...so pretty! For those of you that do live there, I am totally jealous!

ETA- get fudge from the Fudge House on the Royal mile- sooo good especially their traditional butter tablet (the best out of all the fudge places we went to...and embarrassingly we went to a lot). We tried the Fudge Kitchen which is right nearby it, but it's not as good.
