Off-Site ECV Rental

I am thinking of renting an ECV off-site for the first time on my upcoming trip. Does anyone have any recommendations on which company to use or which to avoid?

Also, do the independent companies have the "over 18 to ride" rule? My 12 year old has hidden health conditions and tires easily, so I would like to share the ECV in appropriate situations (parking lots, open spaces, etc.).

Have you read the disABILITIES FAQs thread at the top of this forum yet? Post number 2 addresses ECVs, wheelchairs, and medical equipment rental. It includes a short list of companies with which DISers have had positive experiences http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=595713

Yes, over eighteen ONLY, except Randy's may rent to older teens IF they have experience with personal ECVs at home.

If by share you mean have the two of you on the ECV at the same time, NO YOU MAY NOT DO THIS. You put yourself, your child, the ECV, any vehicles, and any property at risk. Your contract with the rental company - verbal or written - prohibits more than ONE person from being on the ECV at any time. Ditto for allowing anyone under the age of eighteen from using one alone, unless EXPRESSLY permitted.

You might want to see about renting one from a company at home - checking their rules and regulations and that they mesh with ALL your needs - and bringing the ECV with you. However, they will not under ANY conditions allow more than one person on the ECV.

Thank you for your response, kaytieeldr. I guess my meaning was unclear. I didn't meant that we would be riding at the same time; I meant that I would like for her to be able to use it (alone) if she needed to do so and we were in a safe area for her to do that. Of course, I wouldn't do this if the company had an "over 18" policy, which apparently they all do. Oh well, bad idea I guess. :o

That's why I said to check with similar companies in your area. They may have different policies. They may even, if you can visually demonstrate she's capable and mature enough, make an exception. If you're flying, the airline will transport the ECV - I think there are travel tips in that FAQ as well, it's pretty complete.
