Odd Orthodontist question

Not sure where to ask this so this seemed the most likely spot. My son has braces and at times we have had to head to the orthodontist to have something fixed. Just started to think about that possibility during our trip.

Does anyone have any advice on local orthodontists - i.e. well recommended but also easy to get to? Just in case...

Thank you!

Not sure of any but when I went to the DCP only a week post wisdom teeth removal my dentist and oral surgeon both sent suggested dentist in the Orlando area. Not sure how they knew them but I know both of the guys I went to vacationed with their family in Orlando at least once a year. I didn't need to use them as I healed fine but thought maybe your Orthodontist knows someone in the area they can suggest as a back up.

My recommendation is to simply bring a set of pliers. Worst case, a wire breaks...just pull it out. A few days with no wire won't hurt anything and you won't have to pay for an emergency ortho visit. We had that happen at home (wire snapped) over a holiday weekend. The ortho called us back and told us to pull it out with pliers, because he was out of town and his emergency replacement charged $100 for each on call visit. We went in 4 days later to get a new wire put on. No harm done. An out of town ortho will likely NOT put on a new wire anyway, since they do not know the treatment plan, wire gauge being used, tightness, etc.

Thank you - we will come with pliers. Our ortho didn't know anybody in particular so will just limp along if something happens.

No recommendations but it does remind me of when I was a kid with braces and we were at my aunt and uncles lake house when my wire slipped and about an inch of wire was jabbing into the side of my cheek. No amount of wax was giving me any relief. My aunt (who at least is a dental hygienist) stuck a huge pair of wire cutters in my mouth and clipped it off to get me through the weekend until I could get to the orthodontist on Monday. It was quite comical.

Honestly, I never would have thought about this. We have had two kids in braces (so far, last one will be in them next year). We had taken several vacations and even moved from South Alabama to interior Alaska (we travelled for a month) and never had any issues with the kids in braces. Sure, there were times over those years where a bracket fell off, but nothing that couldn't wait if need be. I would say, don't stress over your vacation, this is really not a hugh deal. If you are that concerned make an appointment within a day or so of leaving for vacation. And HAVE FUN! :)

Just remember if you're flying there, pack the pliers in your checked baggage not the cary-on.
