OCCUPATION: Medical practice office manager

DIAGNOSED: June 1985

WHAT HELPED: My faith in God. I read every Scripture on healing in the Bible that I could find and I claimed them for myself and believed them.

OUTLOOK: Being cancer free for 23 years has been a real blessing. I have been able to encourage other women and show them that there is hope. I have been active in many local support groups, most recently the Lydia Project, through which I am able to encourage women with notes and through our prayer group.

ADVICE: Allow your family and friends to help you and to remember you are not alone in this battle.

PERSONAL: When I was diagnosed in June 1985, my son was in college and my daughter was beginning, and the other daughter was starting her senior year in high school and there was no way I had time to deal with cancer. But deal with it we all did. My husband, being a physician, had the hardest time because he couldn't make it go away.

I wish I actually had money to make a donation or do something extra for the Breast Cancer cause, but I did at least contribute a bit so far. I just bought 8 of the pink recyclable bags at Acme Markets in support- a few for me and some for my mom. She is a breast cancer survivor of over 11 years who went through about 10 surgeries. She actually is also a medical office manager. Unfortunately we just recently lost her sister of 50 years old, my aunt, to colon cancer from the strain of breast/colon cancer that runs in my family. The upcoming holidays will be the first without her but she will be with us in spirit.

Hey Tonya!!!

What a nice piece on your mom! The firefighters wore pink duty shirts the past three days for Breast Cancer Awareness. I know one of the stations was there today to interview some of the guys and our Financial Adminitrator who's currently dealing with breast cancer. They've been in the paper and such too. We were looking at somuchmore.com at the shirts she sells. Some of them have adorable sayings! I think we're getting our co-worker one for Christmas actually. We're actually selling the pink shirts (not the worn ones of course!) at my fire station and the response has been amazing! We had to place another order today because we've sold out of so many. It's wonderful to see people support such a wonderful cause and it's heartbreaking to hear the stories but so inspirational at the same time.

Best wishes and prayers to your family. :grouphug:

If you can't contribute money you can still help by clicking daily to help fund mammograms for women HERE

You can sign up for a daily e-minder and click each day. There are other causes you can click on that page as well.

How exciting!

My Mom is also a survivor of 22 years (she was 42 when it was found).

Thanks for sharing this!

i'm taking my mom and sister on the podcast cruise..

my mom is a breast cancer survivor..

my sister has ovarian cancer.....it's back now for the third time - she's about to enter a clinical trial....
the podcast cruise is what she's keeping in her mind to look forwards to...

my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 76.....the worst thing, it took us a while to find a doctor who was willing to treat a woman 'that old'...
all the others just wanted her to basically go away and die...

but her doctor (who treats ALL the old women with breast cancer in my mom's area) claims that older women are even more resilient than young women..

anyway, my mom did the full complement of treatments....chemo, surgery, radiation....

she looked pretty awful for the year right after her treatments...
but then she got better and started looking younger each year..

now she's 81 and still travels all over the world (she just came back from a trip to croatia, slovenia and montenegro)...

so anyone who knows an older person with breast cancer, know that the outcome can be excellent!...even when it's in an advanced stage when it's caught, as it was in my mom's case...
