I am planning a family trip over a weekend in October. From my research I have gathered that weekend can be quite crowded during that time )but not as bad as summer). Does anyone have any experience with traveling during that time? Also should early October be better than the weekend AFTER Columbus Day? Thanks in advance for any advice :)

I think all three weekend in October are likely to be very busy. Maybe not quite peak summer-busy, but getting close.
The first weekend in October (10/2-10/4) is Gay Days; one of the largest unofficial events at DLR, with several meet-ups in the parks.
The second weekend in October (10/10-10/13) is Columbus Day Weekend (so a three-day weekend of a lot of folks), plus there is the 25th CHOC Children's Walk on Sunday (10/12).
The third weekend in October (10/15-10/18) is when the UEA Convention happens, which means most of the Utah schools are out of session.

At this point, the "best" weekend in October is probably the fourth weekend. Thus far, we haven't heard of any major event happening that weekend compared to the first three weekends in the month.

I did a partial weekend trip in Oct a couple of years ago. It was packed -- to the point that we were shuffling through a sea of people in Adventureland to New Orleans Square in the evening. Wasn't a lot of fun. The weekdays were great though.

Our last October trip, we started in DL on Sunday. The crowds were large but manageable. We just made sure to get there at rope drop and kept our expectations pretty low, as far as how many rides we'd be able to go on. Luckily, we also had Monday and Tuesday, which were less busy.

I agree with figment_jii's info for October.
However, it sounds like several people want to head to DLR in October and many want to avoid the crowds.
So the fourth weekend may not be as quiet as some expect.

Yeah, I don't think any of the weekends in October (or after HalloweenTime starts really) are actually quiet/empty. It's just a matter of the fourth weekend might be less busy, but as you point out, if enough people think that way, it'll be busy also.
