We were looking at a short trip the weekend of October 18th, and it looks like all of the values are booked. Obviously, I am missing something about this weekend - does anyone know what is going on?

There are some states that have a fall break at that time. For example, all schools in Minnesota are off for part of that week. We have been to WDW several times during that week in October.

Another possibility is the Gartner IT Symposium which starts on Oct 20 and takes up thousands of rooms across the property. Many attendees come in early.

You have MNSSHP in full swing and Food and WIne. 2 things that make it busy. Its also after hurricaine season, so many who don't go in September, go in October.

Scottish schools are on holiday as well so lots of visitors from the other side of the pond. We were there at that time last year - it was heaving. Nearly as busy as when we were there at New Year!

It's a combination of everything the previous posters have mentioned. We've gone to WDW around this time frame for years, as it's DD's bday on the 21st. It usually aligns with a school fall break. It used to be a great time to go, but it has slowly evolved into a very busy season.

Last year was one of the busiest/craziest ever! We had to spend one night at Pop before our ressie at the Poly. We could not find availability for that one night, and my TA watched it for months.

Good thing she turns 21 this year...we are headed to Las Vegas instead.

ETA: A clarification to a PP.... Hurricane season is still in full swing in October. We were at WDW in 2005 when Wilma made landfall. Hurricane season runs through the end of November.

Could also be the booking algorithm...shorter stays are discouraged
I don't know how those algorithms work, but we weren't looking for a one night stay "per se". We wanted 5 nights at Poly, but only 4 were available. TA kept working to add the extra night, but it never happened. I also called WDW line multiple times to modify the existing reservation.
The Poly was just that busy, so we stayed the one night at Pop and transferred our stuff early the next morning on our way to the parks.
