October 15, 2005 anyone?

Our group from Denver is getting larger and now we have a total of 22 cruisers!!!

Well, they aren't part of your group, but there will be two more from the Denver area! My husband lived in Colorado Springs through Intermediate and High School, then went to College in Durango.

My best friend's husband (the ywill also be on the cruise) lived all his life in the Denver area (Parker).

Of course, they are both displaced in the South currently, but planning to move back eventually!

Hi Everyone!

Greetings from Massachusetts. We'll be cruising right along with you in October and can't wait. For the four of us (me, DH, DD-7, and DS-almost 2) this will be our second cruise (the first was in January). My parents, father-in-law, and my cousin and her husband will be joining us this time. We keep telling them how much they will LOVE it. We are going down the day before and staying four days later at one of the vacation club resorts. I can't wait!!!!

Hey welcome!

Glad you all will be joining us. I think the DIS is taking over the ship!

Found this on another DIS thread.
Very interesting and I thought worth passing on. :sad2:

Strange St. Maarten Incident.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new A.C. Wathey Pier and Port Facility is very nice with one unfortunate exception. There is a business in the largest of the new buildings called "Duty Free World" that I would caution you to avoid.

After returning our rental car we made one last Tee-shirt run in this store. Big mistake. My DS was to turn 7 on the ship the next day and earlier we had indulged him with a few small gifts. Among these was a wooden segmented snake that he was quite fond of. The store owner and what I assume were several of his family members took an interest in the snake and my son let them examine it. Being a new store they were curious what items were popular sellers in other stores.

While the DW selected Tee's with my DD the DS found an inexpensive shark tooth necklace that he wanted. At some point he handed it to my DW and said the plastic cord had come out of the clasp. She gave it to me and I took it to the owner and said it had come apart. The necklace was $7.95 and your typical cheaply made, China trinket. While I was surprised when he said I had to buy it, I didn't argue and took out my Visa card. My DW realized what was happening she returned the several Tee shirts she had chosen, to the shelf.

The store owner refused the credit card and demanded cash because the purchase was under $20. I politely opened my wallet and explained that I used the last of my cash to tip the crew on the 12 Meter Challenge excursion. He reiterated cash only and I said again we simply did not have any. In retrospect, judging by his gestures, I think he was expecting me to buy the several Tee shirts as well. After several, "Cash", "Sorry I have none" round robins I even offered to add the credit card surcharge to the total and said "Unless you want to accept the credit card we have a show to catch on the boat that I don't intend to miss." and we left the store.

The owner followed us out of the store and walked up to my 6 year old son, grabbed his arm, ripped his toy snake from his hand and said "I will keep this as collateral until you pay me".

Well needless to say I wasn't exactly pleased to have my son manhandled. He was crying and my wife and I were in shock. While my son may have broken the necklace by accident it certainly was not intentional and more likely due to the quality of the item than anything my son did. He also gave the broken necklace to us and did not just put it on a shelf somewhere as many might do. Nor did I hide the event from the owner or refuse to pay for it when requested.

Well my response was to take a photo of the owner and his shop with a promise I'd share this experience with others that were headed his way.

On the 100 yard walk back to the ship I came upon two Port police officers and explained the situation to them. While the DW waited in the boarding queue. ( interesting note: All returning passengers go through security screening on the ship, metal detectors and x-rays similar to airport screening and the lines can get quite long) I went back to the shop with the officer who interviewed the owner and got essentially the same story. The officer came to me and said the owner will now accept your credit card. I explained to the officer that he had a fair chance to accept and I would not now trust such a man with my credit information. He smiled knowingly but said there was little more he could do.

I was disappointed but not surprised that he did not require the return of the birthday present snake. After restating that I would explain the event to Disney and post notice of my St. Maarten experience on the Internet I went back to the ship. I was at the top of the gangway and next in line for the x-ray when the son of the owner and the officer came running toward the ship.

The officer said he contacted the harbor's senior officer, who ordered the shop owner to return my son's property and charged the owner with assault and theft. He also relayed a request that I not post negative comments about St. Maarten on the net.

In fairness, St. Maarten was a positive excursion and they ultimately handled the situation well.

The rest you can judge for yourself. Personally I'd love to hear that someone on a later cruise went up to this shop and asked "hey are you the guys that stole a 6 year old's birthday present over a broken necklace? Well I read about you on the internet and I'm shopping elsewhere"

That would make my day.

cntkg1~ Like you, all i can say is "WOW!"
It would be interesting to hear if someone does walk into that shop on a later cruise and mentions the 6year old that had his birthday present stolen over a broken necklace. Oh, to be a fly on the wall then. :)

I just wanted to say "welcome" :wave2: to all the newcomers. The more the merrier. So welcome, to the S.S. Molar Express! :teeth:

VA mouseman. "Happy Anniversary!" Sorry to hear about the rain. :umbrella:
But like you, I can't wait to get on that boat, too! :boat: :sunny: :cloud9:

Welcome Evie and Beccastuff! :flower:

Happy Anniversary VA mouseman!

Trying again to change it to the birthday cruise, all these dental problems are making me nervous. I guess I'll just avoid the dentist until after the cruise. What I don't know, won't hurt me!

The weather is slowly warming up here. I'm ready for summer! (closer to cruising!) Hope everyone has a great week!

Sara

I almost hate shopping out of the country... :guilty: I won't do it in Cozumel ever again!!!
I did enjoy Key West, but that is the US. I don't know if I will shop much at all on this cruise. Probably just the ship and Castaway Cay. ::MickeyMo

I am up for this being the Birthday cruise even though it is none of our Birthdays. ALthough it is a month after mine and Gary's....Maybe that counts.
Definetly don't want anymore dental work.

I went ahead and called WDW and upgraded to the Savanah view for our AKL last minute trip in May. I figured if we will be at the AKL we need to have Savanah. They gave me a discounted rate of $160. Not bad??? :cloud9: I did not tell Mom or DD that I did this. It is a surprise and I will pay the extra.

Not much else going on..Just rain and chilly....... :umbrella:
Atleast everything is green and pretty now. :flower:

Talk to everyone later. :wave2:

I heard a rumor that MNSSHP tickets go on sale May 1. For those of you waiting, one more event to get excited about! The kids and I went last year and had a blast. Won't work out this year. :guilty: They will be missing too much school already. :rolleyes1

Hope everyone has a good weekend! We are trying to stay warm!!! :confused3 I thought it was spring.

Sara

I heard a rumor that MNSSHP tickets go on sale May 1.
That was the rumor through yesterday afternoon. Then without any great fanfare or announcement, they apparently went on sale last night! I just called a few minutes ago and purchased our MNSSHP tickets for 10/13. We will just be arriving at SSR the afternoon of the 13th, so we won't have much in the way of down time, but it should be a really great way to start our vacation!

I also booked a priority seating at Liberty Tree Tavern that evening...For some reason they allow you to book an LTT PS when purchasing MNSSHP tickets even outside of the 90-day window. However, many of their CMs don't seem to know about this special policy. The one I purchased my tickets from insisted I could not book the LTT seating yet. He put me on hold...After coming back, he had asked "everyone around him" and they all said it couldn't be done. I insisted that people had been booking it, and asked him to check his system for "special events" or something like that. I heard the light bulb come on  and a minute or two later I had my reservation.

There are similar stories of misinformation, multiple callbacks, and general frustration all over the Theme Parks board.

The CM apologized for his initial misinformation, and was certainly doing his best to figure things out, but you've got to wonder why Disney can't do a better job of updating its Cast Members for special events like this. For that matter, Disney hasn't even told the general public. It was only through the DIS that I found out that tickets were on sale today, that LTT bookings were possible, etc.

Oh, well, I'm just excited to have the arrangements made for our first MNSSHP! :hyper: ::yes::

I just called to see if any they had a party for the 14th and they don't. :sad2:

If we get a flight in to Orlando by 5:00 would you still do the party on the 13th?? I know they say it starts at 7:00,but you can get in earlier cause we did the first time??

What should I do? Even if we got there at 7:00 we have till midnight to have fun????

How much are the tickets this year??? I would love to do the party on Thursday night and then have Friday to kick back at the resort??? :goodvibes

Guess I will wait till I get my flights to decide? May 24th we arrive at MCO at 5:25 and so I will see how long it takes us to get to our resort?? Then I can kind of judge?

Glad you are all set!

If we get a flight in to Orlando by 5:00 would you still do the party on the 13th??
I don't know...That's a tough call. If you take the southern exit from the airport and go via 417, then you can probably be there in 30-40 minutes. Of course, then you would probably want to check-in and claim your room, even if you just left your stuff in the car or with bell services. Then you would have to allow time to catch a bus to the MK. All told, I would guess you would need about an hour-and-a-half from leaving the airport to arriving at the MK. You could shave a half-hour off of that by going straight to the MK, but then you would end up claiming your room around midnight.

Of course, the above discussion assumes you are renting a car...I believe that you said earlier in the thread that you are, yes?

You would also have to allow time to claim your baggage, and pick up your rental. Depending on onsite vs. offsite rental, that entire process could easily add another 30-45 minutes to the formula. So, it sounds like from arriving at the gate until hitting the turnstiles, you would probably need somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 to 2 and-a-half hours.
I know they say it starts at 7:00,but you can get in earlier cause we did the first time??
I've read many posts over on the Theme Parks board talking about getting in as early as 4:00. We have a 5:35 seating at Liberty Tree Tavern, so we are hoping to get to be at the turnstiles by 5:00. (We are driving...My *plan* is to get to SSR by about 3:00. Then depending on whether our room is ready, we will decide how quickly to move towards MK.)
Even if we got there at 7:00 we have till midnight to have fun????
Yes...If it is as fun as everyone says it is, it might still be worth it! And being on a Thursday night in the first half of the month, hopefully the crowds will be manageable, allowing you to do more in a shorter span of time. Do you think your daughter can handle being out that late? Maybe she could nap on the plane? (I would :rotfl: if someone suggested one of my kids would nap on a plane! :teeth: )
How much are the tickets this year???
$37.23 for adults and $29.77 for ages 3-9.
I would love to do the party on Thursday night and then have Friday to kick back at the resort???
That's our plan. I know Thursday will be a bit hectic, but Friday I think we are just going to go to Typhoon Lagoon. It will probably not even open until 10:00, so we will not have to start early, and it should be a pretty relaxing day.

Good luck with your decision! :earsboy:

I could book an earlier fight and get DD out of school early that day?? She is missing 2 1/2 days for this trip. If I took her out early that would make a total of 3 days for a 10 day trip??? :confused3 That is really not that bad?
She is an excellent student and they never give the Elementary kids any homework on those short weeks. :goodvibes

I will have to think about it. That party won't sell out like the ones closer to Halloween and so I may just play it by ear and see what kind of flights I can get on Southwest.
We are renting a car and so that will be no problem, but I would like to get checked in. We are going to live out of our carry on luggage at the resorts. The big suitcases will stay in the trunk till our cruise. :rotfl:

Thanks for all the great info. If we don't do the party then we will do MK on Friday.

It would be cheaper to do the party too... I loved it last time we went on Halloween night and it was even sold out. This one would be even better and less crowds. :grouphug:

DH and I went to MNSSHP last year on a Wedneday before the cruise - didn't get there until 8:30PM because we were at the ESPN club drinking beer and watching the Cardinals kick the Astros in game 6 of the NLCS. We were amazed at how few people were there and we had a blast (stayed until the park closed). Some of the CMs told us that a lot of people show up early wait through the fireworks & first parade and then leave. Of course, we don't have kids so it's easier for us to go later, but it's just a thought.

Also, the night before we left for our 7-night last year we were over at EPCOT until after the fireworks show that night and then we hung out on the Boardwalk for a bit. We had a car pick us up Saturday morning about 10:00AM. Didn't feel tired at all the next day - too hyped up I guess!

I think you should go for it - you've got the crusie to relax and how often do you get to go to Mickey's Halloween bash?

In the big scheme of things, does that extra half-day really make a difference? Especially for an elementary-school-age child?

I hate to be a "bad influence" on you :earboy2: , and I know this is the subject of occasional flame wars here on the DISBoards, but here is how I look at it:

I'm pulling out all three of mine, two in elementary (K and 4th), and one in middle (7th) for longer than that. I don't think it will have any effect on the two in elementary school (and I know their teachers/administrators don't mind), but I did worry a bit more about the 7th grader. I don't really worry about him, per se, as he is an excellent student, but I do worry that his teachers will frown a bit. Ultimately though I look at it this way: We spend the vast majority of the year putting plenty of emphasis and priorities on work and school. This is a special time to enjoy with my family. You never know what tomorrow will bring, and this vacation represents a great opportunity for quality time and the building of memories that will last a lifetime. At the end of the day, their educations will not really suffer any more than the computer company I work for suffers from the absence of my "expert guidance" for a few days. :badpc: :teeth:

Go with your heart. Your daughter may always be your baby, but she will only be a little girl for so long (says the dad with his own 5-year-old princess princess: ).

As always, good luck with your decision! :earsboy:

I do agree that you only live once and they are only little for a short time. Our school has always been ok when I have pulled her out for family trips in the past. :goodvibes

The thing is I can not afford to go in the Summer and so I have to plan around short weeks of school in the Fall. The way Disney is raising their prices I just don't know how many more cruises I can fit into my budget.

Sam, You are so right. What does another half day matter. It is the end of 1st Quarter and so a no homework week we will miss. I just think Family time is important and look how much of a life experience this trip will be. That is how her Teacher's have always looked at it. Hopefully the 2nd grade Teacher will feel the same way. It really can be a learning experience with the different cultures that we experience on the Islands. Ok Ok I have talked my self into it. :rotfl:

I probably will book an earlier flight on Thursday so we can to the Party!! pirate: Your right Brenda!! How often do we get to go to Mickey's Halloween bash!! I have to see the Headless Horseman!!

Thanks guys! :teeth:

Michelle,
I agree with Brenda and Sam. I say go for it!!! In my "most exalted" opinion. :) Family time is by far more important. (not that school isn't.) But, as the commercial goes...

Airline ticket $...
Disney cruise $...
MNSSHP $...
Creating memories with your daughter...PRICELESS. :earsgirl: ::MinnieMo :earsboy:

Sorry, I just had to add that in.

That's it! I'm reporting you to the authorities for taking your kid out of blah blah boring school to have a blast with family at the House of Mouse. Geeesh how could you!? let's see what other legalistic, goofy things do they say?? Spare the schooling spoil the child? You're causing the school district to lose money?? 9 out of 10 kids prefer school when given the choice between school and a dental visit??

I think Saint Nike (or was it Pope Nike IV?) said it best when he said: Just do it! :rotfl2:

guess what I'm saying in the silliest way possible is.... life is short, play hard!

later,
Paul

I'll be repetitive and say we're hoping to be down on Friday AM and stay the night at the Courtyard by Marriott by the Airport... no come on Southwest!!! Open those dates!! Ding me!

Hi all! Just wanted to add three more to the list of October 15th cruisers - me, DH and DS. DS will be 18 months old when we set sail. It is our first cruise and first vacation with DS (I don't count trips to see family as vacation). I am amazed by how totally obsessed I have become with this cruise! I CANNOT WAIT!!! Of course, it doesn't help my impatience that the last day of the cruise will be my birthday, and I just love birthdays...

Has anyone cruised with infants/toddlers before? If so, what was your experience with Flounder's Reef? Any tips, particularly on what to pack for a toddler, would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome pearlandpaige!

I can't help you w/ travelling w/ a toddler. My 3 kids were a little older (3, 7, & 9) when we went on DCL last October. But, there are some here that have travelled w/ a toddler and I'm sure would love to give you all the do's & dont's. Glad that you could join us. :)

OMG :earseek: , I can't believe how many pages this thread is up to.
My computer has been down for months, but now I'm back! :wave2:
I think I had better print each page off and get caught up.
Have I missed anything exciting?
Well, I've been upgraded to room 7118 that opens room 7120 and the cruise is all paid off.
I can't chat long I just wanted to pop in and say "Hi" to everyone and welcome the all the new travelers. I had better get caught up on reading... :rotfl: I think it's going to take me awhile.
It's good to be back!
