The Satellite series is the good basic workhorse computer. Good basic computers for the money..

Dell has awsome prices. We use Lenovo at work, it's a corporate account, IBM and either is are good. We bought the last year model with our laptops. Mind has a dual layer dvd burner, which is great however the chances of me ever using are slim to none! If you visit the Dell web site, in the States you can go on the Dell auctions, they have some killer deals there.

Oops I forgot to add...
We bought Nancy a gateway, nice laptop. Mine is a Toshiba. Since both of them were the previous years models we paid around 600 each. This is not a salepitch but Nancy will attest to this, I am a clutz. My old Toshiba has had more coffee, water, pop, beer spilt on it. It was normal to see it unplugged and apart drying out. The thing has never let me down. OK I lied, I was in the middle of doing our taxes when the harddrive quit but the laptop was about 8 years old. I only got rid of it because it had a 13 inch screen and Josh couldn't see the full screen when he was playing his games, other than that it still worked fine, if you can imagine running windows XP on a celeron 366 with 192 megs of ram! I bought another Toshiba without a second thought

I had to dissable a few things...system restore for starters LOL. As long as I cleared the history and cache every few days it was actually quite stable.
