My DH was just promoted after being in the same position for 8 years at a major corporation. He is now going to be entry level management which is great because due to his 12 hour swing schedule is never able to go back to school. The question that I have is, how long would you stay in a position to gain experience before you start asking for a transfer to another location.
This is a great opportunity for him but we have wanted to move from this area for about 5 years now and I feel that we were just denied parole. I am patient but wondering how many years experience in management level does one need before moving on. Please dont flame...Im not suggesting he up and leave the company...just a transfer to different location.

That really depends on his companies policy. Most companies I've worked for require you to be in your position for at least 1 year before transferring.

Good luck to your dh.

I would observe what has happened to other entry level managers. Sometimes this position is like a proving ground...seeing what he can do, and willing to take, and then the company might make a decision to transfer. See if he can talk to other mgrs that are 2 years after their entry level position, were they moved up?, offered other opportunities? etc. I think 2 years would be the max to wait, but I have seen companies move people after 6 months too. If the back to school thing is the issue, has he ever considered taking courses online ...perhaps that might work in better with his schedule, and can be portable if he does get a transfer in a year or two. Good luck

I would have him check the promotion policy at his company. One thing that might help is making sure his superiors know that he is willing to transfer. Once he is in the new position for a while, he might want to sit down with his supervisor and discuss how he is doing in the new position and career goals. That would be a good opportunity to let the company know he wants to stay with the company but at the same time move to where advancement opportunities are at. He might get an opportunity to move sooner if there is a location opening that they have difficulty filling. My company requires that you stay in a position 6 months unless approved by a superior.
