Obscure local/regional/national holidays...

not sure why cuz I’ve worked for a few of them and it wasn't when I was there. It is a state holiday with the courthouses in the counties being closed, but the counties are not. I will say that for people who had to go to court, that was the only day the offices could have countywide meetings...cuz they were open and the courts were not.
Those County's websites all say they are closed for Cesar Chavez Day.

Yes! This is one that when I was school we celebrated. Some club would sell carnations for I think $1 at lunch. It seemed big at the time but it really wasn't. Now that I am older it just gives me an excuse to get my favorite chocolate covered strawberries.

Did the same in high school but for Valentine's Day.

For a native Texan like myself it's not obscure but probably no one else cares about it but April 21 is San Jacinto Day which is the anniversary of The Republic of Texas' victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto. It is also Aggie Muster Day which is a big tradition for A & M.

One that find really obscure is Dyngus day in Buffalo. I don't think any other part of the country celebrates it outside of there.

My Polish-American neighborhood in Philadelphia used to celebrate it years ago, but I’m not sure if they still do.

For those unfamiliar, It’s the day after Easter, an end of Lent celebration. Our Catholic school was closed on Easter Monday.

I checked with my friends working for Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Neither county has it has a holiday which they are closed for. It's not in their union contracts either.

I kind of thought that having Easter Monday off wasn't that uncommon. Where we live, all the schools get it off-it's a border community, about 90% Hispanic, most of whom have family in Mexico whom they visit (don't know if they'll be able to this coming Easter). And the week after Easter is Semana Santa, a holiday week where many Mexicans come over to the US.

Not aware of any holidays like that here, but I grew up in South GA, and there were a couple that our school recognized
First day of deer season (yep). I didn't and don't hunt, but if deer season fell on a weekday, it was an excused absence. Lol.
There is a huge Ag Expo every year, and if a student attends, it is an excused absence, so pretty much every kid goes.

I took my middle guy there last year, and he had the best time ever, climbing on tractors, and getting all the free stuff they hand out. Had planned to return this year with all the kids, but it was canceled.

In Illinois Casimir Pulaski Day, first Monday in March (since 1977).

He was "a Revolutionary War cavalry officer born in Poland as Kazimierz Pułaski. He is praised for his contributions to the U.S. military in the American Revolution and known as "the father of the American cavalry". " (Wikipedia)

At first all Illinois schools had the day off (I believe), but in the past some districts (ours included) have petitioned the state to not close on the holiday.

My kids' district did have it off about 10 years ago because the district forgot to file their petition.

I believe there were some actual celebrations in the Chicago area (large Polish population), but not really anywhere else. Just a day the State offices and schools were closed.

I lived in Illinois for a long time and I just assumed everybody knew about Casimir Pulaski day. I mentioned it to others and they had no idea what I was talking about.

To be counted for attending school in Texas you have to be at school at 10:00 AM. Just the way it works as that is official time for daily attendance. While there is no holiday for the start of deer season it always starts on the first Saturday of November and on the Friday before there is always a long line of parents waiting in line before 10 to take their kids out of school. My wife was a registrar/ attendance clerk at a Middle school for years and other than the first day of school it was the busiest day of the year for her.

Why did they need the day before off? To travel to hunting area?

Our district didn't participate, but I know some districts in the outlying more rural areas would have a Teacher Institute on the Friday that started either Youth Deer Hunting or regular Deer Hunting Season. They found that so many kids were gone that it wasn't worth holding school, so they just made it a TI.

Basically. They wanted to get to the lease/ hunting area and get set up for the next morning. Remember it's Texas which means depending on where you hunt vs where you live can be a 7 hour drive.

In Calgary we have an annual occasion called "Neighbour Day". It is in commemoration of the devastating floods that unexpectedly destroyed a good portion of our city in 2013. There were over 100,000 people displaced in the span of hours. Our entire city came together to provide for one another and clean up the wreckage so that restoration could begin. Armies of citizens worked around the clock for weeks - it was a strange yet extremely touching time.

Neighbour Day takes place on the Saturday closest to June 20. It's not a work/bank holiday but instead is a day of community events with a focus on volunteering and recognizing the good works (big and small) done by volunteers over the previous year. :goodvibes

Semana Santa
Semana Santa is Holy week and is the biggest celebration here in Honduras the week leading up to Easter. It starts that Wed at noon officially (when banks and schools close) but government offices are closed the whole week. Everyone that is able, spends the week near water. The beach or setting up tents along a river or spring. If you can't leave the city, you still dress like you would at the beach.
Local legend says you can not shower during this time or you will turn into a mermaid. Can not find any more details on the history of that but it only seems to be a country thing as those from the cities have not heard this myth.

 That doesn't sound like such a bad option right now - I'd be tempted to try it.

I live in Spain. There's a local/regional/national celebration at least twice every month! 💃💃🥂🥂🇪🇦
Traveling for work in Europe was always nice, because we'd get a "day off" quite often for some holiday. :-)
