Just curious as to what age children stop taking naps :confused3, my ds is 4 and it seems to be hit or miss, maybe napping 3 out of 7 days. Is this around the age they stop?

One of mine never napped, yes really ! the other stopped at about 2 1/2.

Hasn't napped regularly since he was about 2.5
Now the only time he ever "naps" is if he falls asleep in the car, and then he's up FOREVER at night (at least an extra hour +).
I miss those nap days...

Mine still naps everyday and she is 3.5. She goes to bed later though (around 9:00). We had a period for about a month where it was hit and miss... 4 days a week or so.

I think seems about right for time to stop (all things depending on the child).. :)

I've never stopped!...really whenever they want to. Every kid is different. Usually by school age when they have to stop, they do.

I try to keep them napping until at least 5. They don't always sleep but more often than not (I would have them go into their room for quiet time if it was borderline & 1/2 the time they would end up being asleep!).

My 7 year old was the one that gave it up earlier but that's because he was in afternoon preschool....so by the time he was 4 he had adjusted (when he was 3, he would fall asleep on the bus).

I have a friend though who's kids stopped napping at about 2-3, it all depends on the child.

mine napped till about 4yo i think. i know many who stopped at 2yo, and many who went till 5yo. so yours seems to be right in the average age.

My first two needed their naps and napped daily until kindergarten. My youngest hated naping, but I made her lay down anyway. I needed the break and I think kids need some downtime. She just turned 6 and I had her take a couple of naps here and there this summer so far. With her staying up later it catches up to her and she needs the extra rest. She hates it when I tell her she's going down, but she falls right to sleep and actually thanks me for it.

Mine usually 3-4. They went to preschool at 3. Which has a "quiet time" where the kids had to lay quietly on their nap cot. My my (now) 6 year old didn't sleep, but layed quietl. The rest napped. They are in full day pre K at 4 so there is no more napping. (but they are in bed early! :cheer2: )

DD just turned 4 in the end of June. She told me that she's a big girl now and doesn't need to nap anymore. I told her that was fine, after her birthday we'd stop.

She is now a big girl who falls asleep on the couch 6 days out of 7 for about an hour in the afternoon:rotfl2:

My DD turns 8 today... she still naps sometimes... so does my DH who is 33. DD4 naps at preschool, but almost never at home.

Mine still nap. Oldest is 4.5 and it's a little hit and miss. Now that he's been staying up later he naps most days. He does PreK this year and they do nap time every day...so I'll be keeping it up until he's finished w/ this school year and then no more naps.

My youngest will be 3 in a month and it's extremely rare for him to skip a nap. But he's very active and wears himself out.

We had an 8 year old at the daycare who asked to go to the preschool classroom for naptime so he could sleep.

My older dd, who will be 5 in September, still naps occasionally; last week we were at the beach and swam and played in the ocean all morning, and stayed up late at night playing games on the boardwalk and getting ice cream, so she napped for at least an hour, sometimes 2, every day. But that's the exception. She stopped napping regularly right around 3, but she was going to p.m. preschool twice a week and that really got her out of the routine. I think she would have continued longer if that hadn't been the case.

I gave up "enforcing" it when it would take her an hour or more to fall asleep each day at naptime, and she was staying up on days she napped until after 9 pm. Some days, I would put her down for nap at 1, and she'd fall asleep at almost 3! Then, she would sleep until I woke her at 4:30 or 5 and bed time would be late in coming. That seemed less than ideal. Now, most days, since she doesn't nap, she's usually asleep before 8 and up at around 7, which gives her the 11 hours of sleep they say is recommended for her age. From time to time when I know she is tired or has a late night ahead of her I will ask her to rest in her bed for awhile; on rare occasions, she will tell me she wants to nap and get into bed and fall asleep!

My younger dd, who will be 3 in October, shows no signs of giving up her daily 2 hour nap. She can miss a nap when I need her to for some reason without completely falling apart, but she tends to make up for it the next day with a longer nap, later morning, etc.

I guess he seems right on course then, I think it will be great come Disney World time in November , but, I don't think its very good for his daycare/school teacher . Thanks for all the great replies :flower3:

 :headache:

DD napped through kindergarten. The first few weeks of 1st grade were tough on her. She'd come home from school and fall asleep for an hour or 2 before dinner and then go to bed at 8pm and sleep until 7am. She's always been a good sleeper though.

I think most kids typically stop around age 4 if not before.

Yeah, its totally child dependant.

My 6yo will still nap on an only VERY rare occasion. But it just now started. IN Kindergarten they napped daily and she was always the 1st out and last to wake, I thought this summer (with camp) and 1st grade would be tough, but she's adjusted on her own.

Until this summer, she'd been a napper.
