Hi,

Can anyone reccomend a city/town that has a train into NYC? I would like o take my family there for a few nights, but the cost of staying within the city is tremendous.

Alternatively, can you reccommend a safe hotel that is close to public transportation?

Thanks in advance,

We stayed at the Elizabeth Marriott. We took the bus in one day from the Jersey Gardens outlet mall, it was $6.50 each way. The only problem is if you want to stay in NYC late at night, it is horrendous to get back to the hotel. We took the bus one night then the train the next night. You have to catch either from 2 different stations then go to Newark Airport and catch the Airport shuttle back to the hotel. To take a Taxi from Newark Airport to area hotel is $20 to $25 each way!!! We took a car service in one day and it was $85 one way plus tolls of $8. It took far too long to drive in!
Pay the extra and stay in NYC!!!:cool2:

We stayed at Hyatt Place Secaucus, NJ and we took the 320 into NYC most days. We had our van and we took it into the city as well and paid the tunnel toll ($8) and found free parking on the street. I cannot recall the exact pricing for the bus but it might have been around $14 return for 4 of us. The port authority website would have more info but you may not be interested in NJ at all.

Staying in New Jersey near the Lincoln Tunnel is a great option. There are a number of hotels in the area (Sheraton, Holiday Inn Express) and you can take the ferry over to NYC. I haven't done it yet but some friends have and they said they would never stay in NYC again. I believe they said the Holiday Inn express was around $100 per night compaired to almost $300 in NYC. To find the hotels just google "hotels near Lincoln Tunnel, New Jersey" and you will be able to get a list.

Two Words. Jersey City. we stayed there in May. they have a subway system called PATH that takes you to Times Square or World Trade Centre in under 10 minutes. We couldn't believe how quick it was. We stayed at the Double Tree Jersey City which is a block from the PATH train. from the time we left our hotel to the time we hit Times Square was under 15 minutes. the hotel was $160 per night. you can get to the statue of Liberty from Jersey as well by taking the New Jersey transit system, but we found it took pretty long. plus you stop at Ellis island before the statue. on the way to NYC from the statue you stop at Ellis Island. so its almost better to do it in reverse. you have to get your tickets first thing in the morning as well as they only let a certain number of people up the monument per day. we didn't get to go up unfortunately and we were there at 11am. But it was a Saturday. NYC subway system is amazing, very easy to get around. Just ask the ticket taker which train to

I just want to add our first choice was Jersey City but we decdedd to do a 5 day NYC trip with only 10 days to plan before we left. All the Jersey City hotels were booked. Next time I plan to stay there because of the PATH access and because I may leave DH at home so it would be easier to get around. I won't drive in NYC but it is great that DH doesn't mind ;)
