to help with treating ear infections or sinus infections? What have your outcomes been? I am really trying to not do antibiotics. (please don't bash me). Thankfully right now no one has any infections right now, I am just trying to prepare my herbal medicine cabinet. I have loofa for my sons allergies, but right now his eyes are watery so I was also wondering about the proper usage for CS in eyes to help with itching and wateryness (is that a word :confused3 )

TIA

isn't that the stuff that made the guy turn blue on Oprah? I can't help you out... I applaud your trying to stay off the antibiotics- Good Luck!
:thumbsup2

yes, apparantly if you take it every day you can turn blue. I believe the guy on Oprah drank a tincture of it daily. He is healthy, just blue. :rotfl:
but if you use it for treatment you won't turn blue.

Thats the stuff that turned that guy blue. Personally, I'd rather risk the very occasional antibiotic over the possibility of turning my child blue.;)

Haven't tried it, so I can't say for sure . . . but, just thinking about it, I'm not sure how it could help an ear infection (and I say that genuinely, as a fan of homeopathics). Only because an ear infection is behind the ear drum, and anything 'dropped' inside wouldn't actually get to the source of the infection (unless the ear drum had burst). Just my $0.02 - either way I hope you find relief!

I have used it for swimmer's ear, which is a fungul infection instead of bacterial, and it worked wonderfully. I have also used it for pink eye and it worked great for that, as well. It is the only thing we use on cuts, because my daughter is allergic to neosporin, bacitracin, etc. None of us has had an ear infection in a long time, but I would sure try it if we did.

the thing is...people are not supposed to be blue...so the blue man isn't necessarily "healthy". You have to be careful with that sort of thing.

at least w/ anti biotics you know what kinds of risks you are dealing with.

I'm not a big fan of antibiotics either! I hear ya sister!!

We've not used it for ear infections. Most are viral, rather than bacterial in nature.

I've used it for my cat's urinary tract infections several times, though.

We don't do antibiotics, unless absolutely necessary. It has been 4 or 5 years since we last had someone on them. I spent much of my kidhood on antibiotics, and am immune to most.

I try to avoid antibiotics as well, but if I absolutely need them then I take them. I just take a lot of probiotic afterwards!

I would be interested to know if does work for you.

Ear infections are NOT viral!!! They are caused by bacteria in fluid behind the ear drum. They may come as a side effect of a viral illness like a cold or flu, but that is just the source of the fluid. The bacteria are the cause of the inflamationv and pain. I really caution anyone treating ear infection with herbal remedies. They can quickly lead to ruptured ear drums, scarring and hearing loss. DD had multiple ear infections as an infant. Her fluid buildup was due to food allergies and one we figured out that she was allergic to both milk and soy we fixed it with a corn based formula, but had she not been treated with antibiotics in the mean time she could be stuck with hearing loss. Please be careful!!!!! Herbal remidies like collodial silver are iffy at best for a true ear infection.

Antibiotics are no longer routinely prescribed for acute otitis media. Doctors and parents are giving careful consideration before treating ear infections with antibiotics. Evidence has been building over the years showing most ear infections resolve on their own and antibiotics do little or nothing to speed the process. And, overuse of antibiotics leads to antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. The most important factor in treatment for ear infections is pain relief.

Do you know the source of the infections?

DD developed ear infections when we started cow's milk based products. I stopped all dairy, they went away, and never came back. She is now able to do dairy, but prefers to drink water over milk. She does do yogurt, cheese, and ice cream/whip cream.

Today she had her 7 year checkup, and our Dr. declared her "perfect"! She weighs 40 lbs. and is 48" tall, healthy as a horse! (She's always been tiny, and we've been with this Dr. since she was about 2 months old)

You might also spend some $$ on a homeopathic md or chiropractor. I have had good luck with Loomis enzymes, but you have to use a practioner to get them, they aren't available online.

I have read the Mayo clinic info and it says that while antibiotis are not always indicated

"Acute otitis media (AOM). Fluid in the middle ear creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth, and occasionally the fluid becomes infected. This condition is then known as acute otitis media. The pressure from the infected fluid pushes against the eardrum, causing pain. Some children have recurrent ear infections, or an infection that won't resolve. A child whose ear infections clear up only to come back again within a few weeks has recurrent otitis media. Doctors usually define this as three or more ear infections within a three- to six-month period. " and

"Still, it's important to consult your child's doctor if you think your child's hearing may be affected. "

"What's best for your child depends on many factors, including:

The diagnosis and severity of the infection
How often your child has ear infections
How long your child has had this ear infection
Your child's age
Which risk factors your child may have
Whether your child has any underlying health issues
Whether the infection affects your child's hearing. Hearing is temporarily affected with any otitis because the fluid in the middle ear impedes the vibration of the ear ossicles. "

The American Academy of Pediatrics says that providing pain relief while watching your child's symptoms for two or three days is a reasonable option for most kids over 6 months of age. If symptoms haven't improved after that time, your doctor may want to recheck your child's ears and prescribe an antibiotic at that time"

These are the type infections DD had and the Ped. said the CAN lead to hearing loss.

I never indicated that there wasn't the possiblility of hearing loss. That doesn't mean that alternative methods are evil, however. They do not lead to ruptured eardrums, etc. If you want to treat your child willy nilly with antibiotics, have ant it.

I NEVER said alternative methods were evil!!!!!! I simply siad that caution was called for in using them. If ear infections do not resolve on their own within a few days antibotics may be needed to prevent serious damage. I know this first had as my DD almost ruptured an eardrum the first time she had an infection. I did not want to give her antibiotics and I learned my lesson. As soon as we started the antibiotics her drum lost the inflamation within 12 hours. I am simply trying to warn people that there is a time when antibiotics are warranted. I gurantee you that if you are your child are ever forced to undergo major surgery you will not think antibiotics are silly. Before their use the death rate frim post surgurical infection was around 20% even with sanitation tecniques in place. So if you ever need invasive surgery it is use antibiotics or take a 20% risk of death!
