I got nominated to attend the NYLSC (national Youth Leadership State Conference)by my social studies teacher at school!!He elected my out of a group of students from my school with academic achievement, and leadership potential, he selected me with the maturity, responsibility, and scholastic merit to represent my state! I dont know much else about it other than what i told you guys and that its a four day conference and most of the former distuingished speakers worked at the white house ranging from former vice president or a white house correspondent!! Also it will cost a little under $1500!! =l It says you can do fundraisers for it so if you know of any that will bring in some $$$ if I did it like on a Saturday PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!

If any of you guys have gone to one please tell your story i would like to know what you thought of it!! and if you would go again!!

Thanks in advance sorry its long!!

Anybody ever even heard of it?? or the NYLC (National Youth Leadership Conference??? or do you know anyone who went to them????

Ooooh I've been! I went my eighth grade year, which makes that... four whole years ago. Wow I'm getting old...
First of all, it was a TOTAL BLAST. I met a ton of people there who cared about the same things I do: who gets elected in office and what that means for our generation, the environment, respecting others' opinions, helping people, etc. In fact, I still keep in touch with a friend I made there!
Second, NYLSC taught me a lot about myself. It taught me how to be a better leader, listen to other people more, and incorporate everyone's opinions to solve problems. It made me SUCH a better person, and made me realize what my morals are.
NYLSC is three exhausting days of fun. We had workshops, student-lead workshops (which ranged from controversial topics such as abortion and gay rights to topics like acting and the NBA), dinners, talent shows, a dance... ohmygoodness. It sounds sort of boring, but I learned a lot in a fun environment with people like me- who wanted to be there to learn how to make a difference.
The whole lot of us were divided into groups whose names were that of international bodies of water (I was in Rio Grande, but there were also groups like the Great Lakes, Ganges, Red Sea...). We stayed with our group for all the workshops. In our groups, we did a lot of team-building activities that involved certain people taking charge at different points. There was one exercise we did where we had to partner up and decide who was partner A and partner B. All the A's were given a real-world problem to solve as a group while the B's critiqued their partner's input to the discussion. It was very eye-opening.
As far as fundraising goes, good luck! I sent out 46 letters to businesses near my hometown and all said they either couldn't because of security reasons or wouldn't financially help me out. I got my grandfather to pay for a lot of it, thankfully.
You'll want to dress nicely- guys wore Dockers and polos, girls wore either dress pants and blouses or skirts and blouses. Bring a notebook and a pen. You'll want to bring around a small bag, because your group leaders will give you stuff throughout the day.
If you have any other questions, I'll be checking the forum often :)

I was hoping someone on here went or had heard of it before!! It sounds SUPER fun by how u described it!! Does it help u pay to get into college or have anything to do with getting in to college?? My mom brought this up when i as talking to her the other day about it and I didnt know and since I just read your post and u were there 4 years ago i thought u might know since u would b a senior or about!!

thanks again!! If i have any questions i will let u know!! Thanks!!

HI! I am SuperSequin's mom and just happened to find your post, although she had told me about it. It was financially challenging for us to send her but I think it was worth every penny. SS really gained self-confidence and insight from this experience. She is an excellent student anyhow, but I know having this on her resume has helped with being named to national student honor groups as well as being accepted into National HOnor Society. We are just starting the college application process, but of course we will be listing NYLC in her app package. It really was worth it, IMHO. HTH.

Thanks!! that helped with some of my questions!!

if i go it will be financailly hard for us to pay my way in do it also!!

thanks again!!

Hi Mom :)

Yeah, it was a bit hard for us to pay for, but the experience was so worth it, my parents didn't mind paying for it. It looks SO good on college applications too! :thumbsup2
Be sure to post something, update us with how the fundraising is going, etc. Once you've gone, I'd love to hear your experiences!

I was nominated to go pretty much every year in high school - I got letters in the mail from them multiple times during my time in HS. Of course, so did all of my friends and pretty much all of the decent students at my school. I don't know of anyone who ever went, but it sounds like it could be fun.

okay so....My mom is entering me to see if i can get a scholarship to go that way it doesnt cost so much out of my parents pocket and i was wondering if anyone has done the essay part of the scholarship before??
