NYC transit help

What's the best way to get from the Port Authority terminal to shopping on Canal Street? There are 9 of us going on Friday and I think that the cost of taxis would be a little expensive. If I bought an all-day pass, what bus or subway should we take? I've searched the CB for NYC posts and I think we'll follow the plan of another DISer by starting at Canal Street and then working our way back to Times Square. I just don't want to waste time starting our journey! Thanks.

Take the downtown A-C-E (Blue) Train to Canal street, and you are there. Couldn't be easier.
