NYC Live Trip Report.....NOW WITH PHOTOS!!

It's going to be a hot, sticky next few days here! We are looking forward to seeing you guys on Sunday. Tony's DiNapoli may not be an authentic Italian restuarant alike ones down in Little Italy, it was chosen because of its location and reccomendations from other people. Especially since you are seeing Shrek that afternoon, it was easier to just stay within that area.

Now if you wanted real authentic Italian food, you would have had to come to my house, and since you don't have a rental car and can't get out to LI, we will have to come to you :upsidedow

Have a great time buddy. I work in the city so do NOT...I repeat...do NOT embarass me while you're there! Hi Tamra. :goodvibes

The boss of us has spoken.

I do believe Paul will leave WDW to take care of you if you screw up so don't :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Wow sounds like fun Don! Have a great time!
I can't wait to read about your trip. :goodvibes

Your plans sound great, Don. Are you cruising around the Statue of Liberty or also getting off at Liberty Island? The Crown is open now, but I understand it's pretty hard to get tickets for that unless you book way in advance.

Have a wonderful trip!

We are going onto Liberty Island and Ellis Island on Monday.

Have a great time buddy. I work in the city so do NOT...I repeat...do NOT embarass me while you're there! Hi Tamra. :goodvibes

Whoops...I didn't read this in time :rolleyes1

So, we spent some time in central park and lots of shopping. Couple hours in the morning at Toysrus, then the park/lunch, FAO and the Disney store. I'm shopped out ;)

I'll start the report tonight when we get home from dinner. We are going to JT's place, Southern Hospitality, at request from the Mother in Law.

I'll post photos tonight.

it was pretty sticky yesterday, today some light rain and a little muggy, overall not bad.

We are looking forward to Tonys, just not enough time in this trip to venture far from the hotel. I think we walked about 10 miles yesterday and 10, so I'm ready for a nice long sit down meal.

Day 1:

So I had planned photos, but apparently I left my usb cable at home. I'll try to get one tomorrow and fill in the blanks with pictures.

Our trip began with a 6am rising. Things went super smooth and we were out the door, kids and all by 6:15. The drive to Detroit was uneventful and our plane left on time and arrived on time.

We had a limo setup for the drive to the hotel. It wasn't much more than a taxi and a fun way to start the trip.

In case I didn't already post it, the trip consist Myself, Wife, Kids (10, 8 and 4) and my Mother in Law

The limo was waiting and it was a quick 30 min ride to the hotel. The kids were great in the limo and the driver even complimented me when we arrived.

We are staying at the Doubletree on Times Square, right in the middle of the action! The hotel is great, we have two rooms, both 1 bedroom suites. One of our rooms was not ready, but we were able to get into our first room at 12:30 and settle in for few.

August%202009%20011_640.jpg

We asked the bellhop for a lunch recommendation and he sent us to 8th ave and 48th to Johns Pizzeria.

The food was excellent. Some of the best pizza ever, fresh, hot and perfect. We had lots of sides to go with it. I usually prefer Chicago style, but this pizza jumped right up my list to break the top 3 of the best I've eaten.

After lunch we went back to gather up for a big night. We booked a "Night at the Museum" for my boys (10 and 8) and myself. The Museum of Natural History has a program for guest to spend the night at the Museum.

Around 4pm we gathered our pillows and blankets and walked down the street to the nearest subway station.

August%202009%20065_640.jpg

I really enjoy walking the streets and riding subways (where available) when I'm in a new city. We had no problems navigating the subway and arrived at the Museum around 4:30. We wanted to check out the Museum a bit before checking in for the over night. Since they closed at 5:45, we got in free and left our bags while we walked around. First, this museum doesn't "flow" very well. Many dead ends, double backing and confusing paths. However, this did not alter how great we thought it was. The hour we spent walking round got us familiar with some of the museum and was very valuable that night. We managed to see "Dum-Dum" just before closing time.

August%202009%20089_640.jpg

We went back to check in for the night. The staff here were top notch. Everyone was happy to help and always pointed us in the right direction. We checked in easily, got buttons to identify us and waited for them to clear the museum. As soon as they gave the all clear we headed to our "spot" for the night.

August%202009%20096_640.jpg

They had setup a large number of cots, yes COTS!, in the Hall of Oceanic Life. We grabbed a cot in a far corner so we didn't have too much company. I estimated about 100 or so cots setup in this area. There is a large Blue Whale hanging in the hall surrounded by dozens of exhibits.

August%202009%20097_640.jpg

Within 30-45 mins the activities started. First we had a semi-guided tour of the mammals with free time to explore. We did A LOT of walking! Between going back to the cots and walking to the activities we got in a lot of exercise. We decided to grab a bit to eat, the food court was open with limited offerings. We had 3 sandwiches, 3 drinks, some fruit and pretzels...FIFTY BUCKS!! EEKK...Disney food sounded good about now!

After dinner we hit the frog exhibit.

August%202009%20101_640.jpg

I love frogs! They did a great job with this exhibit. The kids had a scavenger hunt to find out lots of frog info.

August%202009%20104_640.jpg
August%202009%20121_640.jpg

At the end they each received a cool key chain. The employee also gave the boys a frog wooden 3-d puzzle to share. We did some frog origami next and went out exploring again.

Our next activity was a big hit. Dinosaurs in the dark.

August%202009%20148_640.jpg

We grabbed our flashlights and an activity book full of questions to guide us through dark. My 8 yo was dying to see "Rexie" so we finally found him.

August%202009%20149_640.jpg

I don't think he was awake tonight though, he wasn't very active! We spent at least and hour or more with our flashlights wandering around the halls full of dinosaurs and mammals. It was a huge hit.

They had snacks setup, so we grabbed some snacks and bought some "special" t-shirts or the event.

A fun show called "Raptors: LIVE" which was a bird handler with 3 birds of prey. The kids sat in front and actually asked a few good questions. That is saying something for my kids. They usually ask, "whats his name? or can I take him home?"

August%202009%20141_640.jpg

I'll vent a bit here, this show was a "quiet" show. Lots of signs up and constant "hushing" form the handler. My kids were great, mostly because I would have carried them out by their toes otherwise, but people and their kids are a*holes. Of course 90 percent were great, but those 10 percent really make it difficult for everyone else. I find that to be so selfish and self centered. Kids were running around the museum and yelling, carrying on etc. I don't blame them, but their parents are just either stupid or could care less. The event was 120 per person, I would think the parents would want the kids to get something out of it and not just use it as a day care.
I digress.

IMax was next on the list, so we headed to the theater for a very good IMAX show about beavers. (insert bad pun here) The show was very good, my 8 yo really enjoyed it. It was getting late and I was whipped, but I managed to stay awake for the entire show. After the show we had about 45 mins till lights out. I brought some cards, so we decided to sit and play war instead of wandering around. We were all exhausted from walking so much that night.

August%202009%20168_640.jpg

Lights out at 11:45 and for the most part it was quiet. I brought ear plugs, and tylenol PM so I was out quickly. Sleeping on a cot isn't very fun. I was awake a lot and 7am arrived rapidly. We grabbed a quick bit to eat, free muffins and juice, and headed to the subway back to the room.

August%202009%20170_640.jpg

I know I hopped into day 2, but day 2 didn't really start until I showered and hit the town. We all met up for a breakfast at Brooklyn Diner around the corner. Expensive breakfast, but fresh and unique offerings. After breakfast we all came back to clean up....

up next, day 2.

Thanks for the report Don! The Night at the Museum sounds really fun! We have to opportunity to spend the night at the Monterey Bay Aquarium since we are members and have never done it. Makes me think we should.

Sounds like a great trip so far!!!

We stayed at DoubleTree last year and really enjoyed it.. a bit pricey, but worth it since its right there in the middle of everything..

Have you gone to that place across the street for some pizza yet? Its pretty good.. there is also a convenience store right there that has subs to die for!! if you walk out of the hotel and cross the street to that pizza place across the street-- instead of walking into the pizza place take a right and walk down that sidewalk.. there is a pub right there and just a few places down is that convenience store that sells the subs..

Cant wait to hear more..

Thanks Don: The "Night at the Museum" sounds like a lot of fun. Makes me want to do it with my girls. Makes me want to see the movie again too... ;)

I'm loving your report so far! The overnight at the museum sounds like so much fun! (And yeah, the food is waaaaaay overpriced.)

And the bellboy at the hotel definitely recommended a good place! We love Johns, and eat there frequently when we're in the city. It's so good, and for a restaurant in a prime location, the prices aren't bad. :thumbsup2

Have a wonderful time!!!

I'm going back now to read the rest of your TR. :goodvibes

Day 2:

Ok, so you know about breakfast at the Brooklyn Diner.

Went back to clean up and head out for the day.

Today is a day of power shopping. All the cool stuff to do in New York, the kids choose toys stores. First stop, the GIANT toysrus in Times Square. This store is huge and they have every toy on the planet, or so it seems.

August%202009%20172_640.jpg

We took a walk around and decided to take a ride on the ferris wheel first. They have a large ferris wheel in the middle of the store. The kids enjoyed it, but it went out a little long. How many times do you need to go around on an indoor ferris wheel?

August%202009%20201_640.jpg
August%202009%20207_640.jpg

We spent at least an hour or more walking around this place. The kids all picked out some toys. Our 8 yo built a cool robot at the Robot Galaxy. Sort of a Robot version of Build a Bear. You pick out parts and build a custom robot. Then at home you can hook it into the computer and play online.

We decided to walk to central park from here. The kids were tired from walking yesterday, so we sent the two boys ahead to central park in a cab and pushed the youngest in the stroller and walked to the park. On the way we hit 6th ave and a huge street "fair". It was cool walking down the street checking out the stands and smelling all the street food. Since we were not all together we didn't eat, but I was wishing for lunch right about now!

August%202009%20212_640.jpg

After about a mile or so walk we met up with the rest of the family. We took a brief walk around central park and stopped at a hot dog stand. I was determined to eat a cart some time along the trip, so we did for lunch today. I was hoping they had knish, but no luck. I was told on tripadvisor that I had to have a knish. I'll keep looking.

We found a playground on the southern end of central park and ate while the kids played. We hung out there for about an hour until it started to rain.

August%202009%20221_640.jpg

We took shelter then headed out to grab a carriage ride. The rain let up and we enjoyed a 20 min carriage ride around the southern end of the park.

August%202009%20226_640.jpg
August%202009%20227_640.jpg

Next stop, another toys store. This time FAO Schwartz. Not nearly the size of ToyRus, but a great toy store anyway. It was a short walk and we were there. I really enjoy walking the city...did I already mention that earlier?

The kids got a photo with the "guards" and we headed in to check out the store.

August%202009%20234_640.jpg

Lots of unique toys in FAO. Our youngest and I went to check out the girlie stuff while the boys went with mom and grammy. We hit the giant Piano and she played on it for a bit.

August%202009%20246_640.jpg
August%202009%20248_640.jpg

Some Barbie time and other toys and we all met up again. Middle child hit the piano and some monster toys and went off to find some star wars toys. The kids all pick out more toys and we started on the trip back to the hotel. (The kids get a budget to spend on vacation, so they put a big dent in that budget today) We walked up 5th Ave on the walk back and guess what we ran into? The Disney Store! YEA!

August%202009%20262_640.jpg

I didn't realize this was such a big Disney Store. We visit the one in Chicago often, this one is double or triple the size. Of course the kids, well 2 of the 3, picked out something. I drooled over some awesome art upstairs and headed out. It was a bit of a hike back, but we went up 6th ave again and checked out some of the street goodies.

Took a break in the hotel and opened up lots of the new toys for the kiddos to play with while we relaxed a bit.

My Mother in Law requested to check out Justin Timberlakes restaurant which was a few miles away. It was called Southern Hospitality. We hopped our first cab ride (for some of us) and were off to dinner. Since there are six of us, we had to get two cabs. My wife, MIL and 8yo took once and Myself, 10 and 4 yo were in the other. Our cab driver was very nice and got us there in short order. Even though we got the second cab, we beat the other cab to the destination. They were right behind us however, so we didn't wait long. My 8 yo told the cabbie he was hoping to be in the cash cab. So the driver asked him questions for the whole ride and gave him a dollar as a prize. I thought was pretty awesome. Hopefully my wife tipped him well.

The restaurant was more of a bar. I'm glad we went early, I can imagine it would get pretty rowdy in here later at night. There were only about a dozen tables and the bar was larger than the table area. The food was very good, we had a large appetizer which included fried ribs among other items. I ordered the ribs (half wet/half dry) and they were excellent. The cornbread was also very good. Service was spotty, but we enjoyed our meal.

Since I was working on little sleep from the night before, we caught a cab and went back to the hotel. I walked down to try to find a usb cable. It was easy to locate an electronics store since they are located every 100 feet or so. Since I was there, I picked up a I  NY tshirt for everyone. How can you pass up 4 tshirts for 10 bucks.

Bad news here, was the cable wasn't the right one. Since I already tossed the box I just ate it. This means no photos on my TR, but I'll add them when I get home. I have lots of photos on my facebook, but just ones from my camera phone.

Ohhh...while I was out I found a knish. That was the good part. The bad part was it was awful. Do New Yorkers really eat these? ICK!

We just wrapped up a fun Day 3 and I'll report back tomorrow!

Good Dinner with some DIS'ers was a highlight...and show!

Day 3:

I have a few mins of down time so I'll get started on Day 3.

We all slept in, until around 8 or so and took a walk down to grab breakfast. We decided to grab breakfast at Planet Hollywood. We figured the kids would love it and breakfast would be the best meal to have since the food for lunch and dinner is so awful.

The meal was sufficient for breakfast. The kids loved all the items on display. I posted a few on facebook that I thought the twi-geeks would enjoy.

I had some explaining to do when I snapped that twilight photo

August%202009%20274_640.jpg

Since the kids go in a lot of shopping already, we took a walk down to 5th ave for the ladies. First stop was H&M. The boys and I rode the escalator for an hour while the girls shopped.

August%202009%20276_640.jpg

We sat on the wall of shame with all the other men and played with toys/cellphones. After that stop was done we headed over to Rockefeller plaza. We decided to head to the "top of the rock". This was very impressive. The view up there is amazing, we took lots of great photos and spent 30 mins plus on the 3 observation levels.

We grabbed some pretzels and drinks and sat in the plaza for lunch.

Our next stop was around the corner to Nintendo World. This store wasn't very impressive, other than the 10 or so Wii's setup, it was just walls full of games and some t-shirts. The upside was a tournament with a Wii sports resort game prize. My boys both entered into the tourney. The middle child lost in the first round, but my oldest made his way to the semi finals. He lost, but said his controller wasn't working. I wouldn't be surprised if that were true, the ones setup in the store were very flaky also....

I'm off now to see Letterman, I'll post again tonight with a day 3 wrap up.

Your report is making me want to head back down to the city soon!

I agree that the Nintendo World story is not very impressive. But I have a story about that store. Me, my DH and a bunch of our friends went down to the city in early December for my DH's birthday a few years ago. Since we're gamers, we went into the store. When we were ready to leave, we were tired after walking all day so we decided to take the elevator down that one floor. Well, the elevator got us to the bottom, but the doors didn't open. We pressed the button for the doors to open, and nothing. There were like 10 of us in this elevator. And I quickly started to panic. Now since this is a glass elevator, I started to bang on the glass, trying to get someone to help us. Plenty of people looked, but no one helped. There was even a security guard staring right at us. After about a minute my BIL and one of our friends pried the elevator doors open with their bare hands. Long story short, I'll never get into that horror elevator again.

Don't bother George, turns on they were filming Fridays show. So watch Friday. I did see parts of Mondays show, they were doing some stuff out on the street.

Sitting in the airport now, waiting to go home :(

So day 3 wrap up

After we were done at Nintendo we went back to clean up. Next stop was Shrek the Musical and dinner with Andrea (kimisabella) and family.

We arrived to see shrek around 2:15 and waiting inline to get into the theater. We had great seats right in the center of the theater and 14 rows back. The show was excellent! Hard to compare it to something like the Lion King, but it was just as entertaining or more. It was classic Shrek style, bathroom humor for the kids and some great jokes that went over the kids head. The storyline is from the first movie, but it was different enough so it wasn't boring. I think everyone in our party from 4 to 60 enjoyed the show. We get any photos of Shrek, since it wasn't allowed.

The show was about 2 and 1/2 hours long. After the show we walked a dozen or so blocks to meet up with Andrea, Vinny, Kim and Isabella. We (Andrea) setup dinner for 10 at Tony DiNapolis just off 7th ave. Dinner was great! It was italian family style. Each entree we ordered served 2-3. Of course we ordered way to much food, but everything was excellent. The company was as good as the food. Shout out to Andrea and family for making the drive into the city to eat with us. THANKS!!
